This season, the team is running with a smaller group after graduating 14 seniors last year. Head coach Chris Schiro is looking to get the team back in the playoffs in his third season managing Bay Shore.  “Last year we saw some growth from our younger players. We had some unfortunate injuries losing three pitchers early on and two key defensive/offensive pieces for several games later in the season,” Schiro tol...

Bay Shore Begins New Era Under Head Coach Christopher Schiro

By Michael Malaszczyk Coltrane Calloway fires a 4-hit shutout and Bay Shore advances to the Suffolk Conference II Finals with a 1-0 win over Connetquot ! pic.twitter.com/FryTZ6oBMO — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) June 16, 2021 Last season was a resounding success for Bay Shore, who took down a talented Connetquot team on the road before losing in the Conference II County Finals against Huntington. With that said, it is a new era for the Marauders, who not only graduated several impact players but also longtime head coach, Mike Herbst, retired following the season. He is replaced by Coach Christopher Schiro, who was happy to share his thoughts on the upcoming season in an interview with Axcess Baseball. “I would have loved the opportunity to be on board last year’s staff with t...

Coltrane Calloway Sends Bay Shore to Conference II Finals

The Marauders seem determined to fight to the bitter end – as they defeated Connetquot, 1-0, to advance to the Suffolk County Conference II Finals against Huntington on Friday. Ace Coltrane Calloway was lights-out, firing a 4-hit shutout against a tough Thunderbirds lineup. The pitching match up lived up to the hype. Connetquot sent ace LHP Sean Mileti to the hill against Calloway. The lone run that scored in the game came in the first in...

Will Deriso Ties It, Rocco Stola Wins It For Northport In 8-6 Thriller

Final (8 innings): Northport 8, Bay Shore 6 WP: Jason Schwartz Rocco Stola drove in the game winning runs with a 2-run double in the eighth pic.twitter.com/LWJKccIYXo — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 18, 2021 By the time Rocco Stola laced a two-run double to right center field to score the go-ahead runs for Northport, the first inning was nothing but a distant memory. We had already seen a game-tying, two-strike, go-ahead home run in the previous inning and a game-tying error in the previous half inning that briefly put a scare in the Tigers. Northport would go on to hold on, by the score of 8-6 over previously undefeated Bay Shore, to improve to 5-2 on the season. All told, it was an intense game between two outstanding ballclubs on Tuesday afternoon in Bay Shore. The Marauders ...

Mike Herbst Hoping His Final Season Will Be One to Remember

Mike Herbst wants to go out with a bang. The longtime Bay Shore head coach notified his athletic director today that 2021 would be his final season at the helm. He has been with the program since 2005 and the head coach since 2010. He stated that this is a special group and this is the one he wants to go out with. Last season had the makings of a deep postseason run as well. Their seniors included OF Ryan Brewer (Johns Hopkins), 6’4 Jayden Colon who opted to go into the military and LHP Ryan Smerechniak (Ithaca). Brewer hit .429 with 20 RBI, 12 runs scored and .571 OBP in 2019 and was set to bat in the middle of the order. All three of those players were difference makers and Herbst feels that they would’ve been a really special group. They wound up playing in the Boys of Summe...

Bay Shore Captures 2020 LI Boys of Summer Long Island Championship

Bay Shore defeats Plainedge, 4-0, to capture the @liboysofsummer Long Island Championship pic.twitter.com/ESy8KM6mtt — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) August 18, 2020 22 years ago, Mike Herbst was a part of possibly the most unlikely playoff run in Long Island history when his Longwood Lion team went from 9-9 to a New York State Class AA Championship. While this summer season is a far cry from the gauntlet of running the table in the Suffolk County Section XI postseason, it did resemble it in terms of the improbability of a championship run. After going 0-8 during the regular season of the LI Boys of Summer varsity division, his Bay Shore team caught fire and ultimately won four consecutive elimination games to win the truncated Long Island Championship. They completed the feat this a...

