Photo Credit: Molloy Athletics And then there were seven. Molloy was eliminated from postseason contention with their loss to Mercy by the score of 8-6. Despite their 20-20 record, they fell to 8-12 in ECC play. They join the list of Hofstra and NYIT as teams that will not qualify for postseason play this season. They entered the season knowing that underclassmen would play significant roles, but many of them had experience during their 2014 playoff appearance in which they surprised some people and defeated St. Thomas Aquinas in the first round of the ECC tournament. This season they came out of the gate strong but have scuffled of the late. They lost four consecutive conference games last week and that is enough to spoil postseason hopes. Yesterday it was a four-run sixth inning that did t...

Photo Credit: Jim Ferchland Aside from Stony Brook’s sweep of Albany and Dowling clinching a postseason berth, it was not the cheeriest of Sundays for Long Island teams. Division-I: NYIT lost 5-1 to Binghamton to lose the series. A four-run fifth inning was the difference in the ballgame. David Plotkin started and was tagged with the loss for the Bears. He didn’t have his best control–he walked six in five innings for his first loss of the season. The Bears will host Albany in a DH on Tuesday that is re-scheduled from March 10. Hofstra was swept by Northeastern this weekend. The third game was an 8-3 final which dropped the Pride to 15-25 on the season. Brian MacDonald got the Pride on the board in the second inning with a solo home run. The lead did not stand up, however...

Photo Credit: Molloy Athletics Molloy was swept in a DH today by Mercy by the scores of 4-3 and 5-3, but that should not overshadow the spectacular pitching performance by ace Shea Spitzbarth in the first game. The junior from Staten Island pitched the first 10 innings in the 14-inning marathon. He allowed no ER, only three hits and five walks while striking out 17 batters. He threw 143 pitches. On the season, he now has a 1.80 ERA over 55 innings with 83 strikeouts while holding opposing batters to a .204 average. He nearly got the win, as Molloy scored a run in the 11th inning on an RBI single by Anthony Alberghina but the bullpen could not hold the lead. In the bottom of the 14th, Mercy won it on a sac fly to conclude the 3:28 marathon. The loss was incredibly painful for the Lions’...
Photo Credit: St. Joseph’s Athletics It’s doesn’t matter the opponent–a perfect game is an accomplishment that should be recognized and celebrated. Josh Outsen of St. Joseph’s struck out 12 Maccabees batters in a perfect game today. The Golden Eagles won by the score of 11-0. “I’d say around the third inning after I got through the lineup once,” said the sophomore from Copiague HS in regards to when he starting thinking about the perfecto. “Felt real good out there the entire game,” he added. He noted that it was his first perfect game or no-hitter at any level. With the victory, the Golden Eagles improve to 13-1 in conference play. They also won the first game of the DH by the score of 15-1 which dropped Yeshiva to 0-15 on the s...
Last week we debuted our Power Rankings for college programs on the island. This week will be our second edition. There is a bit of a shake up as the number dwindles close to one…10. NYIT: The Bears actually have been playing well lately. Although they went 1-3 this week, that is an improvement on the direction they had been trending. Louis Mele and David Plotkin have been the bright spots for them. 9. Hofstra: The Pride went 2-3 this week and will take on Northeastern this week. They can still crush the ball, especially with a red-hot Steven Foster and Brian MacDonald, but the pitching has just been non-existent for the most part. They have one starter, Adam Seibert, with an ERA under 5.40. In this age of decreased offense, that is hard to believe. With a 3-12 conference record, the...
Photo Credit: Farmingdale Athleitcs Every year there is usually one player that has an absurd season–something in the neighborhood of a .415 AVG with 30 runs scored–and runs away with the Player of the Year honors. Photo Credit: St. Joseph’s Athletics This season, there are actually a handful of players that fit that bill. It’s going to be nearly impossible to decide who deserves the awards. Here’s a rundown of the top candidates in alphabetical order and their key stats…Nick Girardi, St. Josephs: .418 AVG, (38-for-91), 18 R, 17 RBI, 7 BB, 5 K, .470 OBP, .549 SLG (1-1 W-L, 2 SVMike Marino, Farmingdale: .508 AVG (39-for-77), 23 R, 1 HR, 19 RBI, 13 BB, 15 K, 20-22 SB, .576 OBP, .688 SLG Photo Credit: Old Westbury Athletics Brendan Sullivan, St. Joseph’...
Farmingdale’s Fourth Consecutive Skyline Title in 2011 For the past seven years, the Farmingdale State Rams have ruled the Skyline Conference. Teams have come close to knocking them off the pedestal, but to this point nobody has been successful. In fact, for the past four seasons, Old Westbury has had them on the brink but they were unable to close the deal. Here we are in 2015, and it is one week before the Conference playoffs. Farmingdale sits in third place in the Skyline, and it’s hard to make the case they are better than St. Joseph’s or Old Westbury. But, I’m only interested in starting a debate that is backed up with numbers.Let’s take a look at some of the critical stats: Offense: Batting Average: 1. Old Westbury- .3302. Farmingdale- .3243. St. Joseph...
There should be more cool events like this. Newfield and Centereach will play today at Bethpage Park, home to the Long Island Ducks, today at 4 pm. He will be playing at NYIT in the fall and is having a tremendous season for the Wolverines. He already has three wins on the season. He will be matched up against Greg Marino of the Cougars. He is coming off a complete game shutout last week. The 6’7″ fireballer will be pitching for the Stony Brook Sea Wolves in the fall. Tickets are free for this event.
Photo Credit: Molloy Athletics It’s rare that a player can make as much noise with his voice as his bat when he’s hitting .349 with a .433 OBP, 23 RBI and 23 runs scored through 35 games in the East Coast Conference. Molloy’s John Galanoudis is one of those rare cases. He has released two country albums on iTunes; “Between the Sound and Sea” and “Fire Still Burning”. Music has always been a big part of my life. My entire Greek side of the family is musical and I pretty much grew up around it. I taught myself how to play guitar when I was 12 years old and it has been my side thing ever since. I am blessed to have released two country album on iTunes, Spotify, Amazon and other digital stores. It is always something I can go to in order to unwind ...
