Axcess Invitational Is Set For July 22-25

Last year, we hosted our first tournament and it was called the Axcess Invitational. It took place in late July at Moriches Complex and featured roughly 28 teams with the age groups ranging from 14-18u. I believe the event was a success, and decided to run it back for year 2. The response has been outstanding as we are nearly at capacity. What can teams expect? Well, for one it’s going to be good baseball. I think the teams involved are all deserving and have a chance to win. I’m also going to make sure that myself and my staff will be going around, taking videos, getting radar readings on the pitchers and making sure the games are getting coverage on our social media platforms. Additionally, if the NCAA allows it, we will have the college coaches in attendance. We are open to ...

Recap of Axcess Invitational

After four days of wall-to-wall baseball at Moriches Sports Complex, we were able to crown championships at the 14, 15, 16 and 17/18 age group. The winners were: 14U- KA Elite Junior Ducks  15U- Diamond Spikes 16U- Black Diamonds 17/18U- Junior Ducks It took several months of planning, but it was almost all derailed by the pandemic that delayed the start of the 2020 season until July 6. It was almost derailed again with a huge storm that swept through Long Island on Wednesday night and parts of Friday morning. For those that have followed Axcess Baseball for a few years, you know how a dark cloud hangs over at out events. It started in 2016 with Dowling College closing the day before the Battle of the Border. Later that year, had to cancel a Home Run Derby. Once again, the first Awards Ban...

Koustulias, Cucinella Power LI Elite to 6-1 Win

by James Ryder Final: LI Elite take W 6-1. Here is Mike Cucinella (3 RBI) and Nick Koustulias (complete game, 0 ER) on their teams early success at the plate and how their team felt in their first game of the day: pic.twitter.com/GHwToYN8y9 — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) July 24, 2020 Some heavy rain nearly put a damper on the Axcess Baseball Invitational at Moriches Complex Friday morning. It caused the 9 AM matchup between 15 U Long Island Elite and Freedom Baseball to play just 6 or the usual 7 innings. The rain, however, didn’t seem to be a factor for LI Elite, whose early offensive success and strong dominant pitching led to their 6-1 victory. The game began with LI at the plate. Leadoff hitter JD Decina drew a walk. He then stole second base before being driven in on Mike Cuc...

Q & A With Joey Pena

It’s hard to have a better collegiate career than Joey Pena. The Brooklyn native just wrapped up an outstanding 4-year career with the St. Thomas Aquinas Spartans, hitting .366 with 37 RBI and 50 runs scored this season. Joey was far from a singles-hitting shortstop. He had 26 extra base hits and stole 37 bases, while playing all 54 contests. Perhaps most impressive, he drew 45 walks and struck out only 14 times; which padded his OBP to a ridiculous .498 over 194 at bats. Earlier this year he broke the program record for hits in a career. They came up just shy of returning to Cary, N.C. for the Div-II College World Series after they were shutout 6-0 by Blue Point native Shane McDonald. Pena participated in our Axcess Invitational on Tuesday and he was one of the stars of the show. He...
