What is the Best School to Recruit From?

Those who follow closely know that there are high-level, impact players all over the island. A small number of the schools are responsible for a vast majority of the best players. Obviously, there are external factors that give certain schools advantages such as the socio-economics of the city, the average income of the parents, demographics, the quality of the school’s head coach/athletic director. Here is my best effort to compile a list of some of the other best high schools to recruit from… Shoreham-Wading River: They have had three Carl Yastrzemski Award winners (Keith Osik, Mike O’Reilly, Brian Morrell–twice), and a handful of other high-end Div-I players (Eric Strovink, Bryan Sabatella, Tyler Osik, Nick Bottari just to name a few) and they just graduated four players he...

This was a team coming off a 14-win season and a playoff run with arguably the best staff on Long Island. Three months later they are celebrating their first Suffolk County Class AA championship since 1997 after their 8-6 back-and-forth victory over the reigning Long Island Champion West Islip Lions. Senior Pete Theodorellis, who tied the game up at 6-6 in the sixth inning with a double off the fence–and fired 8.2 IP yesterday–never wavered in his optimism with this team. Even during that ...

Commack Pulls Off Comeback Walk-Off In Extra Inning Thriller To Take Game One, 2-1.

First year Commack head coach Bryan Bonin was fired up with his team taking game one of the Suffolk County Class AA finals from West Islip. The first of a three game set was a classic pitcher’s duel in every sense of the term between WI senior Joe Valentino and Commack’s senior ace, Peter Theodorellis. West Islip scored one in the top half and Commack responded with two of their own to win it. “That was just a tough win, we teach the guys all season long to just stick together and good things will happen; do what we practice, and it worked out for us today, we got one more to win.” said Bonin. The intensity of this extra-inning game was felt throughout, as St. John The Baptist has one big section of bleachers forcing opposing fans to sit together. Theodorellis and Valentino both had ...

Commack Advances to Class AA Finals Amidst Pitch-Count Controversy

Final: Commack 7, Pat-Med 2 WP: Johnny Pohlman (6.2 IP, 0 ER) Commack advances to the Class AA Finals pic.twitter.com/6V3yJOfGhl — aXcess Baseball (@axcessbaseball) May 26, 2017 (Disclaimer: I was not in attendance for this game, as I was covering West Islip-Ward Melville. The following is based off of spectators that were in attendance) Commack (20-3) defeated Pat-Med by the score of 7-2 at St. Joseph’s College to advance to the Suffolk County Class AA Finals on Monday against the reigning champion West Islip. College of St. Rose-commit Johnny Pohlman fanned 11 over 6.2 IP to earn his seventh win of the season. Entering the seventh inning, however, Pohlman was inching close to the NYSPHSAA pitch-count limit of 125 for a postseason game. The rule has been a h...

Preview for the Suffolk County Class AA Semifinals

This week the stage is set for the Suffolk County Class AA semifinals. Due to the suspended game on Friday between No. 2 Ward Melville-No. 9 Smithtown East, they will play tomorrow (weather pending) for the chance to play No. 4 West Islip on Tuesday in the first game of a best-of-three series. Also on Tuesday, No. 2 Commack will square off with No. 13 Pat-Med. Ward Melville vs Smithtown East: What to Expect:  These teams have met twice so far, with Smithtown East winning last Wednesday, while Ward Melville won Friday/Saturday’s suspended game. Ward Melville will most likely throw ace Ben Brown, who has been tremendous all season, and Smithtown East will either throw Doug Goodwin or Nick Harvey. Both teams are well-disciplined, play great defense and can win close games. Ward Melville...

Jake Krzemienski Delivers Go-Ahead RBI Single to Propel Commack to 2-1 Victory

Final: Commack 2, Hauppauge 1 WP: Johnny Pohlman (complete game) Krzemienski go-ahead RBI single pic.twitter.com/wxeBR8Wrf9 — aXcess Baseball (@axcessbaseball) May 17, 2017 Johnny Pohlman didn’t have his best command in the first inning, walking the bases loaded but showed his intestinal fortitude by making the big pitches when it counted. He wound up firing a complete game with nine strikeouts, allowing only one run on two hits with six walks in Commack’s 2-1 victory over Hauppauge in the second round of the Class AA playoffs. “I really couldn’t find my fastball to begin with,” said the College of St. Rose-commit. “I had trouble in the beginning, but once I found my change up, and everything was able to set into place, I was able to keep the hitter...

Brian Morrisey Fires Two-Hitter With 14 Ks Against Connetquot

One of the signs of a great pitcher is dominating the top competition. Brian Morrisey certainly did that today in Commack’s 7-0 shutout over League 2 rival Connequot. The Stony Brook-commit struck out 14 batters, allowing only two hits, walking two and hitting one batter as the Cougars improved to 4-0 on the season after last week’s sweep of Central Islip. He was fired up, displaying tons of raw emotion after his clutch strikeouts. “I just wanted the team to be pumped as much as I was,” said the aXcess pre-season top 30 player. “First series was more of an easy sweep, we had some fun but this series we wanted to come back out really good,” he added. He impressed the bevy of MLB scouts that were in attendance with advanced feel for three pitches and ...

Suffolk Class AA Predictions

We’ve given you the top story lines to follow this year. We’ve given you the top individuals that could get drafted. Class AA Player of the Year: Peter Theodorellis (Commack) Pitcher of the Year: Ben Brown (Ward Melville)  League 1: There is a ton of parity in the league this year. With the emergence of Longwood last year, the expected improvement of Sachem East and the usual head-butting of Ward Melville and Pat-Med for the league title, things will get interesting. Brentwood could make some noise too with ace pitcher Justin Aviles getting rave reviews as a sleeper pick this year for All-County. Floyd has a pitching staff led by Robert Brust an...
