by Mike Merolle A rainy Saturday made way for an eventful Sunday in college baseball. A 13-game winning streak was snapped, three doubleheaders took place, and a boatload of scoring in Division II and III was done on Sunday.  Division-I: Hofstra 5 — Northeastern 13  In a CAA matchup, Northeastern visited Hofstra and won their 16th game of the season, 13-5. The Huskies won the series 2-1.  Northeastern got going quickly as they scored five runs in the first inning. On the mound for the Pride, Henry Cade surrendered the runs to an RBI single, double, a sacrifice fly, and a wild pitch. After allowing another run in the second off the Huskies stealing home, Cade was pulled finishing the day with six earned runs on four hits allowed and three strikeouts in 1.2 innings pitched.  In the third, Wi...

By Max Edelman Division-I: Hofstra: G1: Hofstra 3 – Northeastern 2 G2: Northeastern 13 – Hofstra 9  The Hofstra Pride opened their conference play at home with a doubleheader split against the Northeastern Huskies. The Pride were victorious in the first game 3-2, before suffering a defeat in the second game, losing 13-9 in an offensive shootout. In the first game, all five runs were scored in the first inning. The scoring was opened by the Huskies just two batters into the game when Tyler MacGregor connected on a two-run home run to give Northeastern an early lead in the contest. However, Hofstra immediately responded in the bottom of the first frame when Luke Masiuk drove in two on a double. One batter later, Matt Pelcher brought in the go-ahead, and eventual game-winning run....

by Max Edelman It was a busy day of college baseball for the locals. Here’s how it went down: Division-I: St. John’s 19, Rider 3 JOHNNIES WIN!! Make it eight straight wins! 🔴🌩️ pic.twitter.com/31COU1emm5 — St. John’s Baseball (@StJohnsBaseball) March 15, 2024 The St. John’s Red Storm’s offense led the way in a 19-3 dominant home victory over the Rider Broncos 19-3. The Johnnies scored in all but two innings en route to a complete performance and win over the Broncos. The Red Storm offense was led by Ben Beauchamp and Jimmy Keenan, who each had three RBIs in the game. Jackon Tucker, Max Aude, and Anthony Brienza each had two, and five other St John’s batters had one. Jackson led the team in extra-base hits with two, one double and one triple. A freshman impressed yet again on the Division I stage and there were a few Division III doubleheaders.  Division I  Stony Brook 4 — Siena 3  It was a clean sweep for Stony Brook this weekend in their home-opening series against Siena. The Seawolves hosted the matchup in Joe Nathan Field on Saturday afternoon. Stony Brook got their seventh win of the season after coming out on top, 4-3.  Stony Brook got the scoring going early. Erik Paulsen Jr. hit an RBI double in the first inning to score Cam Santerre. Following that, Matt Brown-Eiring hit a single that led to Paulsen scoring on a throwing error by Siena’s left fielder Sean Camacho.  Santerre made a surprising play in the fifth when h...

by Max Edelman With the calendar turning to March, each of the local teams are in action each week. This week pitted two of the colleges against each other for a weekend series. Here’s how it all went down. Division-I: Hofstra vs St. John’s G1: St Johns 3 – Hofstra 2 G2: St John’s 10 – Hofstra 1 The Hofstra Pride and St. John’s Red Storm battled in a double header in Queens that saw the Red Storm defeat the Pride in both games. They won 3-2 in the opening game before exploding to a dominant 10-1 victory in game two. For the Red Storm, they have won four in a row, and remain undefeated at home. While the Pride drop to 4-8 and have dropped their last four games. Although the Pride and Red Storm combined for 19 hits in the first game, the teams only scored a combined five ru...

by Mike Merolle With the stormy weather to start the weekend, there were postponements of games for our slate of baseball. There were no Saturday matchups for the local Division-II and Division-III schools due to rain. However, there was more Division-I action.  Division-I: Stony Brook 5 — Virginia Tech 11  Stony Brook visited Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia on Saturday for an early-season matchup. The Seawolves fell short after losing 11-5 despite a decent amount of offense coming from their end.  Freshman Erik Paulsen notched three hits including his first collegiate home run. Last week, Paulsen provided a large impact on the mound in their 5-2 upset victory over the reigning NCAA baseball champs LSU. by Max Edelman Division-I: Stony Brook: VT 6 – Stony Brook 3  The Stony Brook Seawolves opened their three game series on the road against the Virginia Tech Hokies with a 6-3 loss on Friday. Despite collecting nine hits to the Hokies eight, runners left on base killed the Seawolves, who left 11 runners on base during the game.  Only one Seawolf collected an RBI in the game. Brett Paulsen scored Cam Santerre on a walk. The other two Seawolves runs were scored by Evan Fox and Ryan Micheli on an error. All three Seawolves runs came in the seventh inning. Fox led the team in hits with three. Matt Brown-Eiring was right behind him with two of his own, including the teams only extra base hit.  Eddie Smink started the game for the Seawolves and was the losing pitcher. The college baseball season is in full swing and we had an exciting upset down in Baton Rouge that had baseball fans feeling like it was 2012 all over again! Here’s how it went down: Division-I Stony Brook 5 – LSU 2 The Stony Brook Seawolves went on the road and shocked the No. 2 ranked Louisiana State University Tigers 5-2. After the two teams scored two runs each in the second inning, the Tigers were held scoreless for the remainder of the game, while the Seawolves offense scored one run in the fourth, and two in the eighth to give Stony Brook an improbable victory over LSU, handing the Tigers there first loss of the year.
