Stony Brook: Stony Brook defeated UMASS-Lowell, 6-5. The Sea Wolves pounded out 11 hits on the afternoon and went up 5-2 going into the eighth inning until a three-run bases-clearing triple from UMASS leftfielder Cam Climo. Starter Sean Mooney went 6.2 innings, giving up just three earned runs and six hits. The loss puts St. John’s at 13-8 on the season. Division-II: Adelphi: Adelphi was defeated by Le Moyne 6-4. Le Moyne starter Josiah Gray went 7 strong innings to improve to 6-0 on the season. LIU Post: The Pioneers dropped their game to Bridgeport 7-2. A quiet day for the bats of LIU Post, as the sole two runs came late in the ninth inning, when the game was out of reach. Rob Andreoli continued his torrid season for the Pioneers, knocking two hits and an RBI on the afternoon. LHP Noah Lorenzo had his most disappointing outing of the season, giving up six runs, 11 hits across 7.1 innings. The Pioneers drop to 13-10 on the season. Molloy: Molloy defeated Queens, 8-4. Division-III: Farmingdale: Farmingdale State climbed back in game one of the double header, winning 9-8 against St. Josephs (Brooklyn). The Rams added four runs in the fourth to chip away at the seven run deficit from the first inning. The big story is the junior LHP Wirchansky, who fired another eight shutout innings to lower his ERA to 0.64 over 42.0 IP and has walked only one batter all season–tops in the nation.

Offensively, Michael Salmonese led the way with a 4-for-5 afternoon but five players had multiple hits. They improve to 9-6 on the season, and will be back in action today with a DH against So. Co.

Queens: Queens lost to Molloy 8-4. The Knights jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first behind RBIs from Anthony Scotti, Louis Antos and Mathew Stepnoski. The Lions fought back, scoring one in the bottom of the frame and 5 in the third inning to take a 6-3 lead. Eric Roubel tacked on a late inning homerun but i.t would not be enough, as the Knights could not overcome the deficit.

Division-III:

Farmingdale: Farmingdale State climbed back in game one of the double header, winning 9-8 against St. Josephs (Brooklyn). The Rams added four runs in the fourth to chip away at the seven run deficit from the first inning. Shawn Blasberg and Jake Jacobs both had impressive days, with Blasberg notching three hits and Jacobs driving in three RBIs. In the ninth, catcher Kenneth Johntry drove in the game winning RBI sac fly to seal the game one victory.

Farmingdale dropped the second game of the double header 2-1 to St. Josephs (Brooklyn). After trailing 1-0 in the fifth, third baseman Jake Jacobs lined an RBI single to tie the game up. In the bottom of the frame, St. Joseph’s third baseman Anthony Palermo knocked his second RBI single of the day, putting the Bears up 2-1 for the rest of the game. Palermo went 3-for-3 on the day with the teams only RBI.

Catcher Jeffrey Towle had three hits, three runs, and four RBIs. Ryan Steffens went five innings in the start, giving up just three hits.

by Vinny Messana When two great pitchers are on the top of their game, it usually takes some late-game heroics to win it. That’s exactly what happened. George Rainer hit a sac-fly in the ninth inning to give Mount Sinai a 2-1 win over Sal Zafonte and Sayville. James Sarno made a tremendous play in the center field to end a threat in the ninth inning and eighth grader Paul Gomes threw out the potential game-winning run at the plate in the bottom of the eighth inning. Mount Sinai’s ace, Sam Kessler, fired the full nine-innings and continued his masterful season with 12 strikeouts and one unearned run. He now has six wins, and has allowed only four ER over 51.1 IP with 78 Ks and only 23 hits and nine walks. He is committed to West Virginia in the fall but there has been recent chatter that his performance could warrant a selection in the MLB Draft next month. “Going against an arm like that (Zafonte) is always great,” said Kessler. “It makes you want to exceed what you are capable of. He pitched a great game and hats off to him,” he added. Despite the terrific outing, Kessler felt he wasn’t at his sharpest. “I think today I didn’t have what was my best location–could’ve been better and I walked more guys than usual. Besides that I felt great and thought I pitched well enough to win,” he said. He went on to rave about the defense behind him. “That play by Sarno was one of the best I’ve seen. He’s a senior also and he gives it his all everyday of the week. I thought the ball was out when their guy hit it, but luckily we have one of the best outfielders on Long Island and he made the plat that saved the game. Also can’t forget the throw our eighth grader made to prevent them from walking off.” Another big moment in the game was the game-tying home run in the fifth inning by Jake Golino. With the victory, Mount Sinai improves to 14-7 on the season and will face No. 2 seed Comsewogue tomorrow at 4pm with Brandon Bonnano on the hill. “If Brandon can pitch to what he’s capable of we can get the ‘W’.”

