OTD: Newfield Ends Postseason Drought Behind Kyle Johnson’s Gem

Our @DigmiNation Player of the Game is winning pitcher Kyle Johnson. He allowed only two hits and struck out 5 batters #TipYourCap pic.twitter.com/tPdfnquykC — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) April 20, 2018 In 2005, Kyle Johnson was five-years-old. That was the last time the Newfield Wolverines competed in a playoff game. Today, the Stony Brook-commit pitched like he has been waiting 13 years to make the playoffs. The past two years were fresh in their memory all winter as they came just one win away from a postseason berth in ’16 and two wins last season. In 2018, however, they won the necessary 10 games within the first 11 games. “It feels awesome,” he said following the game. “We are going to enjoy this today–it’s been 13 years–but tomorrow we get right back to work and get ready f...

Bobby Vath Fires A No-Hitter, Brian Morrell Hits 2-R Walk-Off HR

by Chris Sacchi In a 2-0 walkoff @RHTomcats victory over the Shelter Island Bucks in the @HamptonsLeague, Bobby Vath earns the postgame interview by firing a no hitter in the W. He talks to @SachChristopher about the no-no and the game plan that went into it, presented by @hamptoncoffee pic.twitter.com/fYpfaOIVdb — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) July 8, 2019 In the words of the late Great Hall of Fame player Ernie Banks, “let’s play two!” The Riverhead Tomcats and Shelter Island Bucks did just that, and one player put himself in the history books.  Game one featured a pair of right hand starters that absolutely controlled the game. Bobby Vath took the mound for Riverhead, and Quinten Cooleen started opposite him for Shelter Island.  Vath, who is set to transfer from University of ...

Joey Savino Twirls a 2-Hit Shutout over Newfield

Our @DigmiNation Player of the Game is Joey Savino who fired a 2-hit shutout over Newfield in a 3-0 victory. He needed only 75 pitches. They will face Bay Shore tomorrow #TipYourCap pic.twitter.com/kTvsHkthLo — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 14, 2018 Newfield had a 15-win regular season but ran into a buzzsaw today and it was junior RHP Joey Savino. The hard-throwing 6’3″ RHP was lights-out from the first pitch of the game until his 75th and final pitch of the game. He allowed just a single in the second and another in the sixth as No. 9 Connetquot advances in the winner’s bracket over No. 8 Newfield. Savino said it “felt great” but deferred praise to his teammates noting the “defense was awesome and the hitting was awesome,” adding that ...

Insider Notes: September 4th

Today Newfield hosted Ward Melville in a scrimmage. The game featured several high-end players which is why I was in attendance. Below are my takeaways from the game: Rhode Island-commit Bobby Vath started the game for Newfield and he went four innings. He was very impressive. I first watched him at a showcase two years ago. He’s improved his velocity substantially since that time. He now works in the 87-88 MPH range with his fastball. He is a Div-I pitcher in every sense. He has terrific command of his fastball and throws a sweeping 11-5 breaking ball that he commands as well. Aside from hitting the first batter of the game on his curve, he displayed very good command. His coach was very pleased with his performance, he fanned the second batter on a high fastball. It really showed h...

All-Around Effort By Rocky Point Propels Them Past Newfield

As the clouds parted to make way for a beautiful day at Bethpage Ballpark, Rocky Point took the field against Newfield for a non-league match up. Rocky Point was carried to a 10-3 win by the arms of James Weisman and Colin Brodsky, who allowed just three hits between them, and a strong offensive outing–particularly from the middle of the line up. Not only did Weisman get the win, he drove in the first run of the game on what appeared to be a triple, however on appeal he neglected to touch first on his way around the bases and was called out. Weisman worked well with the lead, walks got him into a couple of jams, but he didn’t allow a hit until the fourth inning. Rocky Point took a 1-0 lead into the third when they began to open the game up. First baseman Brian Forbes drove in t...

Newfield Ready to Turn the Corner

Second-year Head Coach Eric Joyner knows a thing or two about instilling winning mentalities in his teams. He was a part of two Long Island Championships with Newfield football while a member of the coaching staff. Now having dedicating himself fully to his baseball duties, he sees a difference in how his players are going about their business. “It’s starting to take hold,” he said referring to his coaching philosophies. “We require a lot of the guys, from the weight room to conditioning and batting practice in the offseason–and it’s still a work in progress but they’re coming down here to work,” he added. The Wolverines will be looking to avenge the bitter end to the 2016 in which he needed to win one of their final two games against Smithto...
