In the two squad’s regular season matchup, Mike Oliveto emerged as the hero by hitting a walk-off grand slam, capping off a storybook 10-7 victory. Today, he played the hero again. Spearheaded by standout performances from Oliveto and Matt Neglia, Hauppauge’s seasoned squad, boasting 13 seniors, showed their experience in a hard-fought 4-2 win this afternoon. Hauppauge’s offens...

🚨 WALK OFF GRAND SLAM 🚨 Hauppauge junior Mike Oliveto crushes a walk-off grand slam as the Eagles overcame a late 7-2 deficit to win 10-7 and improve to 7-0 pic.twitter.com/aFHDWjUBaF — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) April 8, 2024 As far as endings go, it doesn’t get any more dramatic than a walk-off grand slam. Hauppauge junior Mike Oliveto was able to experience the pure jubilation of turning a deficit into a victory for the Eagles against rival East Islip, in the first game of a crucial three-game set which could determine Suffolk County League 5. “It’s feels great…it feels amazing,” said Oliveto, in the moments following his heroics. Clearly at a loss for words, the junior was overcome with excitement after getting mobbed at home plate by his teammat...

And for the East Islip Redmen, the future is now. Despite only having two seniors on their roster last season, head coach Sal Ciampi was encouraged by the team’s season last year, as well as the progress he saw in many of his younger players. “Last year went pretty good.” Ciampi said. “We were a very young team. Q & A With SUNY Old Westbury-commit Jonathan Kortright

This week, Jonathan Kortright was the recipient of the Spirit Award issued by the Kortright Kares Foundation. Jonathan just graduated from East Islip HS where he played for Coach Sal Ciampi on the Redmen team that reached the postseason each of the past two seasons and prior to him being on varsity, they won the Conference IV Long Island Championship in 2021 over Bethpage. Jonathan will be headed to SUNY Old Westbury in the fall to play for Rod Stephan on the Panthers. I had a chance to speak with him and here’s what he had to say… Who are your biggest influences in life? My dad because he taught me how to play baseball and he taught me how to play hard, work hard and always make sure to control my emotions on and off the field. What was your experience like picking which colle...

Offense Powers East Islip Over the Top Against Hauppauge

by Andy Smith East Islip 11 Hauppauge 6 WP Nick Rizzo Veltman and Kneisel both had 3RBIs for East Islip pic.twitter.com/vbD8CTeub5 — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 1, 2023 It was a cold, windy day but the offenses were hot and tallied a combined seventeen runs by a score of 11-6 with East Islip as the victor. The Eagles got to Nick Rizzo in the first inning and scored three runs off a two-run triple by first baseman Mike Oliveto, who was able to round home plate off a throwing error.  The Redmen responded in the bottom half of the frame by putting up four runs to give them a one-run lead. Left fielder Thomas Costarelli got things started with a lead-off single. Then, Alex Johnston reached first, which was followed by a base on balls to Rizzo which loaded the bases. Then following...

Kings Park Clinches Postseason Berth for First Time Since 2018

Hunter Colagrande fired a 2-hit CG shutout in a 1-0 win to clinch a playoff spot for Kings Park pic.twitter.com/jMSOiy3pCY — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) April 24, 2023 It’s tough to get a better pitching matchup than the one we had today at East Islip. The 2021 Long Island Champs hosted Kings Park, who entered with a record of 9-3 and looking to clinch their first postseason berth since 2018. The pitching match up was a pair of Stony Brook-commits – RHP Hunter Colagrande (Kings Park) and LHP Nick Rizzo (East Islip). Stony Brook HC Matt Senk was in attendance to get a glimpse of two of his future pitchers. For those in attendance, you just got the sense that offense would be at a premium. Both pitchers were at their best today and one run would be enough – the que...

