For the first time since 1998, Queens College is the ECC Champs! They win it 9-8 in 10 innings on a walk-off pic.twitter.com/6qeecjEjAD — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 13, 2023 2023 was a banner year for Queens College as they broke a 25-year title drought, capturing the ECC Championship in dramatic fashion over the two-time reigning champs, Molloy. The Knights needed to win twice on Championship Saturday and that’s exactly what they did; winning by the scores of 11-7 and 9-8. Over the course of the 5-game tournament, they scored 55 runs. “I’m extremely proud of the guys,” said Head Coach Chris Reardon who is entering his 11th season at the helm and was the recipient of the Axcess Baseball College Coach of the Year Award. “I’ve never been a pa...

It was a remarkable day of baseball for everyone that stuck around for both games – which includes 19 innings of baseballs and more runs than you can count. The level of difficulty for Queens College entering today was incredibly high – as they were not only entering the day fatigued from the previous two days, but they needed to face one of the best pitcher...

OTD: Wantagh Wins Class A NY State Title

Being the No. 7 seed entering the postseason? No problem. Not having a two-time All-State pitcher available in the postseason? No problem. Facing an undefeated Queensbury team in the NYS title game? Psh. The Wantagh Warriors defeated Williamsville East to capture their first Class A NYS title since 1998. Starting pitcher Bobby Hegarty, who fired a one-hitter against Mount Sinai to capture the Long Island Championship went the distance, although he did struggle in the early going putting the Warriors in a 5-1 hole. They clawed back with a three-spot in the fourth inning and tied the ballgame in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Anthony Fontana that scored Jimmy Joyce. The  game was tied going to the ninth inning when Joyce smacked the go-ahead home run to left field that put them three outs a...

OTD: Wantagh Gets to Morrell Early, Repeats As Long Island Champions

THE WANTAGH WARRIORS ARE BACK TO BACK CLASS A LONG ISLAND CHAMPIONS! FINAL: Wantagh 4 Shoreham-Wading River 2 pic.twitter.com/JFdQ2tqOgN — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) June 3, 2017 Much like they have for the past two seasons. Wantagh‘s star players shined when it mattered most. This time it was in the Long Island Championship, defeating the 24-1 Shoreham-Wading River WIldcats 4-2. From the first pitch of this championship contest, the atmosphere could’ve been mistaken for a Wantagh home game. The first pitch of this game was driven for a lead off double over the left fielder’s head courtesy of Anthony D’Onofrio. This was just the beginning. When the first inning was all said and done, Morrell was forced to throw 32 pitches and allowed four earned runs, handing him his worst outing...

OTD: Fontana Deals, Leads Wantagh To Third Consecutive Long Island Championship

THEY HAVE DONE IT AGAIN. Wantagh completes the three-peat as Class A Long Island Champions! FINAL: Wantagh 4 Rocky Point 2 WP – Anthony Fontana (Complete Game) pic.twitter.com/9HcJj90Tin — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) June 2, 2018 Nobody knows how to win championships better than Wantagh. On Sunday, the Wantagh Warriors defeated the Rocky Point Eagles by a score of 4-2 to capture their third consecutive Class A Long Island Championship. The highly anticipated pitching matchup between Joe Grillo and Anthony Fontana was everything that was expected, as both starters produced for their team. However, Fontana got the best of the Rocky Point lineup. He went the distance, allowing no earned runs on four hits. “This is incredible, three years in a row I could cry right now this is o...

OTD: Wantagh Stays Hot and Wins Crucial Series Opener Against Plainedge

Final: Wantagh 4, Plainedge 1 WP: Anthony Fontana S: Mason McLane pic.twitter.com/pyGUi3N7Of — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) April 23, 2018 Anthony Fontana has made a habit of coming up big in his career. Whether it be at the plate in the Long Island Championship against the Paul Gibson Award winning RHP Sam Kessler or last season on the mound in an emergency start against Carl Yastrzemski Award Winning RHP Brian Morrell, the southpaw is always calm and in control on the mound. And he always seems to win. He performed like a seasoned veteran today, pitching out of a couple of jams to lead Wantagh to a 4-1 victory over a dangerous Plainedge team that entered with a record of 9-2-1. We practice every single day and we really work hard for these big games and I think we executed really...

