Division-I: Hofstra was fortunate to come out of Saturday with a double header split at the hands of Elon. In game one, they were defeated 7-0. Throughout the game, the only strung together six hits and suffered four errors defensively. In game two of the series, Hofstra bounced back as they won 6-4. This win was highlighted by their pitching. Ryan Rue earned his third win of the year, as he threw six shutout innings allowing just five hits. Andrew Mundy got the three inning save in relief. Hofstra now stands at 14-28 on the year. They play LIU Brooklyn on Tuesday. In two one-run games, Fordham had a highly stressful Saturday of baseball. While the calendar says May, yesterday certainly didn’t feel like it. I was at the Skyline Conference tournament at Farmingdale which featured one rain delay of 50 minutes and another delay to get 35 bags of quick dry on the field in the middle of the game. Regardless, they got all three games in and we march on. There was plenty of other action around the island and here’s how it went down: Division-I: Fordham won a crucial Atlantic-10 match up against George Mason in the first game of a three-game set. It took them 10 innings, but they came away victorious, 6-3. Matt Mikulski started and went six innings, allowing three ER while striking out 10 and walking two. Typically we only do the recaps on Saturday and Sunday morning but yesterday was pretty busy due to the rain outs. All the Division-Is were in action plus a couple of the Division-IIs. There was more rainouts as well which means today will be an uncharacteristically busy Monday for college teams. Here’s how it went down: Division-I: Stony Brook came from behind to knock off UMBC, 3-2. Down 2-0 going into the 6th, Johnny Decker would get SBU on the board with an RBI single. Brandon Janofsky would tie the game up in the following inning after he scored on a wild pitch. That wouldn’t be the last time you heard from him as he would go on to win the game in extras with an RBI single. With the monsoon yesterday, there was not much action. I was ready to head over to Brookville for the big ECC four-game set between LIU Post and NYIT but then the rains came. It was a little disappointing, they will play two today and two tomorrow as many teams will. As I’m sitting here typing, I see a sunny sky which means a full day of baseball. In the meantime, here’s the recap of the two teams that were on the road yesterday. Division-I: Hofstra had their six-game win streak snapped by CAA-rival James Madison University by the score of 8-6. It’s been tradition to only do weekend recaps for college baseball but I felt compelled to do so this morning because of a terrific day of baseball yesterday. Truth be told, the season is rapidly winding down so I want to make the most of what we have left. Let’s jump into the action: Division-I: Fordham won a thriller, 8-5, over Saint Peter’s in 10 innings. While the detractors may say that you should cruise past a team that enters with a record of 2-32, I say a win is a win. With the terrible weather yesterday morning, some fields were unplayable, but others with turf were able to push back the start times to later in the afternoon to get their games in. Here’s how it went down: Division-I: St. John’s beat Villanova, 3-1. Two pitchers were all that were needed for them as Jeff Blege started and pitched the first 5.2 innings while only giving up one. Gavin Hollowell came on and finished the game from there pitching the final 3.2 innings. Mitchell Henshaw added a homerun that would prove to be the difference in the game. Let’s dive into the action that took place on Good Friday… Division-I: Stony Brook split a doubleheader with Albany, Winning game one 8-3 but dropping a tough one in game two, 4-3. Game one saw Chris Hamilton and Brandon Allamo each get three hits and drive in three runs. Albany third baseman Brad Malm (Pat-Med 2017) hit a three-run homerun in the 1st of game two which kept Stony Brook just out of reach and playing catchup the entire game. Fordham dropped another one to St.  Louis, as their offense just couldn’t muster up enough runs today. On a beautiful Saturday afternoon, we saw plenty of competitive college baseball games on Long Island with some conference rivals going at it. Here’s how it went down: Division-I: Trailing by three runs heading into the bottom of the 8th, St. John’s came back to defeat Xavier 9-8 in 14 innings. With the victory, St. John’s avenges their Friday loss and improves their record to 19-12 on the season. Although their pitching performance wasn’t the greatest, St. John’s combined for 16 hits at the plate and shut down the Xavier offense in the late innings. Let’s just say it was not the most fruitful of days for the local college teams. If not for the fellas in Brookville, it would’ve been a big 0-for-the day. We will jump into the action: Division-I: St. John’s fell 11-8 to Xavier, who improve to 4-0 in Big East play despite having an overall record of 13-21. The Red Storm actually led 3-0 in this game from an RBI single by Mitchell Henshaw and an RBI triple by Mike Antico, but the lead did not last. Two errors put five unearned runs on the board and suddenly they trailed 5-4. They were able to tie it up on an RBI ground out by Ryan Markey and take the lead on a sac fly by Henshaw but Xavier scored six times in the eighth inning against Joe Kelly to blow the game open. What a day for baseball it was yesterday. It was the first day where the conditions were no concern at all. At 66, sunny and no wind you could say it was a perfect day. Additionally, teams in our coverage area went 20-6 which makes it that much better. Here’s how it went down. Division-I: Fordham completed the double header sweep over St. Joseph’s on Saturday to improve to a record of 19-12 on the season. In game one, they blanked St. Joseph’s 2-0. Evidently, this game was a pitchers duel. Matt Mikulski got the start for Fordham and was phenomenal, going eight innings allowing four hits, no earned runs, four walks and seven strike outs. Division-I: Stony Brook walked out of Saturday as winners in both games against Maine in their double header. With the wins, they now improve to 13-8 on the year. In game one, the Seawolves triumphed to an 8-3 victory. At the plate, four different players recorded multi-hit games. Michael Wilson went 3-3 with 2 RBI. He’s now batting a ridiculous .466 on the season. Greg Marino was the winning pitcher in this one, as he went seven innings allowing four hits and two earned runs. Game two provided much of the similar magic from game one as they beat Maine 5-3. Although they didn’t have another offensive explosion, it was a gritty victory.
