The Dowling Golden Lions defeated Queens College 4-1 in an ECC conference game to improve to 19-8 on the season. I was at the game and here are my takeaways.. Tyler Badamo can pitch for my team any day of the week. After allowing a run in the first inning on a wild pitch, he settled in and dominated an overmatched lineup. He fired a complete game for the fourth consecutive outing and set a career-high in strikeouts with 17 and walked none. He allowed six hits, with the lone extra base hit coming in the first inning. He improved his record to 5-1 an lowered his ERA to 0.54. He threw 119 pitches and did it with remarkable efficiency (76 percent strikes) and showed the ability to throw four pitches for strikes. Early on, he was sticking to fastball-slider combination, but began mixing in cu...

Adelphi improved to 14-12 with a 6-2 victory over Dominican. Rather than a normal game recap, I will write my observations from the game since I was in attendance… The starting pitcher, Mike Ceperano, was very impressive. The freshman faced some adversity in the first inning and allowed two runs to come in but settled in completely after that. I was impressed that he had command of three pitches on either side of the plate. He did benefit from an umpire that granted him roughly four or five inches off the plate inside to right-handed batters, but he still had to execute. He was 81-83 all day with his fastball, which had some cut action as opposed to typical tailing action from a lefty. His change-up was inconsistent, but that’s expected from a young pitcher. It sat at 75 mph, a...
Pitchers are the most unique breed in sports. They do not need to be psyched up to perform at their best like a linebacker. They do not need to be in peak physical shape to perform at their best like point guards. In fact, most pitchers are cerebral and perform their best if you just leave them alone. Or in the case of Dowling’s ace Tyler Badamo, he found he performs his best if he just leaves his arm alone. “For the first time in my career,” he said. “I had almost four months off of throwing. I took off the entire fall from throwing and did everything I could to be 100 percent by the time the season started,” he said. Following his 2013 season, in which he threw 83 innings and compiled a 2.60 ERA, Badamo decided to take a step back and prepare differently for...
Photo Credit: Molloy Athletics Stony Brook stayed hot with a 16-4 trouncing of Manhattan to improve to 17-11. The Sea Wolves were up 10-0 after two innings. Toby Handley went 3-for-3 with two RBI and Robert Chavarria, Cole Peragine, Casey Baker and Jack Parenty each had two hits. They also benefitted from sloppy defense by Manhattan–they committed five errors. Josh Barry got his second win of the season by throwing 5.1 strong innings, allowing one run. They will be back in action on Saturday when they begin a three-game set against Binghamton. NYIT lost both games of a double header to Siena 9-2 and 6-0 to drop to 1-24 on the season. They were down 6-0 early on in the first, but the pitching staff settled in after that. Nick Sebastian compiled two hits for the Bears. They will take ...
Photo Credit: Patrick E. McCarthy For the second straight week, a Nassau County high school pitcher has fired a perfect game. Last week, Mike Delio completed the swing-and-miss fest of 21 strikeouts, Papa–also a junior–struck out 17 in his team’s 8-0 win over Great Neck North. Papa, regarded as one of the better pitchers in the county, benefitted from the rare 9-3 putout on a would-be single to right field, but Francis Alexander came up firing and threw out the runner. He took care of the rest himself, allowing only three other balls to be put in play, with one of them being a groundball back to the mound. With the victory, Division improves to 5-1 on the season in Conference A-II. They are the class of the division but will be battling with Hewlett, Manhasset and Plained...
