Photo Credit: Vinny Messana The Farmingdale–St. Joseph’s double header that was originally supposed to be played on March 28, will now be played on Monday April 6. It will be a crucial match up for the Skyline Conference rivals, with each team currently under .500 for the season, but with a 2-0 conference record. The Golden Eagles are trending up, however, they are on a four-game winning streak. The Rams are coming off a double header sweep too (of Yeshiva), with an aggregate score of 29-0, but they will have a tough test today with a double header at Keystone Stone. The teams last faced in the 2011 Regionals in Cortland, and the Rams were defeated 6-2. They are currently 10-6.
Photo Credit: Dowling Athletics March 31 was the best day of Dan Parisi’s life, he stated. It had nothing to do with being named the MVP of March. He experienced the birth of his first born, Giavanna. “Truly the best day of my life,” said Dowling’s senior catcher. “I never thought it was possible to love someone as much as I love Giavanna,” he added. Parisi has a lot to be proud of right now–on-and-off the field. On the field, he has led the Dowling Golden Lions to a great start. Through 13 games, he is leading the team with a .435 AVG, 20 hits, 11 RBI and a .500 OBP. For good measure, he is 3-for-4 in stolen bases. Parisi was, of course, part of Dowling’s tremendous run last season in which they came within one victory of qualifying for the...
Photo Credit: Farmingdale State Athletics Great news for Long Island baseball fans. After 14 straight years of being held in Appleton, WI, the Division-III College World Series has a new location and it will be right here at SUNY Farmingdale, according a source with knowledge of the subject. “Farmingdale is right in the center of the baseball universe”, said an NCAA spokesperson. “We figured why not reward their fans with the crown jewel of events”, he added. It was just six years ago that the Farmingdale State Rams shocked the New York region by winning the tournament with a defeat of heavily favored Cortland and RPI. Farmingdale’s Tom Heeman was named MVP of the tournament. The 2015 Rams have gotten off to a slow start, but this might be just the remedy they...

Photo Credit: Vinny Messana We dodged a bullet this past weekend when teams were able to get in a couple games despite another snowstorm on Friday. Photo Credit: Vinny Messana A little cold weather wasn’t going to stop Brendan Butler today. The senior went five innings, allowing three ER for his first win since transferring from Farleigh Dickinson, in Dowling‘s 5-3 victory over Bridgeport. He was relieved by Dominic Danetti, who threw four dominant innings out of the ‘pen for his first save–he allowed only two hits.Bridgeport took an early 1-0 lead in the second inning, but the Golden Lions quickly responded with two of their own in the second. Rob Costanzo drove in a run with a ground out to second base. Tyler Piccolo gave Dowling the lead with an RBI double. Bridgeport did tie it up in the fourth with a run-scoring single, but again the Golden Lions wouldn’t allow them to enjoy prosperity. Adam Schuster ...
Photo Credit: LIU Post Athletics Unphased by the snow fall in Dobbs Ferry, NY, Jake DeCarli threw 7.2 dominant innings against Mercy, allowing only one hit to lead LIU Post to a 3-1 win over Mercy. The Pioneers got out to an early 1-0 lead on a wild pitch which scored Tom Tolan. Kenny Daley increased the lead to 2-0 when he drove an RBI single to left field. That was all DeCarli would need. The 6’0″ sophomore allowed only an unearned run while striking out eight and walking three for his second win of the season.Dan Jagiello came on in relief in the eighth inning and threw 1.1 shutout innings for his first save of the season. He fanned three and allowed one hit in his outing. The Pioneers were sloppy in the field–they committed three errors but Mercy did not capitalize on th...
Head Coach Rich SmithPhoto Credit: Garden City Public Schools The Garden City Trojans are coming off a 13-7-3 season, in which they qualified for a playoff berth. They were beaten twice by Division in the double-elimination format. They aren’t even the team that the Trojans are most excited about getting revenge against. That would be Bellmore Kennedy. According to Head Coach Rich Smith, “Last season we were 0-2-1 verse (them). We let late inning leads get away in two of the three games. A win in that series would have given us the conference title. We are geared up to not let that happen again,” he added. The tie game went eight innings but was called due to darkness. They also played a close 4-3 game in the first game of the series. They had a two-run lead in the fifth i...
Photo Credit: Adam Rubin The Long Island high school baseball season may be pushed back, according to one member of the coaches association. “Pitchers have been able to throw one time. Hitters have only seen batting cages. There’s no comparison from the gym to the field,” he said. Even if this weekend does not feature lots of snow–there is concern that the inability to practice outside will hinder the pitchers ability to go deep into games. While some teams have the depth to throw only three innings at a time with a pitcher, most teams have only one or two reliable arms and that is simply asking for an injury. With all the recent attention to arm injuries, that is not appealing for coaches to deal with. The league games were scheduled to begin one week from this Mon...
Photo Credit: Vinny Messana Some players take some time to get acclimated to playing at the collegiate level. Between the top-tier talent, grueling season and more aggressive coaching styles, freshman can sometimes be overwhelmed. Most freshman aren’t like Stony Brook’s Andruw Gazzola, however. The 6’0″ first baseman is one month into his college career and has already been named America East Rookie of the Week twice. He has compiled a .298 AVG (17-for-57) with six RBI, four walks and only six strikeouts through Stony Brook’s first 16 games. He has filled in commendably for the recently-graduated Kevin Courtney, who was a mainstay in the lineup.Players like Gazzola see that as an opportunity to excel, not an excuse to tread water. He was a four-time All-League p...

Eight teams were in action and cumulatively they went 3-5… Division-I: Stony Brook cruised past Iona 11-2. They feverishly began a comeback when they were down 6-0 in the fifth. They scored one in the fifth and five in the sixth. Brad Witkowski, who got them on the board with an RBI single also tied up the game at six with a two-run single. U...
