Division-I: MARTY’S FOURTH HIT OF THE DAY IS A WALK-OFF! #SJUBase pic.twitter.com/9vsUqqvz28 — St. John’s Baseball (@StJohnsBaseball) April 23, 2021 St. John’s won a walk-off double by Marty Higgins in the 11th inning to defeat Seton Hall, 5-4. It capped a 4-for-4 game for Higgins. Nick Mondak started and was brilliant for the Johnnies, striking out 9 over seven strong innings, yielding just one run. Joe Joe Rodriguez went four innings in relief with four strikeouts to earn the win. They will be back in action today for a DH today at noon. St, John’s is 12-10 overall but 3-5 in conference play. Fordham lost 13-3 to Saint Joseph’s to fall to 16-11 on the season. They actually led 2-1 in the third after a 2-run single by Zach Selinger but that did not last long....
Division-I Fordham swept St. Bonaventure by the scores of 3-0 and 7-5. In Game 1, MLB Draft prospect Matt Mikulski was dominant once again. He struck out 16 in a one-hit shutout, walking just two batters. The game was scoreless into the sixth inning when Zach Selinger got the Rams on the board with an RBI single that scored Jason Coules. They added an insurance run on a two-run single by Nick Labella. Game 2 featured way more action. The Bonnies got on the board in the first, scoring two runs on RBI singles by Matt Williams and Garrett Boldt. The Rams answered right back in the home half on a two-run single by Casey Brown. In the second inning, Trey Maeker gave the Rams a 3-2 lead with a solo shot to center and they added a run on an RBI single by Zach Selinger. In the third, Jason Coules ...
Division-I Stony Brook ran their win streak to 10 games – all in conference play – so they are 10-0 in America East conference games – and 14-7 overall after sweeping UMASS-Lowell in a double header yesterday. In Game 1, UMASS took an early 2-0 lead against Sam Turcotte on a sac fly by Vinnie Martin and a an RBI single by Gerry Siracusa. As is usually the case, Turcotte buckled down and was lights-out the rest of the way while the Seawolves chipped away. Brett Paulsen’s sac fly got them on the board in the second inning and Shane Paradine‘s solo shot tied it up in the fourth inning. In the top of the seventh, Derek Yalon gave them the lead with a two-run double to score Paulsen and John LaRocca. Evan Giordano followed with a two-run HR to extend the lead to 6-...
There was not a cloud in the sky for much of Saturday afternoon. I spent the day at LIU, but there was quality baseball all over Long Island. Here’s how it went down: Division-I: Stony Brook continued their incredible run as they swept a DH from Hartford to run their streak to eight games. In Game 1, they fell behind early, 2-0, on a two-run HR by Tremayne Cobb Jr against Brian Herrmann. The lead did not last long, though. Chris Hamilton crushed a game-tying two-run HR to right field in the third inning. Brett Paulsen gave the Seawolves a 3-2 lead in the fourth inning and they never looked back. They added insurance runs in the sixth on an RBI double by Cole Durkan and a sac fly by Johnny Decker. Herrmann wound up going the complete 7 innings, allowing just the two earned runs with e...
Well, we waited long enough to kick off the Power Rankings season. But, there really was no choice since LIU didn’t open up until this past week. Now that everyone is in action, it’s only right for the first edition. We will just stick to Division-I schools, since Queens hasn’t started so I can’t really analyze them yet and none of the Division-III schools have begun. Without further ado, here’s how the local schools stack up. 1.Fordham (Record: 7-1, Trending UP) The Rams won two of three from Farleigh-Dickinson this weekend, and the loss was a 16-inning marathon that happened to be the second longest game in school history! On Friday, they combined to throw a 1-hit shutout in a 9-0 win with Matt Mikulski showing why he’s one of the top southpaws around....
