Eric Hassell’s Three Hit Day, Ed Baram’s 7 Strong Innings Lead Adelphi to 10-3 Victory

By Vinny Messana After falling behind 2-0 in the second inning, the Adelphi Panthers’ bats went to work and put up the next 10 runs of the ball game over the next five innings. With freshman Ed Baram throwing up zeros, it was more than enough and the Panthers secured the 10-3 victory over Philadelphia University. Junior Eric Hassell smacked three hits, including a long two-run shot in the break the game wide open at 9-2 in the sixth inning. “We came out for some early BP, we knew the wind was blowing out,” said Hassell. “They had a couple slow guys on the mound so we just tried to sit back on the ball and make hard contact with a windy day,” he added. After retiring the side in order in the first inning, Baram ran into trouble in the second inning. He allowed ...

Division Will Be Counting Heavily on Last Year’s JV Team to Protect the Nassau ‘Class A’ Crown

After defeating Bayport-Blue Point in the Class A Long Island Championship last season, the Blue Dragons of Division HS will enter the 2016 season with the target on their backs again. Under Head Coach Tom Tuttle, who is now in his ninth year, the program has won four County Championships and two Long Island Championships. They are clearly one of the perennial powerhouses on the island. This season, however, they will have to go to battle without virtually all of their key cogs from last season’s title run. “We had five or six guys that were three-year starters,” said Tuttle. “We had a ton of experience,” he added. They were fortunate to have a three-man rotation of James Varela, Anthony Papa and Kieran McLaughin that all signed to play college baseball. The f...

Ray Ligouri K’s 10, Outduels Jeremy Charles 5-1

The Old Westbury Panthers felt good about their chances heading into their home opener today against NJ City with their ace Jeremy Charles on the hill. Unfortunately, the Gothic Knights scratched across a run in the sixth and seventh inning against him and that was all their freshman Ray Ligouri needed to record the 6-1 victory– his first collegiate win. The NJ native fired a complete game, taking a shutout into the ninth inning before Dean Sheridan drove in Tommy Zeigen with an RBI single to put the Panthers on the board. “We have a lot of respect for Old Westbury, said NJ City’s Head Coach Jerry Smith. “We knew they’d have a good pitcher coming in with the week off, so we knew what our approach would be–try to stay in the game as long as possible, then...

Jagiello, Andreoli Lead Pioneers to 6-1 Win over Bloomfield

by Vinny Messana After a couple less-than-stellar outings, Dan Jagiello appears to have righted the ship. The hard-throwing RHP for LIU Post–who has generated a great deal of buzz due to his sizzling fastball–threw seven stellar innings to defeat Bloomfield 6-1. He did so throwing primarily fastballs, which accounted for seven of his nine strikeouts. “I feel like I didn’t really need my change up today,” said the West Islip grad. “Fastball was really working, so there was no need to change speeds,” he added. He saved his change up for the biggest spot in the game–with a runner on second and two outs with the Pioneers clinging to a 4-1 lead, Jagiello unleashed a filthy change which resulted in his ninth strikeout of the game, and it eliminated...

In-Season Pitcher’s Recovery Program

The RECOVERY SERIES is an essential component to training and follows proven protocols that facilitate recovery. Maximal progress in any training program is jeopardized without adequate recovery. This program returns balance to the fatigued body and enhances the athlete’s response to the training stimulus. Movements in these sessions focus on muscular tension release techniques utilizing foam rolls, trigger point therapy, sports yoga, manual therapy, etc. These strategies will help you re-establish the length-tension relationship with your muscles, break up any adhesions/knots, reduce stiffness, and increase circulation to flush body systems and re-energize the athlete for the next training session or competitive day. Our IN-SEASON PITCHER PROGRAM is designed to facilitate and expedite the...

They defeated Kean University, 10-5, to end their six-game losing streak to the season. It also ended their five-game losing streak to the Cougars which dates back to 2011, when I was a member of the Rams. They scored five runs in the eighth inning–all with two outs, thanks to an RBI single by Brandon Ernest, two-run single by Ryan Gaffney, steal of home by Anthony Gigante and an RBI single by Domenic Palumbo to break the game open. David Otero Jr., starting pitcher for the Rams, went 5.0 IP, allowed five runs (four ER) on eight hits while striking out two. After falling behind 1-0 in the second inning, ...
