League MVPs Announced
It’s always an exciting day when the League/Conference MVPs are announced because after the Long Island Championships, you’re expecting a slow news day and then the list drops and it’s another hit of news. To be fair, the list didn’t actually drop but I was able to find out the winners and here they are. Quick note: Nassau opted to award a Most Valuable Position Player as well as Most Valuable Pitcher, whereas Suffolk just named one player. Naturally, many players in Suffolk will feel slighted if they felt they had a case to win. The next big announcement will be the two Diamond Award winners as well as the Carl Yastrzemski Award, Paul Gibson Award and Silver Slugger. We had already seen a game-tying, two-strike, go-ahead home run in the previous inning and a game-tying error in the previous half inning that briefly put a scare in the Tigers. Mike Herbst Hoping His Final Season Will Be One to Remember
Mike Herbst wants to go out with a bang. The longtime Bay Shore head coach notified his athletic director today that 2021 would be his final season at the helm. He has been with the program since 2005 and the head coach since 2010. He stated that this is a special group and this is the one he wants to go out with. Last season had the makings of a deep postseason run as well. Their seniors included OF Ryan Brewer (Johns Hopkins), 6’4 Jayden Colon who opted to go into the military and LHP Ryan Smerechniak (Ithaca). Brewer hit .429 with 20 RBI, 12 runs scored and .571 OBP in 2019 and was set to bat in the middle of the order. Get to Know Coltrane Calloway
One of the top players in the 2021 class came off the board yesterday. Coltrane Calloway, a junior at Bay Shore HS, committed to Seton Hall University. For those who have been following us since the Baseball on the Island days, you may be familiar with Coltrane. It was September 2016 when we covered a Body Armor vs Team Beast game at Baseball Heaven. Calloway, then on Team Beast, was the best player on the field. It was on the small field, but he threw a complete game and hit a home run, providing a glimpse into his future.
