He fired 71 innings, he notched a stellar 1.57 ERA and struck out an incredible 108 batters while yielding just 36 hits – just over 4.5 per 9 innings. He has yet to pitch in a varsity game, but that is not unusual in this era. He will certainly be a player to watch over the next two season as the Chaminade Flyers attempt to regain their status as the premier Cathol...

At Baseball Heaven, the Titans took on the Beast in a Championship game under the bright lights in Yapank. Matt Canizares got the start for the Beast. Matt had his velocity up early and was looking very good throughout his start. The Titans struck first when Colin Ross drove home the game’s first run with an RBI groundout to get the Titans up early. St. John’s-commit Kyle Chase was the starter for the Titans and he also on his game. Kyle touched 89 mph in the firs...

Chandler Giovinco On The Road to Recovery

Typically a Tommy John surgery takes 45 minutes to an hour, depending on the severity. When it takes three hours, you know there’s a problem. Chandler Giovinco, a 2019 graduate of Newfield HS, was pitching outside for the first time last season in a non-league game against League I playoff-contender Longwood. He was excited and feeling strong as he finished his warmup. Five pitches into the game, that changed. “I felt it and I heard it,” said Giovinco in regards to the injury he sustained. “I thought I just cracked it so I kept throwing. Five pitches later I looked at my coach and said ‘I’m done.” In that moment, he feared the worst. “My baseball career is over – I thought to myself,” he said. “Then I thought maybe I can hit...

Up Next Powered by The Yard Sports Academy: Charles West

(This is the sixth installment of our popular ‘Up Next’ Series in which we spotlight the next wave of superstars on Long Island. Previously, we have featured Jayden Stroman, Liam Stemmler, Paul Napolitano , Sadier Vicioso and Matt Gileno. None of these players have appeared in a varsity game, but we are confident that they will soon. The series is Powered by The Yard Sports Academy, which you can check out here.) Charles West, aptly named for a left-handed pitcher, didn’t waste his time this summer facing competition that would be helpless against him. He chose to go the more challenging route–pitching a year up–against competition that would provide more of a challenge. The end result was that they weren’t very successful either–as the 14-year-old...

Prospect Sports and Performance Factory Merge: What It Means for Long Island Baseball

Over the past 12 years, Joe Francisco has owned and operated Performance Factory in Farmingdale. He has taught several of the top players in the area and has been successful. Still he felt something was missing in his academy. “For years, I’ve been trying to add a pitching coach,” said Francisco. “I haven’t found anyone that could rival our hitting program, to be honest.” That changed when Jim Clark introduced him to Bobby DeMichael. DeMichael and his father, Artie, purchased Prospect Sports in May and immediately turned it into a high-octane academy for both baseball and softball teams. One of their priorities was to revolutionize pitching lessons by incorporating a year-round classroom atmosphere with the data-driven technology introduced by Drive Line...
