Six strikeouts for Franklin Parra through two innings pic.twitter.com/9zwKhzkYW1 — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) April 5, 2018 (Editor’s Note: This article originally appeared on April 6, 2018) If today was meant to be a showcase of Franklin Parra, Centereach clearly did not get the memo. They defeated Copiague‘s highly-touted LHP by the score of 10-0, behind Eddie Bassett‘s arm and Ryan Mahnke and Brian Honka’s bats. Parra, who is committed to San Jacinto Community College, was far from disappointing. He struck out eight batters over three innings and touched 92 MPH with his heater in the first inning. He was overpowering, but Centereach did work his pitch count up early. He walked one in the first, and another in the second. The Centereach Cougars got on the board in the thi...
The New York Mets continued the trend of taking advantage of the pipeline of left-handed pitching prospects from Long Island. They selected Franklin Parra (Copiague HS) in the 11th round, joining Anthony Kay and Steven Matz as local southpaws selected by the organization in the past decade. Parra’s path to this point has been very unique. He was a relative unknown until last July, when his fastball velocity spiked to the low 90s, he dominated in front of scouts in East Cobb, GA and averaged 2.5 strikeouts per inning during the summer. He then continued that success through the fall where I began to follow his progress and realized this was not a typical situation. An elite left-handed pitcher that was less than a year from graduating high school yet he remained uncommitted to a colle...
With MLB Draft day just one day away it’s time to discuss which local high school players have a shot to play at the professional level. Many of these players I have watched for the past few seasons and have watched them evolve from talented players with lots of untapped potential to elite players. Additionally, each of these young men happen to possess rare leadership qualities that will help them excel at the next level. Several of these players will play high-end Division-I baseball and a few of them will play professionally after that. Criteria: high school graduates of 2018-2020 and I needed to see them play at least once. Frankin Parra (Copiague 2018, San Jacinto CC-commit) When you watch the video above, it’s easy to see why cross checkers were flying into Long Island to...

The Paul Gibson Award is given to the top pitcher in Suffolk County every year. Due to the volume of talented pitchers on Long Island every year, the winners have typically gone on to have very successful college–and in some cases, big league–careers as well. Last years winner was Patch Dooley of Hills East. Here’s the winners since 2005: 2016: Sam Kessler, Mount Sinai 2015: Joe Flynn, Ward Melville 2014: Jack Piekos, Bayport-Blue Point 2013: Jack Piekos, Bayport-Blue Point 2012: Anthony Kay, Ward Melville 2011: Remy Jenco, Hills West 2010: Ed Macaluso, Islip 2009: Marcus Stroman, Pat-Med 2008: Ryan Pfaeffle, Commack 2007: John Mincone, Hills East 2006: Mike Belfiore, Commack 2005: Glenn Gibson, Center Moriches Of that bunch, there are five players that have gone on to pl...
As the season wore on, it seemed I was hearing about more and more players that had risen their stock and impressed scouts in various tournaments in places such as East Cobb, Diamond Nation or Baseball Heaven. In addition to the amount of Div-I commits there were, a handful of other players rose to the next level; where they might hear their name called on draft day in June 2018. Only Ben Brown and Brian Morrell wound up getting drafted from the 2017 class–a slight disappointment considering how many players seemed to have the chance at it. In 2018, though, I expect as many as five Long Island seniors to get drafted out of high school. Here’s a rundown of the players that have already garnered interest from the local MLB scouts… Franklin Parra (Copiague LHP) The Dominican...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WbifqwX4G7M&t=1s In a battle filled with current and future Div-I prospects, it was a third inning rally that enabled the Body Armor Titans to come out victorious in a friendly rivalry. In what was dubbed “McGregor vs Mayweather“, Titans-Parso took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the second on a two-run double by Nick Ungar (Connetquot ’18) on a well-struck ball off James Cardinale (Commack ’18) into left center field to score Will Feil (Wheatley ’18) and Chris Peralta (Valley Stream South ’18). That was all the offense they would muster up on this day against a loaded pitching staff. Kyle Johnson (Newfield ’18) came on in relief in the third inning and worked around a walk and a single to Mike Handal (Garden Cit...
