Players to Watch in the LICBL

This week kicked off the regular season for the Long Island Collegiate Baseball League (LICBL). Most teams have played five or six game to this point and the top players are beginning to emerge. For our audience that has been following us from last year, there are many familiar names that populate the local Long Island and city colleges. Below is a breakdown of players to keep an eye on through out the season: Position Players: Hermes Abreu-New York Redbirds (Concordia) Noah Centeno-Long Island Lightning (Sacred Heart) A.J. Cain- Long Island Lightning (New Haven) Andrew Florides- Long Island Lightning (NYIT) Brian Forbes- Diamond Spikes (Herkimer CC) Noah Fortuna-New York Hurricanes (New Haven) Brian Goulard-Long Island Storm (Fordham University) Gannon Kenney-McGowan- New York Cardinals (...

Massapequa Edges Oceanside In Crucial Game One Victory

Year in year out, when Massapequa plays Oceanside in playoffs it’s never as good as advertised, it’s better. On Saturday afternoon, Massapequa squeaked by Oceanside by a score of 6-5 to capture the game one victory. They’re now one win away from repeating as county champions in consecutive years. Earlier in the season when these two teams played, Oceanside flat out embarrassed Massapequa in game one of the series as they won by a score of 13-0. However, this wasn’t the case yesterday. Oceanside jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning courtesy of a Leo Alvarez RBI. He finished the day cashing in all 5 RBI for Oceanside. In the first inning, it seemed as if Brendan McFall was going to shut out Massapequa once again, as he struck out the first three batters...

Oceanside Remains Undefeated With Statement Victory

Final: Oceanside 13, Massapequa 0 WP: Brendan McFall (CG, 2 hits, 6 K) Dylan Judd: 3-R HR McFall is our @DigmiNation player of the Game #TipYourCap #LiveDreamBe pic.twitter.com/VJBRrugd5r — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) April 17, 2018 If today was a test for Oceanside, they got an A+. The undefeated Sailors entered play with a perfect 7-0 record, but were facing their biggest challenge yet–facing the reigning Class AA Long Island Champion Massapequa Chiefs. The Sailors dominated in all facets of the game; cruising to a 13-0 victory with the exclamation mark coming in the top of the seventh inning on a long three-run HR by UMASS-Amherst commit Dylan Judd. The game was long over by that point, as the Sailors offense scored early-and-often against Chiefs’ RHP Christian...

Oceanside Season Preview

Typically when a team starts four sophomores in any given year, it’s rebuilding year. Especially when there’s only three seniors, as Oceanside had in 2017. That was not the case, as shown by their 17-5-1 record. What was the secret? Those four sophomores all stepped up to the challenge and performed exceptionally well. First baseman Chris Siklas (.353 AVG), OF Leo Alvarez (.365 AVG), 3B Austin Vlahakis (.321 AVG) and 2B Jake Lazzaro (.305 AVG) were all major contributors as opposed to inexperienced sophomores. Lazzaro, also an All-County WR on the football team, played so well he received an athletic scholarship from St. John’s on the basis of his incredible series against Massapequa. Head Coach Mike Postillo called him “lightning fast” and he will slide over ...

Long Islanders Shine In PBR’s New York Games

This year was the third annual New York Games hosted by Prep Baseball Report. It was held at three locations including Maine-Endwell HS, Union-Endicott HS and Binghamton University. I was at the latter on Monday and Tuesday, and was fortunate to see some of the top high school players from Long Island. Below are my thoughts on each of the players that performed well. Dylan Judd (Oceanside ’18) Judd is a very underrated player but he is not a secret. He is a well-built prospect with a 6’1″ 190 lb frame. He has a 1.9 pop time and an exit velocity approaching 90 MPH. He has a short, compact swing. Very impressive player that has proven to be a winner. Brendan McFall (Oceanside ’18) McFall had a terrific 2017 season for the Sailors. He was named aXcess Conference AA-I M...

Who are the Top Uncommitted Class of 2018 Prospects?

We are about to enter the portion of the year when the top players entering their senior years of high school will announce their verbal commitment to colleges–if they haven’t done so already. A handful of the Class of 2018s have already committed. Players like Mark Faello, Jason Coules, Matt Hogan, Anthony D’Onofrio, Logan Doran, Bobby Vath, Logan O’Hoppe, Liam Pulsipher, Anthony Fontana and Jake Guercio are already off the table. Here’s the best players still on the board. Joe Litchhult (Hills East LHP, 1B) The big left-handed pitcher had a phenomenal season for the League III Champs. He really showed what kind of pitcher he is. He throws in the low-to-mid 80s, he has very clean and repeatable mechanics and he has command of a changeup and breaking ball as w...

Nassau County Class AA Power Rankings (5th Edition)

Everything went as expected this past week in Class AA, causing only slight alterations in the rankings–basically the top teams stayed hot . With a week of little to no surprises at all, let’s take a look to see if there was any mix up in this week’s power rankings. 5. Calhoun (10-5) (Last week: 4) Non-league games often are a chance for coaches to get inexperienced players playing time and have some fun. However, when you lose a non-league game against a team that’s 2-13 on the season, there’s no excuse for losing. Calhoun lost to Bellmore JFK 5-3 during their bye week, which could result in negative momentum riding into their last week of the season. Sophmore Jake Edwards will look to continue to dominate at the plate this week against Valley Stream Central....
