Photo Credit: Farmingdale Athletics Every coach preaches that it takes all 25 guys to win, that it’s a team effort and not a single player will receive special treatment. But what is usually forgotten is that sometimes there is one player that can carry a team and that the team needs him to step up when it matters the most. Although he is less than two years removed from being an All-County high school player, Alex Weingarten has proven to be that type of player for the Farmingdale Rams. The Lynbook native has been their most reliable arm for the past two seasons and he will play a huge role in whether they win their seventh consecutive conference championship. He is used so frequently for one reason; the bigger the situation is, the better he pitches. “I really noticed that I ...
We’re inching to the finish line for the Division-III programs. Tomorrow begins the first round of the Skyline Conference playoffs for St. Joseph’s and Farmingdale, while Old Westbury will have a first-round bye. The latter two will have tune-up games today as they prepare for the postseason. As for the Divison-I and II teams, there are still some crucial regular season games remaining. Here’s what’s going on today. Divison-I: Monmouth @ Hofstra Army @ NYIT Division-II: Felician @ CW Post Molloy @ Dominican Adelphi @ Pace Divison-III: United States Merchant Marine Academy @ Old Westbury Briarcliffe @ St. Joseph’s
A lot has happened since March 1. One thing that is not on that list is an earned run being scored on Dowling’s Tyler Badamo. It is a streak that has spanned 69 innings and deflated his ERA from 2.35 to 0.43, tops in the nation among Divison-II pitchers. “To be honest I try not to sit and think about it,” said the senior. “If someone had told me in the beginning of the year that I was going to throw this many innings without giving up an earned run I would have laughed at them and probably told them they were crazy,” he added. In reality, he is now laughing at the competition that has compiled a feeble three extra-base hits during his 84 inning season. Additionally, he has now accumulated a program-record 108 strikeouts against a mere 17 walks. He is 7-2 on th...
Photo Credit: Stony Brook Athletics 10. NYIT: 4-36 The record says it all. They began the season with a losing streak of 14 games and followed that up with a 19-game streak. They have lost 12 games by 9+ runs. The silver lining is that Joe Daru has a .327 average and has been successful on 24 of 26 attempts. 9. St. Joseph’s: 16-17: Since their 2-8 start, they have actually played very well but they struggle against teams over .500. They could’ve really built up some credibility by sweeping Farmingdale but narrowly missed the opportunity in both games and are back under .500. They will have a tough path to win the conference. 8. Old Westbury: 18-19 They are 12-4 in the conference but have not done themselves any favors by losing winnable games to NYU-Poly, NJ City and Manhattan...
Farmingdale State enjoyed their senior day with a sweep of St. Joseph’s. The wins allowed them to finish their conference schedule with a record of 11-5, although they will not be hosting it for the first time in several years. The games were very close; they won 6-5 in 11 innings and 5-4. The first game was wild; St. Joe’s led 2-1 after one, it was 3-3 after two and Farmingdale led 5-3 after four. The pitchers settled in and the scored remained that way until the eighth. Mike Dolce, starter for the Rams, left after 7.1, having allowing three earned runs. The reliable Alex Weingarten came on but allowed an RBI single to Godoy. St. Joe’s tied it in the ninth on an error by the second baseman. After a scoreless 10th inning, Farmingdale won it in the 11th on an RBI single by...
Dowling swept a four-game series from Mercy College to improve to 29-11 on the season. Tyler Badamo continued his excellence with eight more shutout innings, allowing two hits and walking one while striking out 10. The numbers are ridiculous; he has not allowed an earned run in 69 innings to bring his ERA down to a microscopic 0.43. His 10 strikeouts give him a program-record 108 on the season. He is now 7-2 on the season. Adam Schuster led the offense with three hits, while Andrew Abreu added two and two RBI. Mercy helped the Golden Lions by committing three errors. They won the second game 2-1 on a walk-off RBI single by Tyler Hardison. JJ Bessell won his fourth game of the season after his dominant complete game effort. He struck out 10, walked one and scattered eight hits. Bessell had...
