Week 4 College Baseball Power Rankings

When the first pitch was thrown by Tim Woodford in St. Joseph’s season opener yesterday, it was significant because it meant all the local had officially started their season. It was a great season opening win for the Golden Eagles, who are looking to bounce back after a disappointing first round loss at Maritime on May 1. If the first game was any indication, they look like a much more complete team this year. Without further ado, here’s how the locals stack up after four weeks of college baseball. Division-I 1.Fordham (Record: 9-6, Streak: Win 8) 2. LIU (Record: 5-6, Streak: Win 3) 3. St. John’s (Record: 3-9, Streak Lose 7) 4. Stony Brook (Record: 4-9, Streak: Win 1) 5. Hofstra (Record: 3-10, Streak: Lose 3) 6. Manhattan (Record: 3-9, Streak: Lose 1) Breaking It Down: I...

Week 3 College Power Rankings

It felt good to be back in the trenches this weekend. On Saturday I was at the ice bowl between Adelphi and Franklin Pierce and yesterday New York Tech vs Southern New Hampshire. This week, it will get more exciting as teams begin to play midweek games. Here’s my best stab at how the local teams line up. Division-I Fordham (Record: 5-6, Trending Up) 2. Hofstra (Record: 3-7, Trending Up) 3. St. John’s (Record: 3-6, Trending Down) 4. Stony Brook (Record: 2-8, Trending Even) 5. LIU (Record: 2-6, Trending Even) Breaking It Down: Simply put, it’s been a rough start for all of these teams but Fordham is playing the best right now. They are riding the high of a four-game win streak following a perfect week against Sacred Heart and a weekend sweep of Furman. On Sunday, they put a...

College Power Rankings: Week 11

We are on the cusp of May which means one thing; throw out all the chatter and rankings and see how the teams perform in crunch time. This week we covered LIU Post-NYIT which was (hopefully) a prelude to an outstanding ECC tournament in two weeks. NYIT was able to defeat a dominant pitcher in James Varela, but LIU Post showed their resiliency with a win in Game 2. The double header on Sunday was postponed so we will have to wait until later today and Wednesday to see how the series plays out. As far as the rest of the local teams, let’s take a look: Division-I: St. John’s (Record; 23-16, Last Week: 1-3) 2. Stony Brook (Record: 24-15, Last Week: 2-3) 3. Fordham (Record: 26-20, Last Week: 3-2) 4. Hofstra (Record: 13-26, Last Week: 2-2) Analysis: I was going to keep Stony Brook at...

Power Rankings: Week 10

We are really getting to the home stretch now as we approach the final days of April. There’s just one month until conference playoffs for Division-I, three weeks until Division-II and two weeks until Division-III. The top teams have solidified themselves with strong play over the past several weeks, but the postseason is where they must continue to peform. How how they stack up: Division-I: 1.Stony Brook (Record: 22-12, Past Week: 2-1) 2. St. John’s (Record: 22-14, Past Week: 3-1) 3. Fordham (Record: 23-18, Past Week: 1-3) 4. Hofstra (Record: 11-24, Past Week: 4-0) Analysis: I was at Stony Brook’s double header on Friday against Albany, it was a crucial series win against an America East rival. After getting out to an early 4-0, they nearly watched their lead slip away w...

Power Rankings: Week 9

As we get into the middle of April, we are seeing the cream rise to the top, but in general the quality of play has been terrific. At the Division-III level, we have all five teams at .500 or greater, which bodes for a thrilling first weekend of May. Let’s jump into this week’s rankings… Division-I: St. John’s (Record: 19-12, Past Week: 3-2) 2. Stony Brook (Record: 20-11, Past Week: 4-1) 3. Fordham (Record: 22-15, Past Week: 2-3) 4. Hofstra (Record: 7-24, Past Week: 2-3) Analysis: Tremendous show of resiliency for the Red Storm winning a 14-inning and an 11-inning marathon this weekend against Xavier, that is extremely telling about the team’s character. Stony Brook had the best week of any of these four teams with four wins in five games. Bret Clarke improved...

Power Rankings: Week 8

I am honestly thrilled to see the recent run of success of the local teams. Besides the obvious enhanced interest in the coverage, it is great for the local baseball community to have such a good product at all the Long Island universities. It gives top high school players more reason to stay home, which results in having a stronger overall caliber of play. Once again, the rankings were very difficult this week. As you can see by the records, almost all of the teams are above .500, so I decided to add their records this week because trends is really the only way to separate some of these teams. For example, Old Westbury is coming off a huge week which isn’t obvious when looking at their overall record but only when you look at where they were last week at this time. The college playo...

College Power Rankings: Week 5

This week we covered Stony Brook, LIU Post and Molloy, so I’ve almost gotten to see all of the local teams. Right now, the most compelling Division might be Division-II with four of the five teams are over .500. It makes this list more intriguing when the teams are competitive. Here’s my best attempt to rank the locals: Division-I: Fordham (Record: 11-9, Trending EVEN) It was not a great week for them in Maryland, but they retain their top spot for another week because of the six-game win streak leading up to that. Jake MacKenzie is leading the team in hitting by far; .360 AVG with 27 hits already. The 3.47 ERA has certainly kept them winning ballgames. They will face Manhattan for one and St. Bonaventure for three this weekend. 2. Stony Brook (Record: 7-7. Trending UP) Where w...

Power Rankings: Week 4

Weather once again caused some havoc on the schedules this week; aside from the teams that were able to escape down south. Fortunately, we were able to cover a few games finally and they happened to be pretty great match ups. The only local team yet to play a game is St. Joseph’s, who will open on Tuesday against Lehman so we will omit them from the list because I don’t have a read on them yet. Without further ado, here’s my best guess with how the local Division-I, Division-II and Division-III teams stack up. Here’s last week’s edition if you’d like to compare. Division-I: Fordham (Record: 9-6) They are red-hot right now, and if you take away their opening weekend against a national powerhouse in Texas A & M, they would be 9-3. In any event, they ar...

Power Rankings: Week 3

This was a very frustrating weekend because so many games were wiped out. With the storm that hit last night into this morning, this very likely that any game that was scheduled to be played early this week–such as NYIT vs Adelphi will now be cancelled. The silver lining is that with Spring Break coming up, many teams will be able to get 5-7 games in this week. Like last week, there’s no reason yet for the Division-III Power Rankings since Farmingdale and St. Joseph’s haven’t played a game yet and Old Westbury has only played two games. Division-I: Fordham (Record: 5-6) It was a great weekend for the Rams as they won three of four against Maryland Eastern Shore. In the first game, a familiar face Jake Guercio (West Islip 2018) had a three-hit day. The combination of...
