by Tony Genualdo Bayport-Blue Point has had a ton of success in the last decade. The accolades include two New York State Class A titles and a 27-0 season. Last year was another postseason berth. Coming out of an outbracket game and going on to knock off the top seed, Miller Place, in the tournament. They ultimately finished with a record of 15-9, but lost to the eventual champs in Sayville. As for this year, Coach Jim Moccio is looking to keep the success going. And that starts with the offseason preparation. “Preparation has been the same as what we’ve done in previous years,” Moccio said. “We have a style of play that we try to reinforce in the winter months and try to peak around the postseason.” The seniors returning have quite the resume. When it comes to being considered the best–the bar is set high. Over the course of the past 10 seasons, there have been undefeated seasons, there have been back-to-back state champs, there have been pitching staffs loaded with Division-I talent and pro pitchers. But there can only be one team considered the best. I have watched a lot of baseball, but I didn’t trust my own instinct so I solicited the help of some trusted sources to put together my definitive list of the best teams of the decade. To make it a bit easier, we narrowed it down to teams that have won a Long Island Championship, because plenty of talented teams have made it to the finish line only to come up short. Last week we highlighted Jayden Stroman, which you can read here. The series is powered by The Yard Sports Academy, you can check them out here.) How does a small school like Bayport-Blue Point rattle of a stretch of 22 consecutive seasons of making the postseason even in a big lacrosse community? Aside from having a coach like Jim Moccio at the helm, they also...
(Today was our Game of the Week Presented by Muddy Locker Sports. Please check them out by clicking here.) In his first outing of the year, Kevin Hahn could not have looked more comfortable, even in moments of discomfort. The senior right-hander took a line drive off his body and calmly picked the ball up and fired to first for an out in the fifth inning. He allowed only two hits and one walk in total and retired the last seven hitters to face him to complete the 1-0 shutout for the Bayport-Blue Point Phantoms over Mount Sinai. It was one of those games that moved quickly and if you stepped aside for a few moments you likely missed a couple innings. Both Hahn and T.J. DeGennero, the starter for Mount Sinai, were terrific in this game. They both cruised through the first inning without inci...
