by Danny Gatta The series opener of a four game series between conference opponents Dowling and LIU Post featured Dennis Buckstein and Jake DeCarli. The game was mostly dominated by the Pioneers, who held a 4-2 lead entering the eighth. Dowling rallied for nine runs in the eighth inning, and won the game 11-4. Pioneers’ Rob Andreoli started the game by ripping a double to centerfield. After loading the bases with a HBP and walk, freshman Dave Brehm lined a double through the right side to give Post the early 2-0 lead. Dowling answered back in the bottom of the inning. A two-out triple to dead center by RJ Going followed by a bloop single over the second baseman’s head off the bat of Mike Rizzitello cut the lead in half, making it 2-1 Post after one. LIU Post would get the run right back of...
by Vinny Messana The Farmingdale State Rams broke out the lumber in their 16-1 victory over Baruch. They smacked 22 hits with five of those going for extra bases. Freshman Josh Shapiro led the offense with five hits, driving in two runs and scoring a run. “You gotta do your job when you get a pitch to hit,” said the freshman who said he’s only had a five-hit game in travel ball. “We have a bunch of young guys, but they’re starting to come together,” he added. Anthony Gigante had three hits, Brandon Snow had three, drove in three and scored three runs. Dalton McCarthy had two hits, two RBI and scored two runs. Starting pitcher, Matthew Constantine, settled in after allowing a run in the first inning to throw four shutout innings after that. He scattered s...
by Vinny Messana Molloy kept rolling with their fourth consecutive victory yesterday over Nyack College. They took advantage of five errors from the Warriors and smacked 14 hits on their way to an easy 14-4 win. They are now 18-7 on the season. They fell behind 2-0 in the first inning on an unearned run and an RBI single by Yoni Rodriguez off Seth Norman. They responded with a run in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by Angelo Navetta. Nyack increased their lead to 4-2 in the second inning off Norman–who finished with a line of 2.0 IP, four runs on five hits, two strikeouts while walking none. The Lions offense went to work in the fourth and fifth innings when they put up five each inning. The run scoring: -Nicholas Gonchar 2-R single -Anthony Galanoudis RBI ground out -Anthon...
by Vinny Messana Hofstra‘s bats came to life in their 11-4 victory over St. Peter‘s in Jaroschak Field in N.J. this afternoon. Brad Witkowski hit his second and third home runs of the season. They also got a HR from freshman Vito Friscia, who now has two on the season. David Leiderman and Mat Annunziata also had two hits apiece. They opened up the scoring in the second inning when Kevin O’Connor walked to score Teddy Cillis. Annunziata cleared the bases with a double to make it 4-0. Friscia’s homer in the third increased the lead to 5-1. Annunizata hit an RBI single to score Steven Foster. Witkowski’s two-run blast made it 8-3. Witkowski’s second HR in the sixth inning made it 9-3 and they added two in the eighth on Chris Hardardt‘s two-run ...
by Vinny Messana It doesn’t matter how many people are in attendance–to these two teams, this is as big as it gets. “I call it the Army-Navy game,” said Suffolk’s long-time Head Coach Eric Brown. “This is Duke-North Carolina. They’ve got very good coaching, very good players, so the next time we play the scores might be reversed,” he added. Game One of the four-game set went to the Sharks by the score of 12-2. The weather certainly played a factor as both pitchers struggled with their control as the wind whipped around the field. Brown was pleased with his team’s approach, who forced Nassau starter, Tom DiGiorgi, to walk five batters and hit a batter in the second inning before his catcher Eloy Benson broke the game open with a two-run ...
by Vinny Messana It’s April, which means the Stony Brook Sea Wolves decide not to lose. They stomped over Iona, 15-4, for their third consecutive victory to begin their favorite month of the season. They scored runs in the first five innings–highlighted by a seven-spot in the fifth inning. They received contributions up-and-down the lineup, but the top two hitters led the way. Andruw Gazzola (.356) and Toby Handley (.326), the two leading hitters on the team, both smacked three hits with Gazzola scoring two runs. Dylan Resk drove in two runs and scored three. Casey Baker had two hits, drove in one and scored two runs. David Real and Jeremy Giles both had two hits and drove in two runs. They took advantage of seven (!) errors by Iona. Freshman Bret Clarke was award...
by Vinny Messana After three straight spotty starts to begin the season, it appears Dan Jagiello is back on track. He dominated the high-octane Spartans lineup yesterday in LIU Post’s 10-3 victory in Game One of a DH. The offense smacked 10 hits and was led by freshman Jimmy Mendyk’s two hits and 3 RBI. Rob Andreoli added two hits and a solo HR, Thomas Asbaty had two hits and scored two runs, Kenny Daley and Lou Doria both had two RBI and drove in two runs. The Pioneers made Jagiello’s job much easier when they put up a four-spot in the first inning against starter Anthony Morris. His line was 3.2 IP, nine ER on a eight hits, five walks and three Ks. They also defeated him on April 2 last year at their field. The Spartans entered the game with an offense that had smacked ...
by Vinny Messana Before the game, Pat McCabe told his team this was going to be a ‘statement game’ against Hills West–a perennial playoff team coming off a 15-win season. “We’re shocking the county this year,” the senior said after leading his team to a 10-6 victory. “I don’t want to look like one of those teams who just says it–I want to be a team that acts it. So beating a team like Hills West–that’s a big-time win,” he added. He backed up the talking by recording his second victory of the young season, firing six innings and allowing five ER while striking out six batters. Four of the five runs were scored in the fifth inning after the Bulldogs had taken a commanding lead. The Colts got out to an early 2-0 lead than...

by Vinny Messana This past week our emphasis was on high school ball with the season just getting underway, but I did get the chance to watch Molloy-LIU Post wrap up their four-game set on Monday. There was some changes towards the top in our latest Power Rankings–here’s how they stack up. Molloy Record (17-7, Stock EVEN) They went 3-1 this week, bouncing back from Monday’s defeat at the hands of Brian Kavanagh at LIU. They followed that up with three straight wins. Most impressively, they are getting contributions all over. On Wednesday, Elijah Leerdham smacked the game-winning pinch hit grand slam to defeat Bloomfield 9-5. This week Angelo Navetta struggled a bit after his hot streak but was picked up by Anthony Galanoudis and Deilyn Guzman’s hot hitting. Pitching...
by Vinny Messana Joe Cunningham smacked a two-run single to center field to put Riverhead up 10-7 in the seventh inning to stave off Newfield and win a wild back-and-forth affair. “It would’ve been easy to put their heads in the tank and say ‘this is how it’s gonna be’, but they fought back, they won and now we have to get ready for Smithtown East,” said Head Coach Rob Maccone. Newfield had their young stud, sophomore Kyle Johnson, on the hill looking to complete the three-game sweep. He came out throwing real hard and, aside from a single, had a smooth inning. The Wolverines got on the board first against Cunningham with two runs thanks to an error and an RBI single by Ryan Wappaus. Johnson worked in and out of trouble in the second, allowing two singl...
