One on One With Harborfields Head Coach Casey Sturm

Alex de Bourja Interview Conducted by Eric MoskowitzWhat was it like to make the playoffs last year after the multi-year drought? It was a great feeling and it felt like a turning point for the program. I got into coaching after watching Eastport South-Manor celebrate a county championship on our field in 2006.  I never wanted to experience that feeling again. The kids really worked hard to prove that Harborfields belonged last year and we ended up undefeated on our home field.  It felt like we constantly proved people wrong last year, which was fun. How do you feel about your team this year?  Do you feel you guys are ready for another playoff run?I’m always going to believe in my guys. We’re going to be young this year, we graduated 8 seniors, and lost a great kid that was our starting rig...

Mineola Looks to Build on Strong Season

Photo Credit: Vinny Messana The Mineola Mustangs are coming off a strong 2014 campaign that was “three years in the making”, according to 18th year Head Coach Helms Bohringer. “They did everything they were supposed to do from a work ethic standpoint,” said Bohringer, who was a 37th round draft pick out of Adelphi in 1989. “They believed that they could win and sometimes that a tough thing when you came up as sophomores and you’re losing,” he added. Those years of experience, combined with an abundance of talent, allowed the Mustangs to compile a 14-7 record and qualify for a playoff berth. Unfortunately, they were defeated by Lynbrook and Hewlett in the playoffs in the double-elimination tournament. Having lost four of their seniors graduate and m...

Marcus Stroman Tears His ACL

Photo Credit: USA Today Long Island took a hit today when it was announced that Toronto Blue Jay’s RHP Marcus Stroman tore his ACL during a Spring Training fielding drill. Stroman, the pride of Patchogue-Medford high school, had a terrific 2014 campaign in which he was 11-6 with a 3.65 ERA. As a starter, he had a 3.39 ERA over 120 IP. He struck out 3.81 batters for every walk and allowed only 1.14 base runners per inning. Most impressively, in my opinion, was his ability to respond from a tough August. Many pundits believed he hit a wall and should be shut down for the season. Instead, he went 3-1 in September with a 2.61 ERA over 31 innings, while he struck out 26. Entering the offseason, many people became high on him. ESPN writer Jayson Stark even devoted an entire column to him l...
