The Bonackers qualified for the playoffs for the first time in eleven years and finished with an 11-9 record. Eighth year head coach Vincent Alversa, a former NCAA DIvision-III pitcher at Mitchell College, reflected on the progress made last season and how the program has evolved. “We have been developing the program for some time now and we believe we are just starting to come around. Playoff experience is big and we hope to build off of it and return again this season.” East Hampton will be without two key impact players in 2023. George Washington Co...
Playing on the east end of Long Island could present some inherent challenges for athletes as they fight to get the recognition they deserve over players more centrally located on the island. Aside from the geographic challenge to get college coaches at schools, there is always the question of the quality of the opponent so it can be tough to look at statistics and see what’s real. A big way to overcome that is through sheer hard work. Eventually, the cream rises to the top and when you get recognized or invited to major events – it legitimizes the hype. So when East Hampton RHP Colin Ruddy was invited to the Area Code Underclass Tournament this summer, it certainly made some waves. (Photo Credit: Craig Macnaughton ) With a young team, wins don’t come easy. But young teams bring more experience to the table the following season. After a three-win 2018 season, East Hampton High School baseball head coach Vincent Alvera said the youth of the team was the story line last season. “We had a pretty young squad,” Alvera said. “We only lost three seniors last year. Now we have four seniors.” “We were so young it wasn’t really going together,” he added. The team was on a 51-game losing streak before winning their final three games of the 2018 season. “It was nice to get away with a win,” Alvera said. “It was a good way to end the season and hopefully bring that into this year.” In 2019, the team is led by junior Elian Abreu, who spends time on the mound as well as in the outfi...