Stony Brook swept America-East foe Albany in a three-game series to improve their record to 25-14. They won the first game 6-3 which was aided by a three-run first inning. Brandon McNitt threw 5.2 innings, allowing one ER for his fourth win of the season. Bryan Tatelman allowed two ER in his 2.2 innings of relief but Cameron Stone locked down his seventh save. Kevin Krause had three hits and drove in three for the Sea Wolves. They won the second game 12-7, despite briefly falling behind 6-5. Robert Chaverria, Cole Peragine and Josh Mason all compiled three hits with Kevin Courtney driving in three runs. Ryley MacEachern struggled through his 3.1 innings, allowing four ER, but Tim Knesnik fired 5.2 while allowing one ER for his third win of the season. They cruised to the series sweep with ...
Photo Credit: St. Joseph’s Athletics NYIT decided the turn their season around a tad too late. After halting their 19-game losing streak, they have now won two in a row to improve to 3-33. They defeated Iona 6-5. The winning run scored in the bottom of the eighth on a throwing error by the shortstop. In a strange pitching box score, Elias Martinez came in relief in the third inning after Matt Diaz struggled and he proceeded to throw seven shutout innings and record his first win of the season. The offense benefitted from three unearned runs but Frank ore led the way with three hits and a run scored. They will take on Maine this weekend. Adelphi beat Dowling 7-4 to improve to 19-17 and drop the Golden Lions to 25-11. John Mulford out dueled Tom Bammann to hand him his first loss of th...
Photo Credit: Old Westbury Athletics Hofstra beat LIU-Brooklyn 11-3 to get back on the winning track and improve to 16-15. It was a 3-3 game in the seventh until the Pride broke it open with home runs from Brian MacDonald, Ryan Donovan and Eric Peterson. MacDonald scored four runs and drove in two. Peterson drove in four runs and scored one. The Pride threw seven pitchers, with Cody Normand winning his first game of the season. They will take on Willam & Mary this weekend in a three-game set. CW Post lost 12-8 to Mercy College to fall to 15-13. The game was tied 4-4 in the eighth until Mercy exploded with a seven-run eighth. Joey Arena threw 7.1 innings, gave up 4 er while suffering his fourth loss of the season. Brian Tinney had three hits, drove in a run and scored one. Tom Tolan had...
Stony Brook lost their first home game of the season after 15 consecutive wins. They were edged 4-1 by Central Connecticut. They are now 22-14 on the season. I was at the game, but it was not the type of game to evaluate a team on. They did not get anything going offensively–they only had eight hits–and no player had multiple. The opposing pitcher, Nick Boyd, was very stocky but stifled them for six innings. He had some good velocity on his pitches, but I didn’t think it was anything that the Sea Wolves couldn’t handle. Their lone run came in the fourth inning on a HBP, and they stranded bases loaded after that. The starting pitcher for Stony Brook, Josh Barry, lasted two innings. He allowed four hits and two walks, and hurt himself by throwing away a potential doub...
Photo Credit: Adelphi Athletics CW Post beat Dowling 5-3, with Tyler Badamo suffering the loss in relief. The Golden Lions drop to 24-10 on the season, while the Pioneers improve to 14-12. Dowling led 3-2 in the top of the eighth. JJ Bessell exited after 7.1 innings, allowing three runs (one earned). Badamo came in relief and allowed an RBI single by Anthony Brunetti. In the ninth, Tom Tolan drove in two runs with a single to give the Pioneers a 5-3 lead. Brian Tinney fired two shutout innings in relief for the victory. He came in relief of Jake DeCarli who went the first seven innings and allowed three runs. The teams combined for only 12 hits; the pitchers kept them uncomfortable all day. Tolan and Brunetti for the only players with multi-hit games. The runs charged to Badamo were unea...
Stony Brook lost two of three to UMass-Lowell to drop to 22-13 on the season. They won the first game of the series, 9-3, behind a strong offensive attack. They put the game away with a five-run fifth inning, which broke a 1-1 tie. They compiled 12 hits; three by Kevin Krause (three runs, two RBI), two each by Jack Parenty, Robert Chavarria, Kevin Courtney and Casey Baker. Bryan Tatelman improved his record to 3-0 with 4.2 innings, allowing two earned runs in relief of Tim Knesnik who was taken out after 3.2 innings despite not allowing a run. They will play Central Connecticut tomorrow at home. Hofstra also lost two of three, theirs coming at the hands of the University of Delaware. They are now 15-15 on the season. They won the first game on Friday 3-2. The Pride overcame a 2-0 deficit, ...