Wantagh Enters 2019 With A Target On Their Back After Winning Three Straight Long Island Championships

The first word that comes to mind when discussing Wantagh is dynasty. As everyone should know, Wantagh has won three consecutive Class A Long Island Championships. They not only demoralized every one of their opponent’s dreams in the making, but now go down in Long Island history as one of the most dominant teams to ever do it. Aside from the 2016 State Championship and the three Long Island Championships, Wantagh portrays an incomparable resume among that three year period. The core of these championship teams were made up of star ballplayers who went on to play baseball at the next level. Winning the most prestigious award in Nassau County is just one of the awards they took home in back-to-back seasons. In 2017, Jimmy Joyce (Hofstra) won the Diamond Award for best hitter, batting ...

Vinny Messana’s Big Board: Top High School Prospects on Long Island

With MLB Draft day just one day away it’s time to discuss which local high school players have a shot to play at the professional level. Many of these players I have watched for the past few seasons and have watched them evolve from talented players with lots of untapped potential to elite players. Additionally, each of these young men happen to possess rare leadership qualities that will help them excel at the next level. Several of these players will play high-end Division-I baseball and a few of them will play professionally after that. Criteria: high school graduates of 2018-2020 and I needed to see them play at least once. Frankin Parra (Copiague 2018, San Jacinto CC-commit) When you watch the video above, it’s easy to see why cross checkers were flying into Long Island to...

Fontana Deals, Leads Wantagh To Third Consecutive Long Island Championship

Nobody knows how to win championships better than Wantagh. “This is incredible, three years in a row I could cry right now this is one of the greatest moments of my life, we work so hard for these moments and I’m really excited to go upstate,” said Fontana. “We’re going to work hard in practice this week, we have to sit through school this week ...

Wantagh Puts Up Nine in the 7th, Captures Third Consecutive County Championship

THREEE PEEEAT!!! Wantagh has done it, they are the back-to-back-to-back Nassau County Class A Champions! FINAL: Wantagh 14 Division 3 pic.twitter.com/RaMeHbraeR — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 28, 2018 Stop me if you’ve heard this before; the Wantagh Warriors are Nassau County Class A Champs. On Memorial Day afternoon, Wantagh proved they were worthy of completing the three-peat as they defeated the Division Blue Dragons by a score of 14-3, highlighted by a nine-run 7th inning. Although the Warriors won their third consecutive championship, this year was much different than the last two. In many ways, this game was over before it started. In 2016 and 2017, Wantagh needed three games to be crowned county champions. This year, they posted a clean sweep over Division, proving...

Wantagh Continues to Roll; On Verge of Claiming Third Straight County Title

Our @DigmiNation Player of the Game is Anthony Fontana who fired a complete game allowing two runs and working out of a couple jams in Wantagh’s 5-2 victory over Division in Game 1 of the Nassau Class A Finals pic.twitter.com/HT0UZH7lsc — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) May 26, 2018 It starts with pitching and defense and for the past 12 games, that has been the recipe for the Wantagh Warriors (22-2). They have not lost since April 26 and remarkably haven’t yielded more than three runs during that period. Their ace, Anthony Fontana, fired another CG in the Warriors’ 5-2 victory over Division (20-5). He is now 9-1 o the season and 22-1 in his varsity career. He was backed by an offense that scored four runs in the first inning of Post-commit Nick Fressle; although it ...

Willix Sends Wantagh to Third Consecutive County Championship

Patrick Willix with the big fly for Wantagh! They did not get off to the start they were hoping for. Garden City starting pitcher Billy Duff was in a groove early getting through three innings while only allowing one hit. Wantagh starting pitcher Patrick Willix did not get off to as smooth of a start. In the first inning, he got into early trouble but escaped stranding runners on first and second. In the second in...
