Coming Off Best Season in Program History, Sayville Motivated to Stay on Top

No town has been flying as high as Sayville since November 2019 when they captured the Suffolk County Class III championship with a 28-10 victory over East Islip. The football team followed that up by winning another title last week – this time against Westhampton Beach, 32-7. Sandwiched between those was the first Long Island Championship in school history on the diamond with a thrilling 1-0 victory over Clarke. By now, you’ve surely seen the video that has gone viral. Pat Delaney’s RBI Double In 8th Delivers 5-2 Victory For Sayville

Sayville made a habit out of performing their best with their backs against the wall in 2019 and rode a hot streak all the way to winning their first Class A Long Island Championship in school history. Although this was a far cry from the intensity in that victory against Clarke, they displayed their resiliency under coach Joe Esposito. With the score tied 2-2 entering extra innings in the Town of Brookhaven Varsity Wood Bat tournament, Pat Delaney drove in Nick Buffardi with an RBI double to give the Golden Flashes a 3-2 lead. They padded their lead with two insurance runs on RBI singles by Jack Leniec and C.J. Messina to make it 5-2, which was the final against Half Hollow Hills West. Kevin Gross closed the deal, he recorded the victory after coming on in relief in the fifth inning. The ...

Who Were The Favorites For The Paul Gibson Award?

Sports fans and media love playing the what if game. Growing up a die-hard baseball fan, I always wondered what if Jeffrey Maier doesn’t reach over the outfield fence and catapult the Yankees dynasty? What if Barry Bonds doesn’t feel slighted by the media coverage Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa received in 1998 and decides it’s not worth it to take steroids? And what happens if Duaner Sanchez decides not to take a cab at 2 am causing him to miss the rest of the season and the Mets make the World Series in 2006? This year we are playing a different type of what if game What if the season started on time and continued unimpeded through May? Let’s start with the Paul Gibson Award, which is given to the top pitcher in Suffolk County. Last year it was won by Joe Savino of C...

The Biggest Stories of 2019

Without a doubt, the most thrilling part of my job is watching the exciting moments in championship games. This list will rank those moments by the gravity of their significance. This honestly was the best year since I’ve been doing this when you consider the national impact of some of the stories. Admittedly, this is a subjective list that can go in any direction but here it goes: 5) Stony Brook Pulls Off Comeback to Capture America East  Under Head Coach Matt Senk, Stony Brook went from anonymity to the national spotlight. While they didn’t make it to Omaha this season, they had another memorable season. They captured their fourth America East Championship of the decade (2010, 2012, 2015, 2019) with a thrilling comeback against Binghamton. They trailed 5-2 in the fourth innin...

Are Hitters Making A Comeback on Long Island?

Steven Matz. Marcus Stroman. Nick Tropeano. Anthony Kay. Joe Palumbo. Kevin McCarthy. Kyle McGowin. Those are the Long Island natives that are in the Major Leagues right now. They are all pitchers. In fact, it’s been 10 years since a position player from Long Island has played in the big leagues and that was Reid Gorecki (Kellenberg) with the Atlanta Braves in 2009. Fourteen of the past 15 players have been pitchers. That’s a trend that says our bats are lagging behind our arms. It makes sense in theory–our pitchers have fresh arms as they only play outdoors from March to October. This works in their favor. Our hitters, though, have limited reps while their counterparts in California, Texas, Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas can get at bats 12 months out of the year. Alt...

Recap of Day 1 of the New York State Championship

Yesterday, four Long Island teams made the five (ish) hour trek up north to Binghamton to participate in the New York State tournament. The four teams (Massapequa, Sayville, Center Moriches and Pierson) qualified by capturing the Long Island (southeast regional) Championship and advancing in hopes of being crowned the best in the state among their classification. For Massapequa and Center Moriches, they were both looking to repeat as champions, while Sayville is already in unprecedented territory, winning their first Long Island Championship in program history last week. Here’s a quick recap of how it went down: Class AA: Massapequa vs Shenendehowa The teams traded zeros through three innings, but Shenendehowa broke through with a four-run fourth inning against Chiefs’ RHP Bobb...

Right off the bat, it looked to be a pitchers’ duel, with Rob Milopsky getting the start for Rocky Point, facing off against Brock Murtha for Sayville. It certainly lived up to expectations, as the game required extra innings, with both starters each only allowing one run through the first  seven innings. The hard throwing right handers traded zeroes for the first three innings, with Murtha particularly dominant, recording six strikeouts and only allowing one hit the first time through the order. He also contributed at the plate, leading off the top of the fourth ...

Sayville Rallies to Stay Alive Against Hauppauge

by James Ryder Playoff Baseball is all of the usual unpredictability with higher tensions and stakes added on top. Few games make this concept clearer than Sunday’s playoff matchup between the Sayville Golden Flashes and the Hauppauge Eagles. A thrilling pitching duel that saw a complete game win and a few other crazy moments led to a Sayville victory, 4-2. Hofstra-commit Ryan Levenberg took the mound for the Eagles and opened the game with two strikeouts. In the bottom of the first inning, Eric Foster allowed the only two runs of the day for the Eagles. Hauppauge got on base thanks to a walk from Anthony Ferrara followed by a first pitch single by Mike Knopf. The DH Joe Ferreri then hit a single up the middle to score Ferrara. Knopf and Ferreri would then steal second and third base, allo...
