2018 Nassau County Class AA Preseason Power Rankings

With our fourth nor’easter this month upon us, who knows when opening day may be. As soon as the fields are clear, however, the high school baseball season will finally get underway. Although Class AA may be overlooked because there’s 14 teams compared to 28 teams in Class A, there’s still a significant amount of competition. Last year was about as exciting as it gets in Class AA, with Massapequa taking home the title and the Long Island Championship, so don’t expect this year to be any different. With many of the top teams returning their best players, let’s take a look at this year’s preseason top five teams. 5. Farmingdale A team that took the county by storm in 2017 is back and expected to make a deep run this season. Luckily for the Dalers, their tw...

Fall Ball Series: Farmingdale

For a span of seven years, winning a Skyline Conference championship was an annual tradition for the Farmingdale State team. I was a part of two of those titles, and there was three more after that. Something strange happened in 2015–someone else was crowned champions (Old Westbury). Then it happened again in 2016 (St. Joseph’s). And again this past year (Maritime). As the calendar approaches 2018, the Rams will be looking to return to the mountain top, a spot that was so familiar for the program. They will have to do so without two of their critical players from last season; Matt Seelinger and Dalton McCarthy, who both graduated. Seelinger was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates, becoming the first player selected in the MLB Draft since 1979. I was down at their intrasquad today...

Matt Seelinger on His First Pro Season

(Editor’s Note: Matt is a 2017 graduate of Farmingdale State College. He capped off a stellar career by getting selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 28th round of this year’s MLB Draft, becoming the first player from FSC to get drafted since 1978. He performed incredibly well in pro ball; he compiled a 1.80 ERA over 30.0 IP with 0.87 WHIP and 37 strikeouts. He allowed only 19 hits. The following words are his own.) Coming out of a “D3” school has its challenges to get drafted. Not many players get the opportunity. I certainly heard a few times that it was “near impossible” to get drafted out of a “D3” school. I was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in my senior year at Farmingdale State College. It has been a whirlwind for sure. I graduated in May. At that time, I was not ...

Pair of Freshmen Lead the Way in 7-3 Victory for Farmingdale

Final: Farmingdale 7, Port Washington 3 WP: Nick Carbone Robbie Manetta first varsity HR pic.twitter.com/ozsjdmQEk1 — aXcess Baseball (@axcessbaseball) May 9, 2017 It was a couple of youngsters who played key roles in Farmingdale‘s 7-3 victory over Port Washington today. Catcher Robbie Manetta came to the plate with the Dalers leading 4-3 in the seventh and launched his first career varsity HR over the right field fence to open the game up. He also drew two walks and played well defensively. Freshman RHP Justin Rosner threw very well over five innings, allowing 0 ER with two strikeouts, but he did not factor in the decision as the Vikings tied the game up in the sixth inning against reliever Nick Carbone on an RBI single by Ryan Meth. The Dalers responded right back wi...

Old Westbury and Farmingdale Upset In First Round

Two perennial Skyline Conference powerhouses--Old Westbury and Farmingdale–suffered stunning early exits in the first-round of the Skyline Conference tournament. Both came on their home field. The day began with No. 4 seed Old Westbury taking on No. 5 seed Mount St. Mary’s, who entered with an overall record of 13-26 (9-9 in conference). The Panthers sent Trey Pizzutello to the mound. The Knights got out to an early 1-0 lead on an RBI single by Chris Introcaso to score Nick Rizzo (Smithtown East ’16). The Panthers responded quickly with a run in the the bottom half of the third on an RBI double by Liam Slattery to score Jesse Matos. Pizzutello settled in and was dominant over the next several innings, but he was matched zero for zero by his counterpart, Blake Ke...

Pitch Count Rule Robs Angus McCloskey of Chance For No-Hitter

Thus far, 2017 has been quite a year for no-hitters. There was almost another member of the group yesterday, but due to the newly implemented pitch-count rule, that opportunity was thwarted from Farmingdale RHP Angus McCloskey. Farmingdale defeated Syosset by the score of 8-2. McCloskey had his ‘A’ game and struck out 13 through the first 6.2 IP, while holding the opposition hitless. McCloskey stated that he was aware of it prior. “I knew that last batter I faced was my last,” said McCloskey. I struck out the first two in the inning and had the last hitter 0-2 and ended up walking him because the umpire squeezed me a bit, but if the pitch count wasn’t an issue, they weren’t touching my fastball. And had all the confidence in the world that third out was ...
