More than one player referred to Opening Day as a holiday during pregame warmups. Adelphi’s starting pitcher, TJ Santiago, had the energy of a kid on Christmas morning but his splitter acted more like the Grinch. The senior RHP was lights out (7 IP, 9 K, 0 R, 2 H, 2 BB) in Adelphi’s 5-2 win over perennial powerhouse St. Thomas Aquinas. After upsetting the No. 1 seed Pace, Adelphi was defeated on Thursday and faced elimination on Friday. They staved off elimination with a 7-2 victory against New Haven in which John Thompson threw 6.1 strong innings to record his second win of the season. John Fogarty had three hits and Rob Vani drove in two runs. They advanced to face Stonehill for the second time in as many days and it did not go well. We covered the win on Friday night, in which Cody McParland threw seven innings and the offense racked up 17 hits. They won the second game by the score of 10-5 on Saturday. Brendan Butler improved to 5-1, but it was not his most dominating effort of the season. They won the first game 2-1 on a walk-off two-run single by Robert Chavarria which scored Cole Peragine and pinch runner Billy McLean.Daniel Zamora threw a seven inning complete game. He allowed only one run, struck out nine, walked two and allowed four hits. It was his third win of the season. The offense was stagnant for six innings, but they came through when it mattered most. Division-I:Hofstra was defeated by Villanova 3-1. The offense only mustered six hits against opposing starter Josh Harris, despite drawing four walks and striking out only once. The Pride’s starter, Chris Bonk, threw eight innings, allowing three runs on 11 hits while striking out three.Villanova got on the board in the first inning on an RBI single. The Golden Lions wasted no time putting up a three spot in the first. Dan Parisi singled home Jon Cruz, executed a double steal which scored RJ Going and then came around on a wild pitch by Michael Tarpey (4 IP, 6 R, 4 ER, 1 K).
