Since MLB condensed the amateur draft in 2020, it has severely impacted the northeast region. That does not figure to change any time soon with the implementation of the 20-round draft. Historically, most Long Island players would be selected on Day 3 (Round 11-40) which just means there’s less of an opportunity for the local players to have a chance. With that said, there was still some that had their dreams fulfilled this week. Let’s break it down: Round 10 – Milwaukee Brewers – Brian Fitzpatrick (St. Anthony’s 2018, Rutgers University) 6’7 LHP Brian Fitzpatrick (St. Anthony’s/Rutgers) is back from Tommy John and up to 93 MPH pic.twitter.com/9VxNoGiDIj — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) January 11, 2020 Fitz is a 6’7 southpaw that domin...
Giancarlo Giacometti fires 6.1 innings today against Kellenberg in a 6-1 victory for St. John the Baptist. He’s our @BsbLifestyle101 Player of the Game pic.twitter.com/sRz2Bffj67 — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) April 9, 2019 With several MLB scouts lined up behind home plate, Giancarlo Giacometti shined the brightest on a dreary day in East Meadow on Opening Day for St. John the Baptist. The crafty right-handed pitcher was unflappable, as he fired 6.1 strong innings in a 6-1 win for the Cougars over Kellenberg. He noted that he was excited for today and had it marked on his calendar facing Miami-commit Jason Diaz. “‘Especially being Opening Day, I just wanted to get the win,” said the right-hander. After going down 1-2-3 in the first, they had a huge second i...
If there is one thing that’s consistent across all sports, it’s that teams who get hot at the end of the season win championships. That was exactly the case last year for the St. John the Baptist baseball team as they won 11 of their final 12 games on their way to a CSHAA league championship. And it wasn’t easy. “In [this] league, it’s almost whoever gets hot at the right time,” said St. John the Baptist head coach Casey McKay. “A lot of the games we were actually down,” he said. “We were behind or tied in every single game in the playoffs.” That includes the deciding game of the league championship where the team was down 3-0 and rallied to win the game 5-3 and their first league championship since 2014. “We don’t get high on ourselves.” McKay says that’s the reason why the 2018 team neve...
Regardless of where you’re from, who your parents are, what size you are and what your nationality is, if you’re good you will be found. People love to diminish baseball for being a sport that is tilted towards the upper-middle class that can afford to travel the nation. That is simply not the case. A good scout will locate the top players in their area. Look no further than Kyle McGowin, who hails from the smallest town in New York (Sag Harbor) or Franklin Parra who came from the Dominican Republic and made a name for himself in extremely quick fashion at a school not commonly associated with baseball prowess (Copiague). With the 2019 season right around the corner, I will attempt to name the tools associated with being an impact baseball player and name the players that posse...
Following their 2017 ECC Championship, I was very confident that it was the beginning of a prosperous period for the LIU Post Pioneers. Not just because their current team included the reigning Axcess Baseball Player of the Year (Rob Andreoli), runner-up Rookie of the Year (Noah Lorenzo) and future ECC Pitcher of the Year (James Varela), but also because the residual effect that it would have on the current players on Long Island. Coming from someone who was in that exact situation, I can attest to the fact that there is absolutely a huge percentage of players on Long Island that are looking to a) stay close to home, b) play competitive baseball and c) get a scholarship to keep playing the game they love. For me, it meant attending Adelphi as they were in the midst of a 36-win season. For ...
Final: St. John the Baptist 5, St. Dominic 3 WP: Will Lynch St. John the Baptist is the 2018 CHSAA Champions ! pic.twitter.com/xbXvtj95fl — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 28, 2018 It’s hard to have a more drastic turn of events from the fifth inning on; which began as a commanding 3-0 lead for St. Dominic with Johnny Flannigan cruising, to a go-ahead, two-run triple by Matt Lavin, immediately followed by an RBI double–that appeared to be shot out of a cannon–by Logan O’Hoppe. St. John the Baptist reliever, Will Lynch, who came on with a runner on third in the third inning wound up going the distance and completely mystifying the Bayhawks’ batters and recording the victory as the Cougars won, 5-3, to capture their first CHSAA title since 2014. “...
A bases clearing triple for Tom Force gives SJB an 8-5 lead in the sixth ! pic.twitter.com/wlUpdSOpOy — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 22, 2018 What began as a 5-0 game that appeared to be in-hand, turned into a wild nail-biter that was capped by a bases-clearing triple by Tom Force, the second of its kind for the St. John the Baptist Cougars in their 8-5 victory over Chaminade. Chaminade threatened to put a rally together in the bottom of the seventh, getting the tying run to the plate, but SS E.J. Exposito came in and promptly struck out three batters, with his last pitch registering at 87 MPH to end the game. The Cougars got out to an early lead in this one. Force hit an RBI single and catcher Logan O’Hoppe ripped a bases-clearing double to open up a 4-0 lead. O’Ho...
