Final: Sayville 7, Bayport-Blue Point 3 WP: Brock Murtha (6 IP, 1 R, 6 K) pic.twitter.com/VvzOh6BCLv — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) March 27, 2018 Even when he doesn’t have his best stuff, Brock Murtha can find a way. On the home opener on a chilly afternoon against a playoff team, the reigning League 6 MVP and Notre Dame-commit put together a solid line of 6 IP, 1 R, 6 K, 2 H, 4 BB but he did benefit from a huge outfield assist from left fielder Dom Prevosto who fired a strike to end a bases loaded threat in the fifth inning with Sayville up 5-1. “It was good to get our first win as a team,” said Murtha. “I mean, I didn’t have my best stuff and I struggled to the plate a little bit but I got some great teammates out here making plays, throwing gu...
Not many things can prevent Bayport-Blue Point from making deep postseason runs anymore. Case in point, in 2017 they entered the season with only one player (Jake Liberatore) that had logged any significant time at the varsity level. That didn’t prevent them from beginning the year 8-2 and making it to the Class A county finals against Shoreham-Wading River before they ran into Brian Morrell, who fired a two-hitter and hit a grand slam in the clinching game. Being that they were able to weather the inexperience of last year, they will now enjoy the benefits of returning the bulk of their starting lineup and pitching rotation. The only exception being Liberatore, who is currently at Stetson University. He batted .333 last season and was the starting SS and a big-game pitcher. M...
On this week’s podcast, special guest Sal Mignano joins host Vinny Messana to discuss the best teams in Class A Long Island history. Mignano retired second on the all-time Long Island wins list with 583, but has since been passed by Bob Ambrosini. He has seen plenty of the best teams, including some teams that he’s coached such as the Shoreham-Wading River Wildcats in 1987 that were crowned New York State Class A champs. He’s also coached against the back-to-back NYS Champs from Bayport-Blue Point in 2013-’14 and Islip 2007-’08. He also coached in the Long Island Championship against the dominant Division teams. He provides unique insight as someone that has experienced these powerhouses first hand.
by Julian Guevara For the first time since 2012, Shoreham-Wading River is Suffolk County Class A champs. Led by their ace and MLB draft hopeful Brian Morrell, they took down Bayport-Blue Point 8-1 for their 20th consecutive win. Morrell was a force to be reckoned with on the hill (complete game allowing one earned run, a couple of hits, four walks and 11 K’s) and at the plate where he set the down with a second inning grand slam, for his eighth HR of the season. “This is what we have all been looking forward to–all the way back in January at winter workouts, I told the guys that this is the goal for the season,” said SWR head coach Kevin Willi. “We took it game-by-game in the playoffs and really put ourselves in good position to win.” SWR was on base often and early, which has been p...
Head Coach Jim Moccio and the Bayport Blue-Point Phantoms are treading unfamiliar water this playoff season coming in as a seven seed. Despite their low-seeding, BBP has come out fighting in this tournament defeating the No. 2 seed Sayville , and now the No. 3 seed Rocky Point. Hard throwing RHP Josh Monturo went the distance for BBP with a complete game shutout recording seven strikeouts, one walk and five hits. He finished his day at the plate 1-for-3 with a walk and two RBIs. “At the plate I was just trying to attack fastballs; that’s what I’ve been doing all season and it has been working out well,” said BBP pitcher Monturo. “Staying calm is key, playoffs get a little hyped up so I just try to stay calm and make hard contact.” Rocky Point called upon their LHP Joey Grillo for this play...
