The Firebird’s relentless offense stopped the game in the bottom of the sixth with the mercy rule in effect. Catcher Jimmy Ernst propelled Kellenberg from behind the plate and from the batter’s box going 3-4 with four RBIs in the game. “Everything was working,” Ernst said. “The Pitchers were hot and the bats were hot. We put the ball over the plate and hit the ball to move guys over.” Even though Kellenberg would get t...
by Max Edelman FINAL: @CHSFlyersBall 2 – @SAFriarsBase 1 John Carroll finishes off a complete game, in which he struck out nine. The Flyers hold off a late Friars surge to open their season with a win. pic.twitter.com/vqAKeEUyil — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) March 26, 2024 On a day where all seven Catholic League teams played at the Moriches Sports Complex to celebrate the beginning of a new season, the Chaminade Flyers defeated the St. Anthony’s Friars 2-1. Entering the top of the seventh and final inning up 2-0, Chaminade starting pitcher John Carroll needed only three outs to give the Flyers the win, and his first complete game shutout of the season. However, that’s where things got dicey. The top half of the seventh began with Carroll getting sophomore CJ Alfano to hit ...
Special thanks to Metamorphosis Landscape Design for sponsoring this year’s season preview series. A playoff no-hitter ! Chaminade 1, St. Dominic 0 WP: John Carroll (6.2 IP, 0 H, 2 BB, 0 R) S: James D’Alessandro (.1 IP) Chaminade will face Holy Trinity tomorrow at 4pm in the winner’s bracket pic.twitter.com/93SKLSAU4r — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 21, 2023 For the first time since 2018, a team other than Chaminade captured the Catholic League Championship. The Flyers’ had their impressive streak end by Holy Trinity – although they did not go down quietly. They were in the Finals, but ultimately lost the best-of-three series at Hofstra University. Longtime head coach Mike Pienkos, who has 669 career wins and 20 NSCHSAA Championships, stated the following: R...
For the first time since 2012, Holy Trinity captures the Catholic League Championship! They shut out the 3-time reigning Champs, Chaminade, by the score of 6-0 pic.twitter.com/I13SK0h8oI — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 30, 2023 Climbing Mount Chaminade in late May is no small task. The monsters of the Catholic League have won 20 titles including the last three seasons. They’ve made a habit of winning championships and until proven otherwise, it was not smart to pick anyone else to win it all. With that being said, Holy Trinity has spent the past couple seasons building to this point where they could field a team with not only the talent but the experience to compete with the Flyers. In 2021, they won 2 games. Last season, they made a significant jump but fell short of the ...

At the high school level, some are only five innings in run-rule games. Some include a bevy of walks, hit batters and errors that don’t resemble anything like a no-hitter. This one certainly didn’t feature any of that. It’s not often there’s a playoff no-hitter – especially in the Catholic League – which features the best collection of talent on Long Island. Chaminade, the 3-time reigning champs that have somehow been overlooked in 2023, reminded ev...
Final: St. Dominic 10, Chaminade 1 WP: Victor Frederick Frederick also hit a 3-R HR pic.twitter.com/uHl1vHvaD6 — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) April 18, 2023 For a team looking to establish themselves as a championship contender, there is no bigger moment than facing the reigning New York State champs. Chaminade is the three-time reigning Catholic League champs and coming off one of the most dominant seasons in Long Island history. St. Dominic, a team loaded with talent and looking for their first championship since 2009, had this one circled on the calendar for sure. The Bayhawks sent ace and St. John’s-commit Victor Frederick to the mound and he was up to the task. Frederick was extremely effective and efficient as he cruised through a Flyers lineup that features five Divisi...

While nobody enjoys time away from the diamond, it is necessary in order for players to rest their arms and prepare for the next season. Now that the calendar has turned to January, all eyes are on the 2023 season. From a personal standpoint, I will be watching from a distance for at least some of the season as my daughter was born last week and I would like to spend some time at home. Our reporter, Nick Cipolla, will be stepping up in the interim to be our go-to guy in terms of game coverage. I will be back, though, this is my passion after all. Here’s some of the top storylines heading into the season. What can Frank Catalanotto do for an encore? The 2022 Axcess Baseball College Coach of the Year took over the Hofstra program in July 2021 and in short order turned them into a champ...