Well, it’s not quite Yankees vs Red Sox, but two teams that do not like to lose to each other are Fordham and Stony Brook. Two of the top Division-I programs in the northeast battled it out yesterday for the first time since March 13, 2016. For much of the rivalry, Stony Brook has dominated – the Seawolves have an all-time record of 17-5 against NCAA’s winningest program. For much of yesterday, it appeared that the Seawolves would do more of the same. They had a 7-2 lead in the top of the seventh, well on their way to a victory. But the Rams would chip away at the lead with two runs in the seventh and eighth innings before breaking through with three runs in the ninth – with the go-ahead run coming on an RBI single by Jack Harnisch that was his third of the day. Jos...
This week will start to actually feel like baseball season for two reasons It’s slated to be above 50 degrees from Tuesday through Friday. Seven local teams will be in action Before this week, it’s only been a handful of teams to even get on the field let alone have more than one game at a time. So this will be fun. We used to do the “What’s On Tap” every Monday back in 2015-’16, but it just got too tedious when there’s 15 teams playing multiple times per week. Also, I replaced it with the Weekly Power Rankings, which I haven’t started up yet. Here’s the local teams that will be action this week. Tuesday: Fordham @ Stony Brook 2pm Felician @ Molloy 3:30pm Wednesday: Sacred Heart @ Fordham 3pm LIU @ Farleigh-Dickinson 1pm Thursday: Felic...
Saturday was a brutally cold day, but there was no stopping baseball from being played in our northeast region. A few local teams were in action, and it was an overall successful day once again. Here’s how it went down… Fordham opened up their 2021 season with a victory over NJIT. I was planning to attend but the trip was littered with traffic and was going to take over 2 hours so I would’ve arrived late. Combine that with the brutal temperature, and I’m not complaining about not going. Matt Mikulski started for the Rams, went four innings, struck out eight and was awarded the victory. He allowed two ER on four hits. Alex Henderson pitched 1.2 innings in relief, allowing one ER. Jack Popolizio earned the hard, 10-out save, striking out three batters along the way. T...
It took until a week before Opening Day, but Fordham has released their 2021 schedule. The Rams will open up on Saturday, February 20 at Villanova at 12:30. They will host Sacred Heart three days later, Tuesday February 23 in their home opener at 3 pm. The schedule will look markedly different from 2020, when they opened up against Florida International and also made road trips to Phoenix, AZ and Greenville. SC before opening up conference play. The Atlantic-10 will play four-game series against conference teams but only ones that are geographically close to reduce travel. Additionally, they will face some local Division-I programs such as NJIT, Stony Brook, Sacred Heart, Farleigh Dickinson, St. John’s, Seton Hall, Wagner and Hofstra before the Atlantic-10 schedule opens up on Friday...
(Photo Credit: Rob Edwards/KLC Fotos) There’s a couple ways to look at this past weekend for the locals but I’m a glass-half-full person so let’s keep it positive. Let’s get to it: Division-I: 1.St. John’s (Record: 3-3. Trending UP) 2. Stony Brook (Record: 1-6, Trending Neutral) 3. Hofstra (Record: 1-6, Trending Down) 4. Fordham (Record: 1-6, Trending Down) 5. LIU (Record: 1-3, Trending Neutral) Breaking it down: St. John’s won two of three from Cal, no small task for a northeast team to travel cross-country and win a series on the West Coast in February. That was definitely the most positive storyline from this past weekend for the Division-I schools. Also, Stony Brook traveled to ACC Country and lost three games by a total of five runs. While there are...
(By Joseph Langan and Vin Messana) As we enter the second weekend of college baseball for Division-I schools, some of Long Island’s Division-II & III teams kicked off their season today. Six games were scheduled on Friday as Stony Brook, Fordham and Old Westbury, all suffered tough losses on the day while St. John’s, Molloy and NY Tech came out on top. Here’s how it went down: (Make sure to check out Orlin & Cohen by clicking here). Division I: Stony Brook, taking on a tough opponent in Clemson, gave up an early two-spot that they would never fight back from. Clemson pitcher Sam Weatherly tossed an incredible six innings, only allowing two hits and collecting his first win of the season. Seawolves starting pitcher, Jared Milch, pitched well, pumping out a solid six inni...