Bay Shore Captures 2020 Suffolk Varsity Division

Coach Mike Herbst on Ryan Smerechniak’s outing and the offense in the 5-4 victory pic.twitter.com/72U10dsIo4 — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) August 11, 2020 2020 took high school sports away from us, but thanks to the LI Boys of Summer, the class of 2020 was able to experience some semblance of closure to their varsity baseball careers. The Suffolk Varsity Division was put together featuring seven high school teams in (mostly) their entirety. With all teams making the playoffs, it did somewhat mitigate the impact of the 9 game regular season but still seeding does usually have value. Bay Shore flipped that narrative on its head by losing all eight of their regular season games before flipping a switch in the postseason and running the table in the three game playoff and defeat...

Chris Rouleau Fires 10-K, 4-Hit Shutout To Send Bay Shore to Finals

Final: Bay Shore 3, CHSAA East 0 WP: Chris Rouleau (CG, 4 hit, 1 BB, 10 K) The Marauders will advance to the finals tomorrow at PAL Complex 9 am pic.twitter.com/e7pbaX8tmn — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) August 10, 2020 Who needs a regular season anyway? Bay Shore, who went 0-8 during the regular season of the Suffolk Varsity division in the LI Boys of Summer, defeated Newfield and CHSAA East to advance to tomorrow’s finals against HDMH (Connetquot). Prior to the game, Coach Mike Herbst mentioned that they had a rough regular season, struggling to get their full roster to the games. I responded that he always finds a way to stay in the games regardless of the circumstances. They wound up doing more than simply staying in the game. The Marauders, comprised of Bay Shore’s ...

OTD: Five-Run Fourth Inning Propels Sachem North to 6-4 Win

Connor Piotrowski went five innings in the 6-4 victory for Sachem North and he is our @BsbLifestyle101 Player of the Game pic.twitter.com/G1xPZWEemK — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) April 17, 2019 As a senior on a young team, Connor Pietrowski knows his role is important as the ace and stopper of the team. He came up big today with five innings in Sachem North‘s 6-4 victory in a League II showdown against Bay Shore at Bethpage Ballpark. Joshuel Rodriguez countered him for Bay Shore and both pitchers were sharp through three innings, as the game was scoreless. The Marauders got on the board in the top of the fourth on two wild pitches to take a 2-0 lead, but the Arrows answered back with a huge fifth inning. Matt Ingraffia started things up with a lead off walk and advanced to third o...

Bay Shore Looks Like Playoff Team Entering 2020

Missing out on the playoffs is unfamiliar territory for Bay Shore, who has made a habit of overachieving and even pulling off playoff upsets, as they did twice in 2018 season. It wasn’t a rough year, but they did finish one win short of a postseason berth in the loaded League 2 led by Connetquot and Commack. This year’s team appears to be loaded with offensive firepower. “I think we have a heck of an outfield – one of the best around,” said head coach Mike Herbst. Leading the charge is Ryan Brewer. The Johns Hopkins-commit is coming off a huge season in which he batted .439 with 2 HR, 20 RBI, 12 runs scored, .571 OBP and .649 SLG. “He’s a heck of a hitter and he’s clutch – that’s always key. He’s going to hit fourth in the l...

Get to Know Coltrane Calloway

One of the top players in the 2021 class came off the board yesterday. Coltrane Calloway, a junior at Bay Shore HS, committed to Seton Hall University. For those who have been following us since the Baseball on the Island days, you may be familiar with Coltrane. It was September 2016 when we covered a Body Armor vs Team Beast game at Baseball Heaven. Calloway, then on Team Beast, was the best player on the field. It was on the small field, but he threw a complete game and hit a home run, providing a glimpse into his future. It was not far-fetched to say he looked like he would be a Division-I athlete even back then. I had a chance to speak with him, and here’s what he had to say.. Can you explain your experience with the college recruiting process and why you chose Seton Hall? Now th...
