Power Rankings: Week 1

It was the opening week for Division-I baseball teams. While it is always reason for excitement, the results are often underwhelming for Long Island teams considering the disadvantage of playing against southern teams that have been outside since January 1. It’s important to keep that in mind, because more often than not, a rough start to the season is not indicative of anything else. For Week 1 of our Power Rankings, we will limit it to the Division-I programs because the only Division-II school to play this weekend was LIU Post who played the 7-time Division-II National Champions. Without further ado, here she goes… Stony Brook (Record: 2-1, Trending UP) All things considered, it was about as good of an Opening Weekend for Stony Brook as they could’ve hoped for. To go d...

College Opening Day (2/15) Recap Presented by The Schwarz Institute

Ah the sweet, sweet, smell of baseball. After a long eight months away from live action, college baseball is back on Long Island. Friday night, five colleges opened up their seasons against teams on the other side of the country. The only winning team from last night’s games was Stony Brook, who defeated FIU by a score of 13-7. The offensive explosion was in part from seven different players who chipped in with RBI. 3B Michael Russell propelled the Stony Brook offense, going 3-5 at the plate with an RBI. Four different players in the Stony Brook lineup had a four-hit performance, including Dylan Resk, Michael Wilson, Brandon Alamo and John Tuccillo. Greg Marino picked up the win for Stony Brook, pitching five innings allowing only three hits, two earned runs and struck out five. Adam...

Big Board!Top College Players

This is a list of the best draft-eligible college players we’ve seen on the island. The limitations are that a) we have not seen every player and b) we have not seen every player multiple times. Nevertheless, this is based on our best resources and unbiased opinions. February 14, 2019 Vito Friscia, Junior, Hofstra Hofstra makes it 5-1 on a solo HR by Vito Friscia, his 6th of the year. pic.twitter.com/M2tHkFxsvI — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 4, 2018 Friscia has powers in droves and will be the biggest reason that scouts come out to Hofstra this season after sending three players to professional baseball last season. He has appeared more as a DH/1B as opposed to a catcher, which makes it more challenging for him, but Hofstra says he will be a catcher for the bulk of the time. Al...

Key Points From Today’s Q & A at The Cage

This afternoon, I was a guest speaker at The Cage in Riverhead, NY to discuss a bevy of topics regarding to amateur baseball, how Axcess Baseball was started and the particulars of being an MLB scout. For those that couldn’t make it, here’s some of the key points I made: If you’re good, you will be found. This seems overly simplistic but it seems to get lost on people. The prevailing thought seems to be if you are not on an elite travel team, you have no chance to get a scholarship. I can attest to the fact that several players have received scholarships and even gotten drafted without attending every showcase. Our job as a scout, and also for college colleges, is to unearth the hidden gems. Those ones are much more satisfying anyway. Your results on the field does not im...

Aidan Tornquist: Why I Chose Fordham University

(Editor’s Note: Aidan is a 2019 CF/LHP graduate of Half Hollow Hills West. He recently announced his verbal commitment to Fordham University. The following words are his own.) On Sunday, March 18, I chose to commit to Fordham University. That frigid morning, I visited Fordham with my travel baseball coach, Pete Kritikos of MVP Beast, and my parents. Coach Kevin Leighton gave me a tour around the campus for an hour-and-a-half and I immediately fell in love with the school. I’ve always found myself looking for a small campus and I found exactly that when I toured Fordham. Coach Leighton went into detail about life as a Fordham student, more specifically as a student-athlete, and the support system offered by the school to foster students with great ambition. Over the past year, I...

February 23 Recap

Division-I Fordham: Fordham defeated USF 2-0. Starter Ben Greenberg, relievers Anthony DiMeglio and Alvin Melendez combined to go the distance and allow only one hit and two walks in the shutout. Second baseman Nick Labella had one of the four hits for the Rams on the afternoon. He accounted for both of the Fordham runs, driving one in and scoring one himself. St. John’s: St. John’s stayed red-hot as they blanked Monmouth 3-0 in victory. Starter Sean Mooney pitched six solid innings of no run ball to go along with 11 strikeouts for his second win of the season. The Red Storm pounded out nine hits; Luke Stampfl, Ryan Hogan, John Valente and Josh Shaw each had two hits on the afternoon. The win makes five in a row to start the season for St. John’s. Stony Brook: Stony Brook defeated Iona 5-3...