LIU Post was the first Long Island team to kick off the 2016 season. It began in disappointing fashion, as they dropped both games of a double header to Limestone College in Gaffney, SC. In Game 1, Big Game Jake DeCarli got the call. He cruised through the first two frames–as he often does. The Pioneers got him a run to work with in their half of the second on a bases loaded walk by Matt Bowers. Unfortunately, it was not DeCarli’s best day. He allowed runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings, before being lifted in favor of Dillon Burke. The Pioneers did not mount any more offense after the second inning, and only compiled five hits in the seven inning game–one by five separate players. They fell 4-1 in a brisk 1:44 game. The ball went to co-ace Dan Jagiello is Game 2. He had a run to work with immediately, as Rob Andreoli drove in James Cohan with an RBI single. Jagiello gave it back in Limestone’s half of the inning on an RBI double. The score stayed tied into the third inning when Limestone took the 2-1 lead on an error. Andreoli’s bat tied the game in the fifth in the fifth inning on a double scoring Joe Spitaleri. The lead did not last long, however. Another run scoring error following by a two-run HR put Limestone in the lead for good. Jagiello finished with 4.0 IP, 1 hit, 1 er and struck out five. J.P. Lipovac was charged with the loss. The Pioneers out-hit their opponents 5-3, but fell to 0-2 on the young season. The two teams will be back at it tomorrow for another double dip beginning at noon.

In front of a raucous home crowd and many of his friends and family, Steven Matz had the opportunity to pitch his New York Mets to the NLCS for the first time since 2006. Unfortunately, the man opposing him was the reigning NL MVP and three-time Cy Young winner Clayton Kershaw. The Mets were defeated 3-1, with Matz suffering his first big league loss–although it will not count towards the official stats due to it being the postseason. Matz hadn’t pitched in a game since September 23 against the Cincinnati Reds but he was sharp early. He struck out leadoff batter Enrique Hernandez on a nasty 81 MPH curveball. He induced a weak fly ball off the bat of Howie Kendrick before coaxing a weak grounder from Adrian Gonzalez. His fastball was touching 96 MPH with movement and his change up had some nice downward action. [mlbvideo id=”522192583″ width=”400″ height=”224″ /] He had a smooth second inning as well, working around a walk to Corey Seager, and retired the side on weak pop outs by Yasiel Puig and A.J. Ellis. He did run into trouble in the third, however. After striking out Justin Ruggiano, he allowed a single to Kershaw on a hanging curveball. Two pitches earlier, he had him looking foolish on the pitch but this time he left it up and the lefty-swinging Kershaw was prepared. The next batter, Hernandez grounded an 85 MPH change up to Murphy who made the smart play to get the lead runner. With two outs, Matz got ahead of Kendrick 0-2 but after missing with a fastball he allowed a single up the middle which allowed the runner to get to third base. That brought the dangerous Gonzalez up to the plate. He took a fastball for ball one. On the next pitch, Matz tried to hook a curveball in the zone. Gonzalez was badly jammed but he was just strong enough to get it over the infielder’s heads for an RBI single to get the Dodgers on the board. The next batter, the former Met Justin Turner, continued his assault on Mets’ pitching and hooked a 1-0 curve down the left field line. Cespedes had trouble handling it off the wall–although both runs probably would’ve scored anyway. It opened the game up to 3-0. Against Kershaw, it appeared over. This is not Brett Anderson on the hill. The Ward Melville grad did settle in the next two innings. He worked around an A.J. Ellis single in the fourth inning and got a strikeout of Ruggiano–who just missed a home run on the previous pitch but it went foul. The Mets scored their lone run in the fourth inning on a long home run from Daniel Murphy, who became the second player to hit two home runs in one season off Kershaw. In the fifth inning, Matz allowed a leadoff single to Hernandez on a 3-1 sinker. After a coaching visit to the mound, he settled down and retired Kendrick and Gonzalez before striking out Seager to end the frame. That was it for Matz after five innings and 85 pitches. He threw 50 for strikes. He probably would’ve pitched the sixth but manager Terry Collins opted to pinch-hit Michael Cuddyer for him, who proceeded to strike out. It was clear the 24-year-old Matz was fired up for this game. He showed a ton of fire when he allowed the big-hit to Turner. The even-keeled Matz knew very well that he had virtually zero wiggle room against Kershaw. He did strike out four batters, but he allowed eight base runners in five innings, so it was not his best performance. The series is now tied at 2-2 and Game 5 will be played in Los Angeles on Thursday at 8 PM. If the Mets win, they will advance to play the Chicago Cubs in the NLCS. Matz did not face them during the regular season. He would get the Game 4 start in that series as well.
