On Tuesday, I hosted a mock draft using players that played Long Island high school baseball between 2010-2020. It was a fun project and I solicited the help of three trusted baseball people that have watched Long Island baseball for the entire decade Tom Downey – Area Scout, Philadelphia Phillies/ Blue Chip Prospects Jon Mauchan – Area Scout, Minnesota Twins/Northeast Regional Sales, Rawlings Alex Brosnan – Pitching Coach, Molloy College Team Messana Manager: Steve DeCaro Assistant Coach: Mike Ninivaggi Bench Coach: Ryan McSherry Breaking It Down: I may be a little bias here but this is clearly the best team. It’s very simple: Whether you want to argue that ‘pitching wins championships’, ‘you need to score to win games’ or ‘defense is...
Photo Credit: Molloy Lions The Molloy Lions took three of four from the struggling Queens College this weekend to improve to 19-16 on the season. After winning the first game 11-1 on Friday night, which we recapped, they won Game 1 of Saturday’s DH 4-3. They were down 3-0 in the bottom of the seventh inning, but came to life in the bottom of the seventh.Kyle Van Duyne hit a sacrifice fly to score John Galanoudis and get the Lions on the board. In the eighth inning, they cut the lead to 3-2 on an error by the second baseman to score Anthony Alberghina. Photo Credit: Vinny Messana Dowling might have a good pitching staff, but they have an even better social media presence. For the second time in a week, they have gotten their player voted No. 1 in Baseball on the Island’s March Awards. It is not to say that Cody McPartland is not deserving–his numbers certainly jump off the page. After yesterday’s seven inning outing against Queens, he is now 2-0, having thrown 27 innings, allowed only 6 ER (2.00 ERA), 20 hits, walked eight, allowed only one XBH and held the opposition to a .208 AVG. He has done a commendable job filling in for Tyler Badamo as the ace of the Golden Lions through one month of the season. “While losing the three starters we had last year are tough to replace, myself and a few others have stepped up t...
As mentioned earlier, great pitching duels are a staple of the LIU Post-Molloy rivalry. In the first game of the double header it was Alex Brosnan who was dominant. In the second game, LIU Post’s Connor McCarthy threw a seven inning shutout in a 3-0 victory.McCarthy, a graduate student from Clarke HS, allowed only two singles while striking out four and allowing only walk against Molloy.Tom Asbaty reached on a throwing error by the 3b to score Kenny Daley and get the Pioneers on the board in the second inning. They increased the lead to 2-0 when David Groeneveld hit an RBI single to score Asbaty. That was all the support needed for McCarthy. For good measure, the Pioneers added a run in the fourth inning when Anthony Brunetti singled home Rick Alessi. The Pioneers won the three-game se...
Photo Credit: Molloy Athletics Each day it seems a pitcher takes his game to the next level in this match up between inter-county rivals. Today it was Alex Brosnan of Molloy.“My changeup was easily my best pitch today,” said Brosnan. “Their 3-4 hitters were lefties so we worked off the changeup,” he added.Molloy evened up the three-game set with the LIU Post Pioneers with a 4-2 victory in the first game of a twin bill on Sunday. Brosnan fired a complete game with 10 k’s, allowed five hits, one walk and two ER against the Pioneers. The Lions put up two runs in the first inning on Angelo Navetta‘s RBI single to right field and Michael’s Rahn‘s sac fly. They added one in the third inning when Rahn struck again, this time on an RBI double to score...
