Baseball Players React to the Passing of Yogi Berra

Legendary baseball player Yogi Berra passed away today at the age of 90. He played 18 of his 19 year career with the New York Yankees. During that time, he won 10 World Series and three MVPs while finishing in second place on two other occasions. Berra finished with a .285 career batting average with 358 home runs and 1430 RBI. He compiled a career OPS of .830. Just as famous as Yogi was on the field, he was possibly more famous for his “Yogi-isms”. Among his most notable quotes was “it ain’t over ’til it’s over”, “when you come to a fork in the road, take it,” and “90 percent of the game is half mental.” Here are some tweets from Long Island and notable baseball players expressing their sadness over the passing of a New Yor...

Marcus Stroman Makes Season Debut Tomorrow

It has been a long road back, but Marcus Stroman will finally make his season debut tomorrow afternoon in Yankee Stadium. It couldn’t come at a better time for the first place Toronto Blue Jays, who are looking to stave off the New York Yankees. The Pat-Med grad is coming off an 11-6 season with a 3.65 ERA over 130.2 IP in his rookie year. He compiled a 1.17 WHIP and struck out 7.6 per nine. He tore his ACL during Spring Training while attempting to avoid Josh Donaldson during PFPs and it was while accepted that he would miss the entire 2015 season. Thanks to his work ethic and the physical therapists at Duke University, he was able to recover much quicker than anticipated and he was able to make three minor league rehab starts. He will join a surprisingly strong rotation thanks to t...

Danny Burawa Recalled by Atlanta Braves, Throws Two Shutout Innings in Debut

Lost in the shuffle of the slew of Long Islanders making an impact in pro ball this season has been Danny Burawa. The Rocky Point grad, and former St. John’s closer, originally made his MLB debut with the New York Yankees this season on June 21 when he allowed four ER in 0.2 IP against the Detroit Tigers. On August 5, he was designated for assignment by the Yankees and scooped up by the Atlanta Braves. During his stint with the Triple-A affiliate Gwinnett Braves he threw 64.2 IP, struck out 57, walked 32, compiled a 2.64 ERA and 1.21 WHIP. He was promoted when the rosters expanded on September 1 and made his team debut that night against Miami. He struck out four in two shutout innings. In the ninth, he struck out Martin Prado, Justin Bour and Marcell Ozuna consecutively. Burawa has ...

Blue Jays Tentatively Map Out the Season Debut for Marcus Stroman

Blue Jays GM Alex Anthopoulos addressed the Toronto media today and announced the team has tentatively mapped out the rehab assignment, including the season debut for Marcus Stroman. After throwing his simulated game today, he will make a rehab assignment with Single-A Lansing on September 2 and then with Triple-A Buffalo on September 7. If all goes well, he will start against the New York Yankees in New York on September 12. That would be an incredibly anticipated season debut in front of his hometown fans and it will certainly carry playoff implications. He made three starts against the Yankees last year. His first came on June 17 against Masahiro Tanaka, in which he struggled through 3.2 innings, allowing two ER and throwing 98 pitches. He responded with a stellar 8 inning outing, allow...

Nick Tropeano Recalled, Will Start Tomorrow Against Chicago

[mlbvideo id=”86594183″ width=”400″ height=”224″ /] The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim did not think they had any rotational needs. That was until recently when C.J. Wilson suffered a torn UCL that required season-ending ligament replacement surgery and Matt Shoemaker being demoted to Triple-A for ineffectiveness. Fortunately, they had a big league caliber starter, Nick Tropeano, waiting in the wings for the Salt Lake Bees. The West Islip grad and Stony Brook star has made two starts in the big leagues this season, April 23rd in which he received the win and July 24 when he received the loss. This time around, it figures to be for a longer stint. Tropeano believes that to be the case. “Yeah, I feel like last year having that small stint in the major...

Bradley Camarda Commits to Hofstra

It was a typically cold Spring day on March 31 and when you factor in playing on the frigid east end and against the reigning Long Island Champions in West Islip, it was going to be a tough task for any pitcher. Half Hollow Hills West was faced with replacing Aaron Glickstein, their ace coming off a 10-0 season and with the ink barely dried on his letter of intent to Stony Brook, who had recently gotten Tommy John surgery. His replacement was sophomore Bradley Camarda. Unfazed, even with Newsday and Baseball on the Island in the stands, the young right hander went out and delivered a remarkable outing, forcing his way into the conversation of top pitchers on the island. That outing put his name on the map and he proceeded to win four games for his team, who went 15-5 but had their season c...

Travis Jankowski Promoted to the Big Leagues by San Diego Padres

It became official during a press conference by San Diego Padres GM, and Huntington native, A.J. Preller that the club would be promoting Triple-A outfielder, and former Stony Brook star, Travis Jankowski. The Lancaster, PA native was tearing the cover off the ball in the minor leagues, .335/.413/.425, between Double and Triple-A, and his play could not be ignored. The Padres had a glut of outfielders but dealt Will Venable to the Texas Rangers and, all of a sudden, a spot opened up. Jankowski is known for his tremendous hitting ability and speed. Prior to his professional days, he made a name for himself in the Cape Cod league during the summer of 2011 and proceeded to dominate the America East in 2012 by leading the Sea Wolves to the College World Series and smashing a program-record 110...
