(Photo Credit: USC-Upstate Baseball) While it was certainly not the best showing for Division-I baseball teams from our region, there’s two silver linings Sunday was much better than Friday or Saturday. Northeast teams are always behind their southeast and southwest counterparts in February. There’s simply no substitute for going outside and getting live at bats all winter. Granted, the weather this February was better than any since 2012 but it still is different than being outside everyday in Florida. In any event, here’s how the local Division-I teams stack up after one week. We are going to start Division-II next week and Division-III the following week. Please note that this ranking is based on how the teams played this past weekend not based on track records of past...
by Joseph Langan As opening weekend continues for the five local teams, only two have found themselves getting their first win of the season. While Stony Brook and Hofstra was able to get in the win column, three others enter Sunday looking to salvage a victory before they head back north. Here’s how it went down: (Make sure to check out Orlin & Cohen by clicking here) Division-I: Hofstra and Purdue battled for the lead early in game one of today’s double header. Trailing 5-4 going into the top of the 6th, Hofstra’s offense exploded, scoring 7 runs in the top of the frame giving them the 11-5 lead. The Pride would only expand upon that lead and go on to win by a score of 13-6. Hofstra’s top of the lineup would provide a huge amount of the offensive production, accounting for 7 RB...
Well, there’s always today’s games. Despite the excitement of college baseball’s Opening Day, it was a less-than-stellar performance from the local teams. All five teams in action suffered setbacks. The good news is that today is another day for the team’s to bounce back. Here’s a quick rundown of how it went down. Check out Orlin & Cohen by clicking here. Division-I: Hofstra entered the bottom of the eighth inning with a 6-4 lead over Purdue. The flood gates, unfortunately, would open in that inning for the Boilermakers, who put up a five-spot. The big knock came by Kyle LaPlante – who crushed a bases-clearing double to give them a 9-6 lead, which wound up being the final. The closer for Purdue is named Bo Hofstra – coincidentally enough, and ...
Although it may be hard to believe, we made it through another off-season. At least for Division-I college baseball fans. That’s right, across the country over 100 teams will kick off their season tonight. The northeast schools get to escape to the warm climate of the south to get their games in under the lights. In terms of the local programs, there will be plenty of action. Stony Brook, Hofstra, St. John’s, Fordham and LIU – who will play their first game since the merger of the two schools. Here’s a quick rundown: Stony Brook is down in San Marcos, TX where they will kick off a four-game set against Texas State. The Seawolves are the reigning America East Champs. Last time they played was in the Baton Rouge Regional in which they had the misfortune of having to f...
Fear never crossed Chris’ mind. Not in the minor leagues, not at the Division-I level, not in the Long Island Championship. Not even when he was 7-years-old playing on a 9-year-old travel team playing 3rd base just 45 feet away from the batters. It’s not clear how Chris developed his fearlessness but he did admire and adopt the grittiness of the late 90s Yankees; although his favorite player may come as a surprise. “My favorite player growing up was Chad Curtis,” he said citing the 10-year veteran that batted .264 in his career. Just about every Yankee fan from that era cites Derek Jeter as their favorite player, but Pike preferred the player that had to fight tooth-and-nail for his chance. It was a sign of things to come. The early days Chris immediately jumped int...
Fordham onto the Atlantic 10 Finals tomorrow at 12:00 with a 4-2 over University of Dayton. pic.twitter.com/99NX0k0Bhd — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 24, 2019 Yesterday was a thrilling day for two local Division-I Colleges. Stony Brook and Fordham both won close games to advance to their respective Conference Championships on Saturday. The Sea Wolves held off a late Binghamton rally to hold on, 5-4, and they will face No. 3 Binghamton today at noon in the America East Championship. Fordham defeated Dayton, 4-2, to advance to the Atlantic-10 Championship. Let’s start with Stony Brook’s game. The Seawolves got off to a quick 1-0 lead in the second inning on a wild pitch that scored Brandon Alamo. The Bearcats used a two-run home run in the sixth inning to regain the l...
A terrific day of baseball yesterday featuring walk-off home runs, a no-hitter and a dramatic late-inning grand slam. To read the recap of our coverage of SUNY Maritime, click here. Let’s just right into the rest of the action. Division-I: As always, let’s start with Division-I. After falling yesterday, Stony Brook came out on top Saturday against Southeastern Louisiana, escaping with a 7-4 victory. Heading into the 5th inning, Stony Brook was trailing 3-1. Fast forward to the 6th inning and they held a 6-3 lead, thanks to a five-spot in the 5th. The five-run inning featured another Michael Wilson home run, as he delivered with a grand slam to put the Seawolves in a comfortable position to win the game. From this point forward, Stony Brook only allowed one more run over five in...
In total, seven different colleges on the island played down south on Friday, with St. John’s getting postponed. It comes as little surprise that we continued to see Long Island teams struggle against schools who have been practicing outside all year long. There was, however, two bright spots that came in the form of double sweeps for the Long Islanders. With that being said, here’s a look at Friday’s results. Division-I: Coming off a strong series win a week ago, Stony Brook struggled on Friday as they fell to Southeastern Lousiana, 7-2. Although Stony Brook collected 10 hits, they couldn’t get things going with runners in scoring position. Chris Hamilton launched a solo home run in the top half of the 2nd to give Stony Brook an early 1-0 lead, but that was the onl...
by Brianna Pace Coming off a .500 season, Coach Kevin Leighton and the Fordham Rams are focused on having a big season. Returning seniors are trying for a fourth consecutive playoff berth and they have a lot of pieces in place to make it happen. Despite the loss of Greg Weissert–who was drafted by the New York Yankees–the pitching staff has a high-ceiling. Lined up to start this weekend the coach has Mike Cowell, David Wright, and Jimmy Murphy. Cowell and Wright are both coming off of injuries but Murphy was the team captain last year and finished with a 4.50 ERA. With a solid mix of young players and veterans ready to take the mound it is safe to say the loss of Weissert won’t be a huge hit to the team’s pitching. Mark Donadio, a senior outfielder, is expected to have a big ye...
