6’6″ Greg Marino is coming off a great year and is up to 88-90 MPH with his heater. Certainly a potential draft candidate pic.twitter.com/d5UKWGTEoS — Axcess Baseball (@axcessbaseball) October 16, 2017 This afternoon I was at Stony Brook University to watch their Scout Day, which was attended by at least 20 MLB scouts from across the region. Stony Brook is one of the few teams in the region that consistently have their players selected in the MLB Draft. This year should be no different, as they have a handful of players that are draft-eligible. Additionally, they have younger players that could garner interest in the coming years. Below is my observations from the workout. Dylan Resk (JR) is a 6’1″ power-hitting outfielder that smacked 13 HR last year and drove...
by Mike Guido Key Additions: Mike Wilson (INF), Kris Killackey (RHP), Nick Montefusco (RHP), Brian Herrmann (RHP), Garrett Heaton (INF), Nick Grande (INF), Chris Hamilton (OF), Chris Keenan (RHP), Brandon Bonanno (RHP), Jake Alba (RHP), Mike Amandola (C), Steven Acosta (RHP) Key Losses: Chad Lee, Jack Parenty, Johnny Caputo, Tyler Honahan The Stony Brook Seawolves are no strangers to success. They have a knack for always putting a good product on the field–especially since 2012 when they made their iconic run to the College World Series. After finishing 27-27 in 2016, they are looking to do improve on that mark. A rotation led by Bret Clarke, who boasted a 6-2 record with a 2.19 ERA overall and a 3-1 record and a 1.32 ERA in conference games, will need to rely on the youth of the rec...
Photo Credit: Vinny Messana Casey Baker smacked an RBI single to drive in Jack Parenty–who reached on an error, advanced on a wild pitch and stole third–to give Stony Brook a 4-3 lead that they would hold on to. With the victory over UMBC, the Sea Wolves advance to the championship game of the America East tournament.Tyler Honahan got the start for the Sea Wolves and, after a quick first inning, he ran into trouble in the second. He allowed a walk, single, RBI single and two-run double to fall behind 3-0.The offense backed him in the next half inning. Andruw Gazzola started it off with a single, Jeremy Giles walked and Bobby Honeyman reached on an error while laying down a sac bunt. After a strikeout, Cole Peragine drove two in with a single. Toby Handley hit a sac fly to tie it...

After stealing second and advancing on a wild pitch, Chavarria drove him in with a single to extend the lead to 2-0. That was all Zamora needed, he cruised through eight innings. Peragine, Baker and Andruw Gazzola all smacked three hits and Chavarria scored three runs. The offense compiled 15 hits in total and also drew...
Photo Credit: Vinny Messana Stony Brook swept a DH by the scores of 5-3 and 9-3 and have lowered their magic number to clinch the America East to 2. They lead UMBC by 3.5 games in the standings so any combination of Sea Wolve victories or UMBC losses that add to two will result in Stony Brook getting the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament. There are four more regular season games to go. In the first game of the DH, Stony Brook was behind 3-2 after three innings, but tied it up in the fourth when Andruw Gazzolla started the inning off with a triple and he scored on Bobby Honeyman‘s sac fly. In the sixth, they took the lead when Casey Baker hit a one-out triple and he came in to score on a fielder’s choice. That was all the Sea Wolves’ pitching staff would need. Starte...
What makes Stony Brook a dangerous team is they can play to any team’s strength. On Tuesday they were in a slugfest and scored 18 runs on 18 hits against NYIT.They held a 5-0 lead in the top of the third with Aaron Pinto on the mound, but he struggled mightily in the third inning. NYIT took a 7-5 lead with the big knock coming on a three-run home run by Louis Mele (3-for-6 four RBI), who now has nine homers and 40 RBI for the Bears. The Sea Wolves responded with three in the top of the fourth on a two-run RBI ground out and a wild pitch. They tacked on one more in the fifth, two in the sixth, four in the seventh and three in the ninth.Jack Parenty, Casey Baker, Andruw Gazzola and Jeremy Giles all compiled three hits while Malcolm Nachmanoff drove in three runs. The Sea Wolves scored three in the first, three again in the third and two in the eighth and compiled 18 hits as a team. Honeyman scored three runs to go along with his five hits. Toby Handley also had four hits, drove in two and scored twice. Robert Chavarria, Casey Baker and Andruw Gazzolla each had two hits. Baker drove in three, Gazzolla brought in a pair. Ryley MacEachern, normally a reliever, started and pitched 3.1 innings. He struggled with his command, walking five batters, and was replaced with Chad Lee. Written by Jim Ferchland A remarkable milestone was reached on Wednesday as Stony Brook Head Coach Matt Senk earned his 700thcareer win against a hungry LIU-Brooklyn team by the score of 6-4. This is Senk’s 25thseason as head coach of the Stony Brook Seawolves. The 6-4 victory also extended the Seawolves winning streak to seven and improve their overall record (17-11). Their last loss took place in the second game of a double-header at home to UMass Lowell on March 30. The LIU-Brooklyn Blackbirds extended their losing streak to three. Within those three defeats, they have let up 20 runs and have only scored seven. On road games, they are 6-13. Their overall record now stands at 11-20 under new head coach Alex Trezza. Freshman pitcher Nicolas DiEva got the s...
[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yt5aCzo7zqA]The Stony Brook Sea Wolves took advantage of some porous defense by Manhattan to roll to a 10-3 victory and improve their record to 13-11.The offense wasted no time in taking a 2-0 lead in the first inning when an error by the second baseman brought home Toby Handley, and Johnny Caputo followed with a laser beam of a double to get out to a 2-0 lead. They opened it up with a three-spot in the second inning. Jeremy Giles started it off with a single and Andruw Gazzolla was hit by a pitch to advance him to second. After two ground outs, Handley reached on another error by the second baseman to score Giles and Jack Parenty followed with a long triple over the CF head. That was all the offense they needed. Starter Nick DiEva went three shutout ...
Written by Jim Ferchland Photo Credit: Jim Ferchland The Stony Brook Seawolves have struggled 18 games into the season–as they sit at 8-10. However, the Sacred Heart Pioneers have an abundance of work to do as they sit at the bottom of the standings at 1-14. Stony Brook and the cold rain were not doing the Pioneers any favors as Stony Brook took down Sacred Heart 8-4 in 6 ½ innings. The game was shortened due to inclement weather. Stony Brook’s junior right-handed pitcher Tim Knesik made his fifth start on the mound today. He struggled through 1.1 innings and was relieved by Nick DiEva, who received the win with 2.2 shutout innings of relief. Sacred Heart’s six-foot nine-inch junior pitcher Connor Landers only pitched one inning and it was a sure nightmare. He was lit up by the Sea...
[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KnN_7K-7FjM] The Sea Wolves were looking to sweep the Binghamton Bearcats on Monday. Instead the Bearcats came out swinging and put the game away in the third inning with a 10-spot.Stony Brook starter Tim Knesnik did not have hit best stuff. He last 2.2 innings and was tagged for six hits and eight runs (five ER). Calhoun graduate Jake Thomas led the offense for the Bearcats–he compiled a 3-for-3 afternoon with three runs scored and two RBI. His two-run triple was the icing on the cake in the third inning. It was an overall lousy day for the Sea Wolves who committed three errors and compiled only seven hits. Freshman Andruw Gazzola was the lone player with two hits. The bright spot was freshman Matt Buckshaw, who fired two shutout innings in hi...
