Today is an important day for many of the Long Island teams. After having a rough start to the season, it’s crucial they escape with a victory to relieve some of the early-season jitters and to get a W on the board before the calendar hits March. Division-I: Stony Brook will close out their three-game set with Baylor University today at 2 pm. They lost the first two games 16-2 and 20-4. Clearly, Baylor has a potent offense. The Sea Wolves will be looking to snap their four-game skid. Hofstra will look to escape Florida with a victory against the University of Missouri. They lost a DH yesterday by the scores of 8-0 and 11-4. They have found the SEC very difficult to figure out. The bright spots have been Dave Jesch‘s strong return from Tommy John surgery (5 K’s through 3 I...
Old Westbury took care of business today by sweeping a non-conference DH from Baruch College at Baseball Heaven by the scores of 7-1 and 12-0. In the first game, transfer Danny Aguilo threw six strong innings, allowing one ER while striking out nine batters against two walks for his first win as a Panther. The offense backed him early and often. Kevin Lao got the scoring going with a solo home run in the first inning. They added a run in the second inning on an RBI single by Joey Walsh to score Paul Rapoli. They broke it open with a four-spot in the fifth inning on an RBI single by Mike Cardino, RBI double by Rapoli and RBI singles by Joe Boscia and Louis Sileno. Nick Dorcean closed the door with a scoreless seventh inning. The second game was much of the same. Two transfers, Danny D’...
By Nakeem Grant St. Joseph’s Golden Eagles open up their 2016 season with a bang, defeating the Plattsburgh St. Cardinals, 8-1. Senior pitcher, Nick Girardi set the tone for the game on the hill while the offense gave him more than enough run support. Last year’s Skyline Conference Player of the Year and named to Baseball on the Island‘s All-Long Island team, Girardi was in complete control to start the game. He struck out the first eight batters, showing complete command on the mound. “He was always ahead of the hitters and he concentrated on pounding the strike zone today,” said St. Joseph’s head coach, Richard Garrett. Girardi pitched into the fourth inning, striking out eight batters and giving up no hits on 56 pitches. “We had a number that we wanted him to stop at and that’s wh...
When Jeremy Charles transferred from the University of Hartford, it was clear the Old Westbury Panthers were getting a terrific addition to their pitching staff. What he has done in his two starts has far exceeded what they could’ve hoped for. After firing seven dominant innings against Kean University–including retiring the final 20 batters he faced–he has now put himself into the early conversation for Skyline Pitcher of the Year. The Panthers got out to an early 1-0 on an RBI ground out by Dean Sheridan. The Cougars answered back in their half of the first inning with a run on an RBI single. That was the last time they sniffed first base. Charles went into cruise control and retired the side in each of the next six innings with nine strikeouts to bring his total to 18 ...
If you bought a Maserati for $150,000, would you take any chances of ruining its value by driving an entire year without getting the oil changed or tires rotated? No. And if you have an athlete with an arm that could potentially be worth millions, would you let him pitch an entire season without taking the proper precautions to prevent injury? Of course not. But until recently there was no accurate way to prevent injuries so they use the dreaded innings limits and pitch counts. As we know, every pitcher is different and 200 innings for one guy might be asking too much, while guys like Clayton Kershaw and Felix Hernandez thrive off more work. One company, Motus Global, is forever changing how we prevent injuries. Here’s what Bryan Goelz, the Director of Business Development at Motus G...
2015 was a great year for Pat-Med, compiling a 16-6 record and winning a playoff game and having numerous players receive accolades. The only downside to that level of success is that it featured the biggest graduating class of Head Coach Anthony Frascogna’s 15-year coaching tenure. Some of those players include Div-I recruits such as catcher Matt Codispoti (Albany) and Rich Ciufo (Brown), Div-II players such as Brett Malm (Adelphi), their ace pitcher Andrew Garcia and leadoff extraordinaire Ron Linsalato (Suffolk CC). Fortunately, for a program like Pat-Med, there are not too many down years. With the way they have raised the bar for excellence–producing players like Marcus Stroman, Chris Phelan and Matt Vogel, they consistently produce tremendous talent. Next in line could po...

They took Ward Melville to the absolute edge before finally getting defeated by a passed ball in the eighth inning of the Suffolk County Class AA quarterfinals. Regardless, winning 17-games is always a tremendous accomplishment for a team. They will, however, have to replace a terrific pitching staff that featured Brandon Lamanna (five wins), Rob Tamarro (four wins) and John Craft (five wins). They will be looking to a group of four young promising arms to fill that void. Nick Trabacchi, Anthony Amato, Nick Grande and Mike Zito will all be counted on to lead the way. Eleventh year Head Coach Al Nucci stated that all four of those arms are capable, but are untested because they were not needed last year, given their dominant rotation. Grande will have a much larger role than a pitcher–...
When it comes to Suffolk Class A baseball, Rocky Point has built up quite a reputation as a power house over the 15-year tenure of Head Coach Andrew Aschettino. They had qualified for the playoffs each of the past 11 years entering 2015. Pre-season injuries to their ace, third-hole hitter and starting shortstop forced their hand to call up several underclassmen and it ultimately cost them a playoff spot. Although it sacrificed their success last season, they did earn valuable playing time that Aschettino believes will bode well for this year. Leading their offensive attack is catcher and Cochise College-bound Kyle Strovink. “He’s so dynamic,” said Aschettino. “He can do so many different things, that’s what makes him a unique weapon. He can work deep counts, h...

The Bears brought the bats out in their series finale against Coppin State. They got out to an early 8-0 in the fourth inning, highlighted by a bases-clearing double by James Bulva to score Thomas Joannou, Joe Daru and Matthew DeAngelis. Junior transfer Dixon Marble was more than equal to the task–he went 6.0 IP, allowing 2 ER on three hits while striking out four in his debut with the Bears. The offense was led by Joe Daru (4-for-5, 4 R) who continued his torrid start to the season. He went 11-for-14 in the series and scored an incredible seven runs. As Head Coach Bob Malvagna stated before the season, the offense will be predicated on his ability to get on base and score runs. He stole 30 bases last year with a low OBP, and so far he has certainly lived up to the lofty expectations...