Fordham Tops Army, 3-2, On Unusually Warm February Day

Kyle Martin closes the door with the four-out save. Fordham 3, Army 2 pic.twitter.com/bJMZ3tH1Pv — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) February 21, 2018 It felt more like the middle of June than February 21, but the players, coaches and spectators were not going to complain. The Fordham Rams topped Army, 3-2, on a 70-degree day. Make no mistake, this was extremely unusual as the Rams have never even played a home game this early in the season. The roll-of-the-dice worked out, and the Rams treated their home fans to an entertaining game. Freshman Nick Labella hit his first career home run in the third inning to give the Rams an early lead. It was no cheap home run, either, as it went into the stands well beyond the fence in left-center field. They extended their lead to 2-0 in the fou...

Is it Fordham’s Year in the Atlantic 10?

The Fordham Rams come into 2018 reloaded and ready to build off the ups-and-downs of a 27-24 campaign in 2017. The Rams started the season hot, climbing to as high as first place in the ultra-competitive Atlantic-10 Conference. However, a nine-game slide between April 18–30 set the team back and caused them to miss the playoffs all together. “Sometimes when a few guys start slumping everybody starts slumping,” head coach Kevin Leighton said. “A big part of that losing streak was we just couldn’t score runs. We talk about it with our guys constantly – you can’t get too high on the good times or too low on the bad.” Scoring runs will come at a premium this year for a Fordham team that lost stud seniors Mark Donadio and Luke Stampfl. The duo combined for over 25 percent of the team’s total RB...

The Reliever’s Walk Up Song: Why Is It So Important?

(Photo Credit: Vincent Dusovic) by Julian Guevara Over the past decade the “nail down” reliever has become one of the most important positions in baseball. This is due in part to the plethora of incredible relief pitching and closers that emerged from the late 1990s-2010. Every ballplayer in the United States knows that the last thing you want to hear at Yankee Stadium in the top of the ninth is Metallica’s “Enter Sandman”. Of course, Mariano Rivera’s cutter is what the hitters really feared; however the song plays a huge role in getting the fans involved. My favorite example is the 2012 Oakland Athletics and their closer, Grant Balfour. Balfour, a genius in my opinion, did everything he could to get all 60,000 fans at the Oakland Coliseum involved. His chosen song is also a Metallica hit,...

Podcast: Charles Galiano Discusses Playing Career, Life After Baseball

In this week’s podcast, host Vinny Messana speaks with former Commack and Fordham star catcher, Charles Galiano. Twice drafted (2012, ’15), the Commack native had a very respectable career and played two minor league seasons with the Milwaukee Brewers before a shoulder injury derailed his career prematurely. Now he is preparing for life after baseball and discusses his plans to stay involved in the Long Island baseball community.

Who Is Terrence Murray?

Grand slam by Fordham-commit Terrence Murray (Kellenberg ’18). Feature story on him coming tomorrow ? pic.twitter.com/ritVl5q501 — Axcess Baseball (@axcessbaseball) August 21, 2017 In many ways, 2017 was a banner year for Kellenberg Memorial HS. They rode an historically dominant pitching staff and a core group of seniors to a consecutive CHSAA championship. One of the unsung contributors on that team was junior Terrence Murray. He hit a respectable .280 and played a strong defense in outfield. He turned his play up a notch early on in the summer season. Murray was able to parlay that success into something much bigger. He was one of the first incoming seniors this summer to commit to a Div-I program when he verbally committed to Fordham University. He spoke with Vinny Messana a...

LI Road Warriors Take Home HCBL Championship In Inaugural Season

The Neal Heaton-led LI Road Warriors entered tonight’s Hamptons League championship game needing one win to take home the title against the Westhampton Aviators. The Road Warriors took care of business wrapping up the title with a 5-3 victory. LI jumped out to a lead again early, this time in the third inning. Yesterday’s hero would deliver once again for the Road Warriors. Jordan Folgers would come up with one out in the third, after Garrett Heaton and Sean Rausch would get a base hit and a double back-to-back. Folgers found another fastball right in his wheelhouse and knocked a towering shot to left center giving his team a 3-0 lead with one out. “I keep telling people, we have great ball players on Long Island,” said Head Coach Heaton. “We have five D-1 guys, they have, I think, f...
