by Andy Smith It’s the start of a new season ! And with the mild winter, it seems like it flew right by onto baseball season. The Division-Is opened up last night and Molloy will open up today. Without further ado, here’s how it went down… Division-I: St. John’s was the lone local team to get a W as they came out of the gate hot with an impressive 7-6 win in extra innings at Old Dominion. Paul Orbon‘s game-winning RBI single was the difference, as the Johnnies were able to erase a 4-run deficit. David Glancy picked up right where he left off last year, crushing a HR. Chuck Sanzio pitched two innings and earned the winning relief. Sony Fauci started and went four innings, allowing 4 runs (2 ER) and did not factor in the decision. He walked five and struck out 2...
by Michael Anderson After a long offseason, the 2022 NCAA Baseball season is officially underway, as Friday afternoon brought the first round of action for college baseball this year. However, it was a particularly quiet day for some of the New York schools. St. John’s, Stony Brook, Albany, LIU, Fordham, and Old Westbury all opened up the season with a road game somewhere down south, but only one team came out victorious. Division-I: Middle Tennessee played the role of the away team against St. John’s down in Wilmington, North Carolina, and was able to win an intense game that went into extra innings, 3-2. St. John’s struck early with a pair in the first, as catcher Tate Ballestero singled home the game’s first run. First baseman Nick Cirelli grounded out productively to first base, ...
Editor’s Note: This article originally appeared on January 10, 2020 Fear never crossed Chris’ mind. Not in the minor leagues, not at the Division-I level, not in the Long Island Championship. Not even when he was 7-years-old playing on a 9-year-old travel team playing 3rd base just 45 feet away from the batters. It’s not clear how Chris developed his fearlessness but he did admire and adopt the grittiness of the late 90s Yankees; although his favorite player may come as a surprise. “My favorite player growing up was Chad Curtis,” he said citing the 10-year veteran that batted .264 in his career. Just about every Yankee fan from that era cites Derek Jeter as their favorite player, but Pike preferred the player that had to fight tooth-and-nail for his chance. It was a sign of things to...
It was a year to remember for Fordham LHP Matt Mikulski. The flame throwing lefty achieved just about every individual accolade possible – from single-season and program strikeout record holder, to Atlantic-10 Pitcher of the Year, to All-American to being a semifinalist for the coveted Dick Howser Award. The numbers jump off the page – 9-0 record, 1.45 ERA, 124 strikeouts, .127 AVG. It was only fitting that he capped it off by hearing his name called in the 2021 MLB Draft. While there was an outside chance he would go in the first round, ultimately he was selected in the second round (50th overall) by the San Francisco Giants. Mikulski was a part of Fordham’s 2019 historic season in which they captured the Atlantic-10 Championship and set a program record for single seaso...
Division-I: St. John’s defeated Villanova, 6-1, to conclude their season on a high note. They finish with a record of 19-21 – a very uncharacteristic under .500 season for the Johnnies. In fact it’s their first sub-.500 season since 2013 and the previous one before that was over 60 years ago. In the victory, they used a six-run second inning as the engine for the win. Justin Folz opened up the scoring with a solo HR and Carson Bartels drove in two with a single to center. Marty Higgins led the offense with three hits. Tyler Roche pitched six strong innings, allowing just one run (0 ER) and striking out eight. Joe Joe Rodriguez and Ethan Routzahn slammed the door on the victory. It will feel strange seeing a Big East tournament played without the Johnnies – they̵...
Division-I St. John’s lost the middle game of their three-game set against Villanova by the score of 7-3 to fall to 18-21 on the season. The game was tied 1-1 in the seventh before Villanova broke it open with a three-spot and then tacked on four in the 9th to open it up. Long Island-native Tyler Arella went 7 innings, allowing just 1 ER on six hits to earn his third win of the season. The Johnnies were held to just seven hits, with no player notching more than one. Tim Cunningham was tagged with the loss. They will look to avoid the sweep today at 1pm. Stony Brook stayed red-hot with a double header sweep over Binghamton. They clinched the America East Regular Season title. The Seawolves are now 28-16 on the season and 24-9 in America East play. In Game 1, Jared Milch was staked to ...
Division-I: St. John’s split a DH with Butler losing the first game, 4-1, but winning the second game, 9-4. In the win, the Johnnies trailed 2-0 entering the fourth inning, but Colin Wetterau tied it up with a two-run single and they took the lead on a two-run single by Chris Conniff. Marty Higgins‘ RBI single in the seventh was their 5th run and proved to be the winning run. Tim Cunningham earned the win in relief for the Johnnies. Joe Joe Rodriguez and Ethan Routzahn combined to lock down the final 2.1 IP. Brian Morrell led the offense with three hits. They will close out their regular season next weekend with a four-game series against Villanova. Fordham split their DH with La Salle, capturing the first game by the score of 4-2 but losing the second game, 8-4. In the win, ac...
Division-I: St. John‘s swept Butler by the scores of 9-0 and 4-0. In Game 1, Nick Mondak was lights-out. He struck out 10 over 6.0 shutout innings, allowing just three hits and one free pass. He earned his fourth win of the season. Josh Lajoie closed it out with a scoreless seventh with two punch outs. St. John’s outhit Butler, 13-3. They scored two runs in the first inning on an RBI double by Ryan Hogan and an RBI ground out by Nick Cirelli. Carson Bartels led the offense with three hits and 4 RBI. Marty Higgins had three hits as well. In Game 2, the Johnnies pitching was dynamite once again but this time they used five arms to get the shutout. Ian Murphy started and went the first 4.1 innings, Geoff Mosseau got three outs and was awarded the win. Vincent Bianchi went 3-for-3 ...
Division-I: Hofstra won an absolutely wild game, 14-11, against Delaware which featured 26 hits and 14 walks between the two teams. The Pride scored those 14 runs in just two of their innings with a five-spot in the second and nine in the seventh. The go-ahead run scored as part of that 9-run inning thanks to five bases loaded walks. Rob Weissheier further broke it open with a two-run single to left. Austin Gauthier drove in five runs including a second inning grand slam and he drew one of the bases loaded walks. Will Kennedy and Aidan Larkin each had two hits as well. Jack Jett had his first bad outing of the season for Hofstra – the grad student was tagged with 8 ER over 4.1 IP, he allowed nine hits and five walks. Michael O’Hanlon earned the win for the Pride, retiring two b...
Here we are at the official beginning of the 2021 high school baseball season. But it’s a good time to look back at how far we’ve come over the past couple years. It’s easy to forget with all the negativity and uncertainty in 2020 that we were actually coming off one of the most remarkable seasons you can imagine. Forget about the incredible about of no-hitters, walk-offs, upsets and great performances of the high school season – let’s just look at the local college programs. Division-I: Stony Brook captured their sixth America East title with a come-from-behind 7-5 victory over Binghamton. Chris Hamilton had the go-ahead hit in the sixth inning. Reliever Brandon Bonanno fired the final 3.2 innings of relief with four strikeouts to slam the door on the victory...
