We’ve already seen what he can do on the mound in the big leagues but now he’s flexing his vocal chords in the studio. [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z3HOxMFIIdo] Toronto Blue Jays ace and Medford native, Marcus Stroman, contributed a verse on his longtime friend, and up-and-coming artist, Mike Stud’s fourth studio album “These Days”. The song, also titled “These Days” is an ode to the duo’s new found success. Below is a transcript of the lyrics. It does not appear in the music video. “Everything I see up in my head just comes to life Got my day 1’s rollin ’round with me on every single flight Yeah that’s right That’s life, spoil everyone’s that’s with me Made it rain in Vegas wi...
There was a time when seniority was existent in baseball. You had to wait your chance even if you possessed superior skills to the older player. Some coaches really believed the freshman needed to watch and learn. Those coaches needed to go. Fortunately, the majority of coaches subscribe to the theory that the best players must be on the field. In 2016, there will be a tremendous amount of freshmen that will pay pivotal roles for their teams. Here is a countdown of the top 10 that could determine how far their teams go… 10. Aaron Glickstein, Stony Brook: [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SCVR4hdv_MA] He would be higher on this list but he is coming off Tommy John surgery and it is not clear how the coaching staff will implement him back into the pitching staff. In 2014, he was...
Old Westbury entered 2015 knowing that they would get plenty of offensive production. They did just that, but it came from sources that did not receive any pre-season acclaim. Despite having two senior All-Conference outfielders, their best offensive player was arguably freshman Dean Sheridan. The then-freshman, coming from St. Anthony’s HS, got off to a slow start but began to heat up in the middle of the season. After going 2-for-3 on April 11 at St. Joseph’s, he rattled off a 13-game hitting streak in which he recorded multiple hits on nine (!) occasions. He played a pivotal role in Old Westbury winning the Skyline Conference title and appearing in their first NCAA regional since 2001. For his efforts, he was named second team All-Conference and to Baseball on t...
At 6 pm yesterday, the voting of the Hall of Fame was announced. It was Ken Griffey Jr. and Mike Piazza who would be enshrined this coming July in Cooperstown–the mecca of baseball. The two players, aside from both growing up in Pennsylvania and being icons in the 1990s, took very different paths to the big leagues. Griffey was the son of a baseball star, Ken Griffey Sr., who starred for the Cincinnati Reds teams of the mid 1970s, known as the “Big Red Machine”. Griffey Jr., or just Junior as he was referred to, graduated from Archbishop Moeller HS in Cincinnati, an all-male, college-prep Catholic school. He was the No. 1 overall pick in the 1987 draft by the Seattle Mariners. He debuted as a teenager in 1989 and became arguably the best No. 1 pick ever (along with Alex...

2015 is in the rear view mirror and we are focusing squarely on 2016. Every single team improved their rosters vastly thanks to savvy recruiting. Below is our pre-season top 10 Power Ranking of the Long Island NCAA-affiliated colleges. This is based on last year’s results, our observations from watching those games as well as their chances of competing for a conference championship in 2016. If all things were equal, the program that plays in the higher Division was given the advantage. 10. NYIT The program is right on the cusp of turning a corner. They improved from four wins in 2014 to 14 in ’15. They also will be returning the best power hitter on Long Island in Louis Mele (nine home runs last season) and had an influx of recruits highlighted by Frank Valentino from Suffolk C...
"Keep an eye on them to begin an extended period of success"
Steven Matz entered the building to a huge crowd at his alma mater, Ward Melville High School, to attend his pitching clinic. There was four stations, each filled with dozens of young players hoping to pick up some wisdom from Long Island’s brightest stars–many of which were donning Matz’ No. 32 uniform. The local stars were all in attendance to assist Matz in the clinic. Some players in attendance were A.J. Nunziato (2007 Carl Yastrzemski Award winner), Joe Flynn (2015 League I MVP), Anthony Kay (2013 Paul Gibson Award winner and current member of Team USA), among many others. Also in attendance was Philadelphia Phillies scout Tom Downey, New York Mets scout Larry Izzo, Dr. Luga Podesta of St Charles Orthopedics (former team physician, Anaheim Angels and LA Dodgers), St...
Years ago, kids grew up playing all sports. Even if they favored baseball, they would play soccer in the fall to build their endurance and play basketball in the winter to maintain their side-to-side agility. Those times have changed. Everything is about specializing your skills and perfecting your craft. The youngest flock of Major League superstars grew up in the era of specialized, year-round training. The classic Bryce Harper story is that after his epic 12-for-12 performance in a double header as a 12-year-old–in which he hit 11 home runs–he got off the plane, came home and went straight to the batting cage. You can’t teach that type of determination but, if you have it, you can certainly utilize the resources available to make yourself the best player around. Michae...
It’s not often you can have all the college coaches and top baseball players on Long Island in one room. For one night we were able to make that happen. I am truly appreciative of the turnout despite the poor weather and the distance many of the members of the audience had to commute. In addition to the All-Long Island team, we also crowned Andruw Gazzola with the Rookie of the Year, Jake DeCarli with the Cy Young Award and Jack Parenty with the Most Valuable Player Award. On the high school side, we honored John Hengge with the Courage Award and Nick Fanti with the Steven Matz Award. Tyler Badamo of the New York Mets, Charles Galiano of the Milwaukee Brewers, Bryan Verbitsky of the San Diego Padres and Steve Marino of the Southern Illinois Miners were in attendance as well. Special ...
