Rocky Point knew that they had the chance to have a special season in 2022. “After the first round exit, we knew we would be returning the same team – minus James Maggio, who is doing great for St. Joseph’s.  We knew we had the team that could be the last team standing.” It’s not often a team has the star power that the Rocky Point Eagles had. They didn’t just have “D-I commits”, they had ...

Ken Kortright Agency Game of the Week: Nic Benhardt Puts Out Fire in 2-1 Win

Postgame interview with Rocky Point HC Anthony Anzalone following their season opening 2-1 victory over East Islip pic.twitter.com/iASJHbpzTa — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) March 30, 2022 This was a game that I had circled on the calendar. The reigning Conference IV Long Island Champs on the road against one of the most talented teams in Suffolk. Both teams sending their hard-throwing southpaw ace to the hill. Rocky Point came out on top, 2-1, in our Ken Kortright Agency Game of the Week led by their four Preseason All-Long Island Players. While baseball is a team sport, and Rocky Point certainly has talent all over the field, it doesn’t hurt to have four Division-I commits that all have varsity experience. Carbone, the reigning League MVP squared off against Stony Brook-comm...

Rocky Point Looks Poised to Make a Run at County Title

by Mike Anderson Final: Rocky Point 4, Hills West 2 WP: Dominick Carbone S: Cody Miller Carbone: 3-for-4, 2 RBI Rocky Point improves to 12-1 pic.twitter.com/dwyolLkHjx — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) June 2, 2021 It’s hard to improve on a 16-2 record, but that’s what Rocky Point Varsity Baseball will look to do this year. And when you have a team as talented and as deep as Rocky Point, that is very possible.  Though they were upset in the playoffs and eliminated by Harborfields, the Eagles had themselves a great year. Rocky Point was the top seed in League IV last year, and their 16 wins tied them for the most in Section XI along with Mt. Sinai, who was the top seed in League V. What made their season all the more impressive was the competition that they faced: six of their nine opp...

What Are the Best Tools on the Island?

Baseball loves to talk about “toolsy” players. What does this mean? Well the five-tools are to hit, hit with power, run, field and throw. Players that have all five are said to be “five-tool players”. Very few of these exist in the game of baseball let alone on Long Island. So rather than trying to make a phony list of five-pool players on Long Island, let’s break the tools down. And we can even add pitchers for fun. Here’s what I got. This is based off my observations. Dominick Carbone Strikes Out 9, Drives in Two En Route to 4-2 Rocky Point Win

Final: Rocky Point 4, Hills West 2 WP: Dominick Carbone S: Cody Miller Carbone: 3-for-4, 2 RBI Rocky Point improves to 12-1 pic.twitter.com/dwyolLkHjx — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) June 2, 2021 Back in 2018, Rocky Point captured their first Class A County Championship in program history. A large part of that team was LHP/OF Joey Grillo who was among the top players on Long Island that season both at the plate and on the mound. Three years later, and it’s another southpaw pitcher and lefty bat that is performing exceptionally well for the Eagles except he’s just a sophomore – which makes it even more impressive. He’s batting .510 for the season – fired a no-hitter against East Hampton last week and followed that up with a great outing today against Hil...

Rocky Point Leaning on Deep Pitching Staff, Two Div-I Prospects

Walk-off single by Kyle Callahan and Rocky Point defeats Shoreham-Wading River, 4-3, in 10 innings ! pic.twitter.com/520eBR5wGZ — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 23, 2019 Rocky Point won the first County Championship in program history in 2018, and came very close to winning another in 2019 with a new Head Coach and only 13 players on the roster. That’s a testament to the culture that former coach Andrew Aschettino instilled, but also the caliber of coach that Anthony Anzalone is. Anzalone, who was an outstanding hitter in his own right at Rocky Point and Adelphi University, will guide a team in 2021 that has a ton of promise. While they graduated a big senior class in 2019 – headlined by League MVP Mike Gunning – they only had two seniors graduate in 2020, neith...

Rocky Point Looking to Return To the Class A Finals With a Young Core

by Zevan Shuster As Rocky Point baseball looks ahead to its 2020 season, one thing is on its mind: redemption.  “Coming off a championship loss last year, we brought some returners back. And that left a sour taste in their mouth,” head coach Anthony Anzalone said.  “They got a chance at a decent amount of success last year, especially the younger guys. I think those guys that are returning are definitely hungry to make it to that point again,” said Anzalone.  Unequivocally, the goal for this season is to get back to the championship game, and to finish the job this season. Whatever motivation lingers from last season’s painful defeat may certainly help this year, but when it comes to on the field, they likely will have to grind to return to the Class A Finals. “We do have a pretty young te...
