March 27 Recap

NYIT lost to LIU Brooklyn yesterday by the score of 12-10. They were in an early 6-0 deficit after one and 8-1 after five, but clawed back to make it a close game. Joe Daru had four hits and Nick Sebastian had three RBI. Matt Diaz suffered the loss for the Bears, who fall to 1-17 on the season. They will take on Farleigh Dickinson in a four-game series this weekend. Adelphi beat NE-10 rival Southern Connecticut by the score of 4-3. Captain Kevin Hutzel had two hits and three RBI including a triple which ultimately was the winning run. Mike Ceperano tossed 5.1 strong innings, but John Bivas was the winning pitcher. March 25 Recap

Yesterday the Stony Brook Sea Wolves defeated NYIT by the score of 3-2 to move to 10-9. They have now won 10 of 13 since their 0-6 start. The Sea Wolves received great pitching from starter Tim Knesnik and reliever Bryan Tatelman. The latter received the victory for four shutout innings with three strikeouts. The winning run came across in the sixth inning on a sac fly by Kevin Krause. The Hofstra Pride were defeated 12-4 by St. John’s. Graham Tebbit suffered the loss, he drops to 1-1 on the season. The Pride did compile 11 hits, led by Michael Friel but they committed four costly errors. Chris Kalica recorded the win for the Red Storm, he improves to 4-1. The Pride will take on Towson this weekend in a three-game set.

Three No-Hitters in One Day!

Suffolk County baseball opened up its regular season yesterday in a big way. Not one, not two, but three no-hitters were thrown. In League II, Dennis Buckstein of Sachem North fired a 14-k no-no against Whitman. It was the first no-hitter in 15 years for the program. The Flaming Arrows were victorious 2-0. The lone base runner was on an error. He only needed 81 pitches to accomplish the feat. In League III, Nick Arnold and Brent Baynon of West Islip combined to no-hit Smithtown West in a 12-0 shutout. Arnold pitched the first six innings with eight strikeouts and two walks and Baynon closed the door. It was the first no-hitter for West Islip since 2011. Weekend Recap

Stony Brook swept Albany and they are now back to .500 on the season at 9-9. Aside from the no-hitter, Brandon McNitt also fired a complete game in the 6-2 victory in the middle game. Kevin Courtney has three RBI in that game. In the third game, they won 7-3 with Tyler Honahan recording the victory with two innings of work. Cole Peragine broke a 3-3 tie in the eighth inning with an RBI double. NYIT recorded their first victory of the season on Saturday over LIU Brooklyn by the score of 10-6. They went on to lose 2 of 3 and their record drops to 1-15. In the victory, they pounded out 13 hits with multi-RBI games from Josh Canabal, Nick Sebastian and Matt Deblase.Evan Cohen recorded the win with three shutout innings. Vanderka Throws Another No-hitter

Photo Credit: Stony Brook Athletics There’s something about giving up base hits that Frankie Vanderka, Stony Brook ace, does not like. He tossed his third career no-hitter on Saturday against Albany in a 7-0 win. He walked two, hit one and struck out 10. “I started to notice around the seventh inning,” he said. “I realized I needed to get through the lineup one more time,” he added. Vanderka had no issue navigating through nine more outs. He didn’t allow the ball to leave the infield in the ninth inning and even struck out the final batter to cap it off.  His first no-hitter came in 2011 and he tossed another last season against Fordham. Two Times the Adversity for Matt Buckshaw

But suffering a different one just as you are about to return to full strength? Well that’s just absolutely cruel. Connetquot’s senior and Stony Brook-bound pitcher Matt Buckshaw had to face just that. After being diagnosed with a torn UCL and facing Tommy John Surgery he faced an uphill recovery. It was a rough day on the island for local teams. Adelphi dropped a close one, 4-3, to Nyack College. They had a 3-2 lead in the fifth but Chris Lemorocco  allowed the go-ahead run and suffered the loss. The Panthers put together only six hits, compiled by six players. They will have a huge weekend with double headers on Saturday and Sunday against Franklin Pierce and Southern New Hampshire. St. Joseph’s finished a Florida trip they would like to forget with a 22-3 loss to John Hopkins. They committed five errors allowed eight runs in consecutive innings. Matt Hess suffered the loss for the Golden Eagles who drop to 2-8, have lost eight in a row, and travel back to LI for a Skyline Conference matchup against Yeshiva. March 19 Recap

Stony Brook lost a 1-0 pitcher’s duel yesterday at Cal State Northridge. The winning run came across the plate on a walk-off walk in the bottom of the ninth inning. Chad Lee suffered the loss for the Sea Wolves who drop to 6-9 on the season and 3-4 in one-run games. The Sea Wolves got a tremendous effort from starting pitcher Tim Knesnik and reliever Bryan Tatelman who combined for eight shutout innings and allowing four hits. The offense only mustered up three hits. They will come home and begin a four game home stand this weekend. NYIT lost 8-0 to NYIT as their season-long losing streak continues. St. Joseph’s Drop Two

St. Joseph’s trip to Florida has not been kind so far. They have lost their first four games, including two yesterday to Mass-Boston. In the first game, they lost 5-3. They had battled back from a 4-0 deficit to cut the lead to one but were unable to close the deal. Steven Szobesky took the loss, he drops to 0-2 on the young season. He allowed four runs in five innings of work. Brian Godoy recorded two hits for the Golden Eagles. In the second game, they lost 9-7. They squandered a 4-0 lead that they built in the top of the first inning. They fell 7-3 but cut it down to one in the fifth inning. Once again, they were not able to find the big hit. NYIT Falls to Penn State

The NYIT Bears drop to 0-12 after losing a close one, 7-3, to Penn State. They had battled back to cut the deficit to 4-3, but allowed three runs to come across in the bottom of the seventh. Michael Sinnott suffered the loss, as he tossed 4.2 innings, allowing four earned runs while walking six. The Bears did smash 10 hits in the game; including three each by Joe Daru and Josh Canabal. They will return to action today against Penn St. in search of their first victory.

Stony Brook Takes Down USC

Tyler Honahan improved his record to 2-0 with 6.2 strong innings, allowing six hits and two earned runs. Cameron Stone closed it out with 2.1 spotless innings. Robert Chavarria recorded three hits and one RBI for Stony Brook and Kevin Courtney added two hits and one RBI as well. The Sea Wolves improved to 6-8 and have won six of eight. They will stay in California and play Cal State tonight.

Adelphi Tops CW Post

Photo Credit: Adelphi Athletics The Adelphi Panthers have woken up. They are back on track after defeating Nassau County foe CW Post yesterday by the score of 4-0. The Panthers outplayed them so thoroughly that the held the Pioneers to two hits while they committed four errors. Mike Ceparano recorded his first collegiate victory, and he was dominant. The lefty tossed six spotless innings, allowing only two hits, walking one and striking out six. He gave way to Mike Cranston to fired a scoreless seventh inning. Nick Batas, John Bivas and John Donnelly finished the shutout. Junior Nick Zito led the Panthers with three hits. Cliff Brantley added two hits and an RBI (and now batting .487).
