Our @DigmiNation Player of the Game is Joey Savino who fired a 2-hit shutout over Newfield in a 3-0 victory. He needed only 75 pitches. They will face Bay Shore tomorrow #TipYourCap pic.twitter.com/kTvsHkthLo — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 14, 2018 After a loss in the county semifinals a year ago, Connetquot enters 2019 hungrier than ever, especially having their season end on their home turf, 3-2, to Eastport-South Manor. Not only are they eager for a chance at revenge, but they come into the season loaded. They return arguably the top pitching staff on the island with a pair of Division-I commits and a couple others with scholarships in their future. “The elimination to Eastport-South Manor still hurts and it is a rallying cry for a team that’s loaded with talent,...
Vinny: Hello and welcome to the Axcess Baseball podcast. I’m your host Vinny Messana. We’re joined here with a special guest Matt Budderman, Head Coach over at Connetquot High School. Just finished up his first year with the Thunderbirds leading them to a post season appearance, another great year for them. Didn’t finish the job, but they had a very young team and they’re looking at a very promising season coming in 2019. Coach, thanks for coming on the podcast. Thank you for your time. I appreciate it. Coach: My pleasure. Thanks for coming here. Vinny: So, before we talk about last year, let’s talk a little bit about yourself for our audience that might not be familiar. I’ll. What’s your background with the game of baseball? Coach: Besides being ...
On a hot & humid August afternoon, two players stole the show and stood above the rest in their respective brackets. Steven Rizzo (St. Anthony’s) captured the high school division and Vito Friscia (Hofstra) captured the college division in front of a packed crowd at Baseball Heaven. Rizzo led all high school hitters with 10 home runs, including seven in the first round. He defeated Matt Brown-Eiring (Connetquot 2020) in the championship round with two home runs. David Falco (Center Moriches 2019) smacked 3 HR, Brock Murtha (Saville 2020) hit two while Kyle Rausch (Longwood 2019) and Brown-Eiring each hit one. The college age players put on a clinic. St. Joseph 1B Paul Britt hit four home runs. He is a finalist for our Axcess Most Valuable Player for his amazing 2018 season for th...
CORAM, NY–Today was the first day of the Elite College Recruiting Showcase (ECR) at Diamond in the Pines. The weather forced the afternoon to come to an early end, but there was three hours worth of action which included players running the 60, taking BP, infield/outfield and a showcase-style game. Schools in attendance included St. John’s, Fordham, Stony Brook, Hofstra, Sacred Heart, George Washington, Penn State, Florida International, Kansas State, Boston College, among several others. Below are some of my observations… Dillon Ristano (Hewlett 2019) He was very impressive behind the plate, with a pop time ranging between 1.95 and 2.02. Very quick, accurate throws. Also made solid contact with a single through the middle. Sean Coveny (Commack 2019) He came out of nowher...
I think we’ve seen plenty of examples the past few years in high school baseball that you really only need two dominant starting pitchers to make a run at a county championship. Eastport-South Manor was able to reach the Class AA Finals led by two workhorses (Ryan Foran and Alex Doskoez) but they fell short by one game to West Islip that also had a dynamic duo in Mike LaDonna and Bobby DiCapua. In Class A, it was Rocky Point who captured their first county title led by Joey Grillo and Robert Milopsky. It was the same story in Nassau County as Massapequa rode the right arms of Christian DeNave and Chris Mantione all the way to winning the Class AA New York Championship. But that was last year, in this article we will examine which teams have the best 1-2 punch atop their rotation for ...
Week 5 in our 16-part podcast series from The Turning Point in Farmingdale, NY.
Eastport-South Manor is headed to the Suffolk Class AA Finals with a 3-2 victory ! pic.twitter.com/qfosu0J54T — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 25, 2018 Six years ago it was on this same field that the Eastport-South Manor Sharks had a chance to win a county championship against Connetquot. They had better fortunes this time around as they are now one step closer to accomplishing that feat. They held off Connetquot’s late rally to win 3-2 and they have a date with West Islip on Sunday. Starting pitcher Alex Doskoez was efficient and used his defense all game, striking out five batters in a complete game victory. He proved his mettle on a number of occasions, stranding runners in scoring position in the first, fifth and sixth innings and seventh innings; exemplifying the clas...
Our @DigmiNation player of the game: Joey Savino. He pitched a complete game while only allowing one run to save the T-Birds from elimination. He spoke with @jpaura24 after the game. pic.twitter.com/HoSCzK5Zy6 — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 21, 2018 After earning an upset win over #9 Connetquot (15-8) on Thursday, #17 Bay Shore fell to the Thunderbirds 4-1 Monday afternoon for their first loss in the Suffolk AA Playoffs. Both teams now have one loss in the double-elimination tournament and will play each other on Tuesday. Connetquot won behind another stellar pitching performance from Joey Savino. The junior, who has yet to commit to a college, was coming off a two-hit, complete game shutout against Newfield on Friday and picked up right where he left off on Monday. Our Digmi P...
Our @DigmiNation Player of the Game is Joey Savino who fired a 2-hit shutout over Newfield in a 3-0 victory. He needed only 75 pitches. They will face Bay Shore tomorrow #TipYourCap pic.twitter.com/kTvsHkthLo — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 14, 2018 Newfield had a 15-win regular season but ran into a buzzsaw today and it was junior RHP Joey Savino. The hard-throwing 6’3″ RHP was lights-out from the first pitch of the game until his 75th and final pitch of the game. He allowed just a single in the second and another in the sixth as No. 9 Connetquot advances in the winner’s bracket over No. 8 Newfield. Savino said it “felt great” but deferred praise to his teammates noting the “defense was awesome and the hitting was awesome,” adding that ...

McHugh on his heroics and the big victory for Commack pic.twitter.com/iPsFTVnEsG Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) April 9, 2018 If there was one person to avoid seeing with the bases loaded, two-outs protecting a one-run lead it’s TCU-commit, Tim McHugh, who happens to have the best raw power of any player on Long Island. The 6’4″ slugger took the first pitch for a ball before connecting and launching a go-ahead grand slam over the center field wall to turn a 3-2 deficit into a 6-3 lead for the Commack Cougars, who entered the inning trailing 3-1 with only two hits in the game. Reliever Drew Vincent came on to protect the lead and record the victory with a 1-2-3 seventh inning. The game started out with both pitchers dominating. Jake Krzemienski started for the...