Pro potential pic.twitter.com/UM76wEV7Sv — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) February 6, 2022 In 2021, East Islip absolutely dominated and captured the Long Island Championship over Bethpage in a blowout. Many of the starters from that team went on to play in college and have established themselves as legitimate college players – RHP John Rizzo, catcher Ryan Thompson, SS Ryan Ferremi, to name a few. Entering 2023, only 2 players remain from that team and it’s Stony Brook-commit Nick Rizzo and Adelphi-commit CF Anthony Rigogliosi. Last year’s team was senior-laden as well, but they did not have the necessary pieces to make a return to the County Championship, as...

Nick Rizzo, East Islip With Gritty Road Win at ESM

Nick Rizzo fired a complete game in East Islip’s 8-4 win over Eastport-South Manor pic.twitter.com/sU1te6NRHz — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 17, 2022 As far as postseason assignments go, facing an undefeated Division-I commit on the road is about as tough as it gets. East Islip, the reigning Long Island Champions, would not let that slow them down as they came away with an 8-4 victory in the first round of the Suffolk Conference IV playoffs against Eastport-South Manor. The Redmen scored a run in each of the first three innings against Hostra-commit Jake Deslauriers who entered the game with an unblemished record of 7-0, 0.83 ERA and 0.85 WHIP. They broke the game open with a five-spot in the fifth inning to make it an 8-3 ballgame. East Islip had their own Division-I com...

Assistant Coach Chris Padgur spoke to Axcess Baseball about capturing the team’s first county championship since 2006 and first Long Island Championship since 1991. The Redmen rattled off 10 wins in a row to end the season – as they peaked at the exact right time. They cruised past Harborfields in the Suffolk County Conference IV Finals by the score of 14-3 behind sophomore LHP Nick Rizzo. To reach that game, it was his older brother, John, who was lights out against ...

Recapping A Thrilling Day of County Championships

It doesn’t get much better than 10 elimination games across Long Island to crown County Champions. Scratch that, it doesn’t get ANY better than that. The games ranged from Sag Harbor to South Side, and the great majority of them were close. I wish I could be at all the games but that’s just not possible, so I took my best guess as to which game to cover. I started at Sachem East, stayed for a few innings and made the short drive to Selden for Newfield’s game. The decision worked out well as Commack got out to an early 4-1 lead then I went to a Newfield and the score was 0-0 in the second inning. Here’s all the action. Nassau III South Side defeated Manhasset, 2-0, on the road behind a complete game, two-hit shutout by Danny Russell. This was a remarkable turn ...

Ventimiglia, Johnson and Rizzo Throw Gems on Day 2

What a thrilling day of baseball on Saturday it was for Day 2 of the Coaches Memorial Weekend hosted by the Town of Brookhaven. I bounced around from field-to-field but was locked in on Sayville-Westhampton Beach at 2pm, Longwood,-William Floyd at 4, then Newfield-Smithtown West & East Islip-Hills West at 8pm. It was a sensory overload of baseball and during one stretch in the evening there was just screaming and pure jubilation from all four fields at Moriches Complex. Just a few thoughts from the day: Sayville defeated Westhampton Beach 7-0, with Felician-commit Jack Turner starting and getting the win for the Golden Flashes. He is their staff ace and looked every bit that part even against a really tough lineup which will score a lot of runs this year – led by Jack Halloran, F...

Matt McHugh, Nick Baldino Lead East Islip to 4-0 Win Over West Babylon

They lead 4-0 as we head to the bottom of the seventh pic.twitter.com/r19Pgt4kid — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) April 30, 2019 Matt McHugh was pitching like he had a plane to catch. He needed just 72 pitches to fire a complete game 1-hit shutout in a 4-0 victory over West Babylon. “I was trying to get guys out as quickly as possible is what I was trying to do,” said McHugh. The problem was his counterpart, St. Joseph’s-commit Tyler Gamba was doing the same. Inning-after-inning each pitcher was mowing down the opposition. In fact, the teams were able to complete five innings in one hour as each pitcher was throwing strikes and working quickly. The Redmen offense, which had been str...
