In 2018, Newfield was spoiled with a bevy of power arms. On their varsity team, they had five pitchers that would commit to Division-I schools and two more that committed to Division-III schools. After graduating three of those pitchers, they were less equipped to handle a significant injury to one of their three horses. Unfortunately, that’s exactly what would happen when Chandler Giovinco went down prior to the season and required Tommy John surgery. The injury was not just a crushing blow to the pitching staff, but he also led the team with 3 HR and 26 RBI the previous season. Additionally, it was a senior that was in a leadership role. “Losing Giovinco killed us,” said Eric Joyner, now entering his fifth year at the helm. “Not just on the mound but at the plate....
(Editor’s Note: Dylan Johnson is a 2021 graduate of Newfield HS. He recently committed to St. John’s University. He is expected to anchor the Wolverines rotation once again this season. He really came into his own in 2019 after Newfield lost their ace in the preseason which propelled him into the role of staff ace. He handled the challenge and he will be counted on to lead the charge in 2020.) The importance of Christmas to me is more than just presents and food. Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. That is the reason of the season and I wouldn’t be where I am today without my faith. A tradition my family does is every Christmas Eve we go to my aunt’s house on my dad’s side of the family and celebrate. On Christmas day first thing we do is wake up and go t...
Dylan Johnson delivers ! The sophomore rips an RBI hit and gets himself a 1-0 in a classic pitcher’s duel ! pic.twitter.com/jJEi1gFUYf — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) April 18, 2019 Baseball is a team sport, but on this day Dylan Johnson essentially was the alpha male for Newfield. The sophomore was a one-man show in a 1-0 victory over Smithtown East, delivering the walk-off single in the seventh inning and recording the win–an incredible 13-strikeout, three-hit shutout over one of the dominant teams in Suffolk County. “Coming into the inning I knew I was coming up soon, and I wanted to help my team get the win,” said Johnson, younger brother of Stony Brook freshman Kyle Johnson. “Nick pitched a great game he had everything work for him,” he noted...
It was a banner year for Newfield in 2018. After a long playoff drought of 13 years, the Wolverines were able to overcome the negativity of their near-misses and put it together for a 15-win season. That pitching staff was among the most impressive units assembled on Long Island. With three Division-I pitchers (Kyle Johnson, Bobby Vath, Ryan Wappaus), they were able to trot out a quality arm in every game of a series. In addition to that, the staff was deemed even more impressive with the commitment of Chandler Giovinco to Hofstra and the flurry of interest that Dylan Johnson has generated among high-end schools. When it’s all said and done, we will look back at a 2018 Newfield team that boasted five Division-I arms on one staff. Despite that, it was a quick postseason exit due to a ...
Kevin Bowrosen (Miller Place 2020) clears the bases with a one-out triple and Body Armor takes a 3-1 lead in the fifth pic.twitter.com/p9OMHGZbAC — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) August 24, 2018 Great hitters are able to notice patterns in opposing pitchers and capitalize when they make mistakes. James Madison-commit Kevin Bowrosen (Miller Place 2020) is that caliber of hitter. And the mistake happened to be a critical one in the fifth inning with the bases loaded with his Body Armor Titans team trailing 1-0. The Miller Place infielder took a 1-1 fastball and ripped it into the left-center field alley way to score Josh Graham, Luke Orbon and Danny Corona which proved to be the difference in the game. “The pitcher was sitting outside on me the whole time so I waited on that pitc...
Mike Freda following the 9-3 victory. He hit the bases clearing triple in the sixth to break the game open pic.twitter.com/ogUNiSt5iY — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) July 24, 2018 With the bases loaded, one out and Mike Freda at the plate, the game was at a critical point as the Body Armor were holding onto a 6-3 lead over the East End Aviators. Coax a double play and there would still be hope. Instead, the powerful catcher rippled one just inside the third-base line and it rolled all the way to the wall allowing all three base runners to score as he scampered all the way to third. “I was just sitting fastball, waiting and I drove it down the line,” said the rising sophomore at Hills West. The game was close up until that inning when the Titans put up four runs to essent...
