Farmingdale used to struggle in their trips to Florida. That seems to be a thing of the past. They concluded a 3-2 trip with a 7-6 victory over Nichols yesterday, who drop to 0-5. It was a back-and-forth affair and the score stood at 6-6 in the fourth. Starting pitcher for the Rams, Kevin Martinez, got hit around a little bit in his 4.1 innings of work. Kevin Cashman came on and relieved him and put out the fire. The sophomore fired 4.2 shutout innings, and allowed the Rams to score the go-ahead run in the sixth inning on an RBI double by Skyline Player of the Week Ed Bergmann. PJ Harrington also added in two RBI. The Rams move to 8-3 on the season. They will now begin their Skyline Conference schedule this weekend against Maritime on Saturday.

Since starting their Florida trip with an impressive 2-1 victory over No. 10 ranked Marietta, Farmingdale St. has been inconsistent. They lost 13-8 to Baldwin Wallace, 11-5 to Mansfield prior to defeating New Paltz 7-5. In the last game, Mike Dolce won his second game of the season, although he wasn’t at his sharpest. He threw 6.2 innings, allowed 10 hits, two walks and five earned. Sophomore stud Alex Weingarten fired 2.1 scoreless innings for the save. New Paltz made four errors which accounted for four of the seven runs. The Rams are back in action today against Nichols, which will conclude the Florida trip.
St. Joseph’s trip to Fort Myers has gotten off to a rough start. They lost 9-6 to Fredonia St and 6-5 to Southern VT. In the 6-5 loss, they were unable to hold a 5-2 lead in the sixth inning. Dan Diblasi suffered the defeat, he tossed 5.1 innings and allowed six runs (four earned). Joe Lynn drove in two runs for the Golden Eagles. They will return to action tomorrow against Mass-Boston.
After eight failed attempts, the Old Westbury Panthers won their first game of the season. They had a busy weekend, and finished 3-3 to bring their record to 3-11. They beat Yeshiva both games by a combined score of 51-0. Yeshiva is not known for their ability to win baseball games and the Panthers used it as an opportunity to bulk up. Nick Yip record six RBI, Alex Abanavas and Byron White added four each in the 36-0 win. The Panthers were then swept by Bates College by the scores of 3-2, 14-9 and 7-2. They beat Baruch 7-1 to conclude their weekend. After falling behind 1-0 on an RBI groundout by Nick Pomo-Roman, they scored seven unanswered runs. They compiled 11 hits, and Byron White drove in two runs. Tim Ingram won his first game of the season. They will play NJ City on Thursday.
Dowling lost in extra innings to Pace, beat Southern New Hampshire and had two games cancelled. In the extra-inning loss, Dowling didn’t help themselves by making three errors, the final one cost them the game against Pace. Tyler Badamo threw seven shutout innings but did not factor in the decision. The loss went to Robert Rose. Jon Cruz went 4-for-5 with a run scored in the loss. In their 4-2 victory, Tom Bamman fired the complete game for the win. He allowed seven hits and struck out eight. Jon Cruz, Rob Veltre and JC Brandmeier had multi-hits. The latter drove in two runs as well. They will be be in action Friday against Molloy.
Molloy won one, lost one and had another game cancelled in North Carolina this weekend. They topped Merrimack College 3-2, before losing 6-1 to Southern New Hampshire. In the win, Molloy overcame a 1-0 deficit with a three-run eighth inning, highlighted by Kyle Van Duyne’s RBI single. In the ninth, Matt Castaneda allowed a run to cut the lead to 3-2 but closed the door for the save. Max Schonfeld’s solid seven inning start was not rewarded with a victory, that went to reliever Anthony Eichhorn. In the loss, Alex Brosnan allowed six runs in 5.1 innings. Kevin Podell drove in the lone run for the Lions. They will return to action tomorrow against New Haven.
Although it got off to a dismal six-game losing streak, the Adelphi Panthers salvaged their annual Florida trip by winning their final two games against AIC and Assumption. In their 6-3 win against AIC, sophomore John Mulford fired a complete game, striking out 13 batters to record his first win of the season. The Massapequa native allowed only five hits and walked four. The Panthers knocked 10 hits, with multiple hit games from Brandon Stahl, Cliff Brantley, Kyle Ambury and Rich Mejia. They defeated Assumption 5-3. No statistics were available for this game, but freshman T.J. Santiago recorded his first collegiate win for the Panthers. Despite the rough week, Adelphi will have a chance to get right this week as they play seven games at home, beginning tomorrow against C.W. Post.
The NYIT Bears had a rough weekend, getting swept by Mount Saint Mary’s. The scores were 18-7, 11-8, 13-4 and 7-0. They drop to 0-11 on the season. In the second game, they fought back hard from a 4-1 deficit and took a 6-4 lead in the top of the fourth. The bullpen was unable to hold the fort and allowed seven runs in the finals three innings. Joe Daru drove in three runs in the loss. They will travel to Penn St. tomorrow.
Hofstra University split a double header with Furman on Saturday in South Carolina. The Pride won the first game, 4-2, thanks to eight strong innings from Nick Kozlowski and a two-run double from Matt Ford. Kozlowski gave up six hits and two runs while striking out four. Brett Schreiber came on for the save. Furman won the second game, 5-4, in the 10 innings on a walk-off single by Heath Burton. Brett Schreiber took the loss. Dalton Rouleau smacked three hits in the loss. The Pride will take on Fordham on Wednesday.
This weekend the Sea Wolves lost two of three to UC Riverside in California. They won the first game before dropping the next two. They won 2-1 behind a great outing by Brandon McNitt in his homecoming. He yielded only five hits and one run while striking out four in seven innings. Cameron Stone saved it for him. Kevin Krause and Toby Handley drove in the runs in the second inning. They lost 3-2 in the middle game, with Frankie Vanderka suffering the tough-luck loss. He threw 6.2, allowing three earned. Riverside scored all three runs in the seventh inning. The final game was an 11-3 blowout. The Sea Wolves compiled 11 hits but couldn’t come up with the big hit. Ryley MacEachern suffered the loss. They will play USC tomorrow night in Los Angeles.
Adelphi lost 5-2 to AIC in Boca Raton, FL. The Panthers have now lost six straight since their season opening victory. Senior Stephen Bove suffered the loss despite throwing six innings, yielding two runs. Cliff Brantley stayed hot for the Panthers, smashing three hits and home run. He has been quite a find for the Panthers. The Panthers will look to avoid an 0-for-Florida today against AIC. Dowling beat Felician 7-6 on a walk-off hit by Rob Veltre. It was a terrific character win for the Golden Lions. They came back from a 5-0 deficit, slowly chipping away until the 7th inning. After they gave up a one-run lead in the 9th on a wild pitch, they were able to atone for the mistake and win the ballgame, moving to 8-5. Veltre had two hits and two RBI in the game. They will take on Pace tonight...
