It is truly devastating news, as the young Harborfields grad had dealt with cancer this year and unfortunately lost his battle. Phelan flourished two years ago and signed as an undrafted free agent out of high school after the 2020 season was cancelled due to COVID. The southpaw made five relief appearances in 2021 and posted a stellar 0.93 ERA. He was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma in April 2022 and his teammates and friends rallied beh...

Corey Phelan Signs With the Philadelphia Phillies

2020 has taken a lot from us but not all hope was lot. Despite the truncated MLB Draft that eliminated all Long Island players from hearing their names selected, a few players with local ties have still made their way into professional baseball thanks to the post-draft signing period. Corey Phelan (Harborfields 2020) is the latest player to have his dreams of signing professionally come to fruition. Last week the hard-throwing LHP signed a professional contract worth $20,000 with the Philadelphia Phillies. They have done extremely well in locking up local talent thanks in large part to Sal Agostinelli‘s scouting eye and his ties to Long Island. He will join a list of LI’ers that include Nick Fanti, Kyle Young, Ben Brown and Logan O’Hoppe that are in the Phillies organizat...

Harborfields Poised For a Playoff Run

After three straight seasons of first-round postseason losses, Harborfields appears ready to break through. Coach Casey Sturm says they “are ready to change that.” He will go to battle in League 5 with a roster filled with high-end players. He stated that outside of 2018, “this is probably the most talented team we’ve had, but at the end of the day you’ve gotta play.” The strength of the team is certainly the starting rotation. They return four capable pitchers, led by New York Tech-commit Jack Greco. He is entering his fourth year of varsity baseball and is one of the top pitchers on Long Island. “He has grown leaps & bounds each year,” said Sturm. “Last year was probably his best year. He can basically do whatever is necessary ...

Get to Know Corey Phelan

Corey Phelan is a 2020 graduate of Harborfields HS. He is the younger brother of St. Joseph’s freshman, Connor Phelan, and the son of former Cold Spring Harbor coach, Chris Phelan. He announced his verbal commitment to Division-II powerhouse Flagler College yesterday. I had a chance to speak with him and here’s what he had to say… Can you explain your experience with the college recruiting process and why you chose Flagler? My experience with the college recruiting process was very difficult. I was blessed to have received offers from Div-I, Div-II and Div-III schools. They were all very good baseball programs and academic schools. I visited Flagler College when I was 14-years-old and fell in love with the school. I was blessed to receive an offer from Coach Barnett and I...

Who Are the Top Remaining Uncommitted 2020 Players?

While it has become common place for players to commit to Division-I schools after their sophomore season of high school, there are plenty of quality players that do not. Whether it be sustaining an injury or simply slipping through the proverbial cracks, there are bound to be dozens of impact players that remain uncommitted entering their senior year of high schools. Here is my list of the top impact players, all of these are kids that possess the ability to play at the collegiate level, possibly even start immediately. They fell behind 1-0 in the third on an RBI single by Kurt Matthews. The offense was dormant for the first two innings against East Hampton starter Colin Ruddy, but they got going in the third inning. Luke Mee hit a one-out single and moved to second on a walk to Jack Greco. Sean Keys tied it up on a bloop single to left field and James Romanelli gave them the lead with a singl...
