Insider Notes: April 8

Below are scouting observations from yesterday’s Molloy game. Our reporter, Nick Vecchione, was on the scene providing scouting reports on their top impact players from the afternoon. Angelo Navetta It was a much anticipated wait to finally see Navetta up close and personal, and let me tell you, it was a treat. Listed at 6 feet tall, some say that he is an undersized first basemen, however, he still seems to bring an intimidating presence to the batters box. Navetta sports one of the prettiest left handed swings on the island, and has an inmate ability for pitch recognition. In his earlier at bats he waits patiently for the pitchers to come in his wheel house and those pitches are few and far between.  The muscular first basemen sometimes expands the expands the zone and will offer a...

Fall Ball Series: Molloy

Coach Fucarino speaking about his 2017-’18 team pic.twitter.com/FzIiO7mriL — Axcess Baseball (@axcessbaseball) September 14, 2017 Today I was down at Mitchel Field in Uniondale to get a good look at the team Molloy will be going to battle with during the upcoming 2018 season. After struggling during the early part of the 2017, they caught fire in the latter portion of the season and made a playoff run. They made it to the ECC championship, but ultimately had their season cut off by LIU Post; who were crowned champs. That team graduated 11 seniors, including several of their impact guys; notably workhorse Ron Bauer, LHP Dominic Danetti, SS Brian Murphy, INF Michael Rahn, INF Kevin Podell, OF Anthony Alberghina and OF Anthony Galanoudis. Despite the large group of outgoing seniors...

Angelo Navetta: These Are the Best Pitchers I’ve Faced in the ECC

(Editor’s Note: Angelo Navetta is currently a junior at Molloy College. He is coming off a spectacular 2016 season in which he was the recipient of Baseball on the Island’s Most Valuable Player Award. He is widely regarded as one of the best defensive first baseman and pure hitters in the East Coast Conference. The following words are his own) Frank Moscatiello (St. Thomas Aquinas) Frank is a high velocity, high effort kinda guy. This makes him tough to hit because you know he is not going to take a pitch off. You want to make him work and foul pitches off but when he pounds the zone with his fastball he is very tough to hit. His high velocity fastball is supported by his tight slider, which has great late movement. For me, that’s what makes him difficult because the slid...

Molloy Poised For Another Big Year

by Mike Guido 2016 Record: 31-23 (East Regional Appearance) Key Additions: Dominic Danetti (LHP), Luciano Morrello (RHP), Sean Hogan (C), James Messina (RHP), Anthony Vano (RHP), Matt Imbrogno (INF), Patrick Kennedy (RHP), Jake Saltzman (OF), Justyn Crisostomo (3B) Key Losses: Nick Gonchar (RF), Deilyn Guzman (RHP) After putting up a program-record 31-wins and earning the No. 6 overall seed in the East Region bracket of the NCAA Tournament last season, a heavily battle-tested Molloy team looks to do much of the same in 2017–if not better. With an overwhelming majority of last season’s roster returning including a loaded freshman class, success for this program looks imminent. Molloy has eight out of their starting nine returning in 2017 including ECC Player of the Year and Baseball o...

Which Players From Long Island Could Get Drafted This Year? Part 1

This is a year where there is a higher-than-normal amount of players with professional caliber playing on Long Island. There might not be a first-round pick, but there will be plenty of Day 3 guys. To discuss them all, it will be broken into a multi-part series. Here is the first group. Jesse Berardi (Commack ’14, St. John’s ’18) You won’t find anyone that says a bad word about Berardi. He won the Carl Yastrzemski Award in 2014 and was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies. His makeup is off the charts and everyone adores how he respects the game and hustles at all times. He was regarded as the best defensive shortstop to come out of Long Island since Shawon Dunston. His bat has come along and all of a sudden he developed power which only enhances his value. Assuming...

Dan Parisi Voted MVP of March

Photo Credit: Dowling Athletics The fans have spoken! After 748 votes, Dan Parisi, Dowling’s senior catcher, triumphed over a field of five other candidates to be named MVP of March. The players were Jack Parenty (Stony Brook), Angelo Navetta (Molloy), Anthony Bonilla (St. Joseph’s), Mike Marino (Farmingdale) and Steven Foster (Hofstra). After one day, Parisi had garnered 68% of the vote and appeared to be sailing to the finish line, but overnight the St. Joseph’s crowd went to work. Bonilla not only closed the gap but took a nine-vote lead at 161-152. The Dowling crowd must’ve took it to heart because Parisi came back with a vengeance. He didn’t just close the gap, he didn’t just take the lead but he took a commanding 190-vote lead within two hours. He ...

Connor McCarthy Throws Two-Hitter in 3-0 Shutout of Molloy

As mentioned earlier, great pitching duels are a staple of the LIU Post-Molloy rivalry. In the first game of the double header it was Alex Brosnan who was dominant. In the second game, LIU Post’s Connor McCarthy threw a seven inning shutout in a 3-0 victory.McCarthy, a graduate student from Clarke HS, allowed only two singles while striking out four and allowing only walk against Molloy.Tom Asbaty reached on a throwing error by the 3b to score Kenny Daley and get the Pioneers on the board in the second inning. They increased the lead to 2-0 when David Groeneveld hit an RBI single to score Asbaty. That was all the support needed for McCarthy. For good measure, the Pioneers added a run in the fourth inning when Anthony Brunetti singled home Rick Alessi. The Pioneers won the three-game se...
