They showed they were ready to go, winning the first game 6-2. Farmingdale immediately got things started in the 1st, when a double-steal plated freshman, Patrick Leach, giving the Rams their first run of the season. Yesterday, we went over the major points of interest among the high school baseball season and now we will discuss the college community. The season approaches much quicker, in fact, only 43 days until the Division-I seasons kicks off. Below are some thoughts I have as it pertains to the upcoming season… How will Hofstra replace John Rooney? Rooney is the type of arm that doesn’t come around often to a mid-major like Hofstra. He came from upstate NY and in three years turned into one of the most dynamic pitchers in the country and was drafted by the Los Angleles Dodgers. After entering the postseason red-hot and defeating USMMA in the first round, 4-1, No. 1 seed Farmingdale State was poised to return to the beacon of the Skyline Conference for the first time since 2014. Unfortunately, they did run into a dominant pitcher in Joseph Murphy that put them on the precipice of elimination, which ultimately came later that evening. They enter the 2019 returning all but one of their impact players, and they have an army of transfers that have all experienced some degree of success at the college level. “We feel we are much deeper this year than in previous seasons,” said Head Coach Keith Osik, now entering his 14th year at the helm, with seven conference championships under his belt. A Word on “The Opener”
I felt compelled to discuss this because I feel this is one of the only trends in Major League Baseball that has a chance to succeed at the lower levels, along with shifting (although we don’t have nearly the same data that they have available to them with Statcast and Sports Info Solutions). Most of the other trends, like building strikeout-machine pitching staffs, home run-dependent offenses and writing out batting orders based on lineup optimization just have no way of making its way to amateur baseball. “The Opener”, an aspect of “bullpenning” could theoretically make its way into the lower-levels of baseball such as college. Local Names Capture Minor League Championships
If you’ve been following us for a while, you are familiar with the names Matt Seelinger, Dan Jagiello and Shea Spitzbarth. All three have local ties and they all wrapped up their minor league seasons with a championship. We’ll go through each individually. Dan Jagiello (LIU Post 2017) is a member of the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes and they captured the California League Championship. Jagiello was drafted in the 34th round of the 2017 draft by the Los Angeles Dodgers following the Pioneers ECC Championship in which he was on the mound to record the final out. He entered the season as a high draft follow as a starting pitcher but settled into a role as the closer. He compiled an ERA of 1.93 with 12 saves and 38 strikeouts over 23.1 IP. Steven Rizzo & Vito Friscia Capture the 2018 Axcess Home Run Derby
On a hot & humid August afternoon, two players stole the show and stood above the rest in their respective brackets. Steven Rizzo (St. Anthony’s) captured the high school division and Vito Friscia (Hofstra) captured the college division in front of a packed crowd at Baseball Heaven. Rizzo led all high school hitters with 10 home runs, including seven in the first round. He defeated Matt Brown-Eiring (Connetquot 2020) in the championship round with two home runs. David Falco (Center Moriches 2019) smacked 3 HR, Brock Murtha (Saville 2020) hit two while Kyle Rausch (Longwood 2019) and Brown-Eiring each hit one. The college age players put on a clinic. Matt Seelinger Traded to Tampa Bay for Adeiny Hechavarria
In a surprising move, the Pittsburgh Pirates acquired SS Adeiny Hechavarria from the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for Long Island native Matt Seelinger. Hechavarria was designated for assignment last Wednesday, but they wound up trading him once they found a taker. He is an established Major Leaguer, although he has never been known for his bat. The defensive wizard has a career slash line of .255/./291/.344, but has been worth +24 defensive runs saved for his career. As for Seelinger, the move came as a surprise since he was a late-round draft pick that has already emerged as a potential quick-riser through the system. Last year, he was outstanding. by Joe Pantaleo “I knew I was in trouble during the first inning,” said Vincent Rice. “On one pitch, there was an electric shock up my arm, and I just walked off the mound. I knew.” Shortly after, Rice — then a senior at Farmingdale High School — received news that all pitchers dread: he had torn his Ulnar Collateral Ligament and would need Tommy John surgery if he wanted to play baseball again. “It was actually a big game for me too. There was a lot of college scouts coming that day,” he said. Rice was one of the best high school pitchers of his class on Long Island, and he had started to gain some buzz from several local colleges that season.
