Exclusive Q & A With St. John’s HC Mike Hampton

While it came as quite a surprise to many when longtime St. John’s Head Coach Ed Blankmeyer stepped down to manage the Brooklyn Cyclones, the Red Storm couldn’t have chose someone more prepared to fill in. Mike Hampton, who has been Blankmeyer’s assistant for 18 seasons, is well-suited to fill the shoes of the legendary skipper. Hampton is a 1994 graduate of Clemson University – named All-American in 1994 and drafted in the fourth round by the Cincinnati Reds. The program has reached great heights under the guidance of that duo, including nine 40-win seasons, four BIG EAST Championships and an appearance in the NCAA Super Regionals in 2012. Ed Blankmeyer Leaves St. John’s To Become New Manager of the Brooklyn Cyclones

In a surprise move, legendary St. John’s Head Coach Ed Blankmeyer has stepped down to join the New York Mets organization as manager of the Brooklyn Cyclones and extended Spring Training coordinator. Blankmeyer is the winningest coach in Red Storm history as well as BIG EAST history. He has compiled a record of 829-500-4 over his 24 seasons. Under his guidance, the Red Storm have won five BIG EAST tournament championships and 23 winning seasons. Additionally, he has appeared in one Super Regional in 2012. He has been named BIG EAST Coach of the Year a staggering eight times and notched 40-win seasons on 9 occasions. Even by the lofty standards of St. John’s skipper Ed Blankmeyer–758 wins and four Big East tournament crowns–there is much to be excited about when reflecting on the 2017 season of his Red Storm. They burst out of the gate red-hot with their best start since the days of MLB legend John Franco and Frank Viola in 1980. They began the season with nine consecutive wins and were nationally ranked by every major publication from the jump. Nine-Run Sixth Powers St. John’s to 21st Win

When you’re hot, you’re hot. The St. John’s Red Storm overpowered the Hofstra Pride, coming away with a 14-3 win for their ninth consecutive victory. “It feels good when you win, it’s nice to see our guys start swinging the bat in the middle of the game.” Head Coach Ed Blankmeyer said after the win. “Another game, another step.” The Red Storm took the lead early on a single from Jesse Berardi scoring Michael Donadio.
