Throw out everything you thought you knew about northeast baseball in February. This one couldn’t have been any more opposite. In a game featuring two Division-II programs known for their pitching in a conference dominated by pitching in a climate conducive to low-scoring games, this one bucked the trend and it turned into a football score in which the Franklin Pierce Ravens edged the Adelphi Panthers, 20-17. It was Opening Day for the Panthers, coming off one of their best seasons in program history so there was a great turnout despite the weather. Nic Luc got the ball for Adelphi, but the Ravens did not wait long to get on the board. Jonel Ozuna clubbed a two-out, two-run shot to right field to take an early 2-0 lead. That was not the last time we heard from him this afternoon and ...
Like we did a couple weeks ago with high school, it’s time to debate the top college teams of the 2010s. The rules are as follows: Each program can appear on this list only one time. This is to avoid having the list stocked with Division-I schools. The schools that are in consideration are Stony Brook, Hofstra, NY Tech, Adelphi, Molloy, LIU Post, Queens, Dowling, Farmingdale State, Old Westbury, St. Joseph’s, Maritime, Suffolk CC and Nassau CC. Without further ado, here it goes. 10. Suffolk CC 2018 (Record: 30-13) This team had a terrific combination of pitching and defense. Leading the charge offensively was Jeff Towle. A catcher with true power potential at the plate, he hit three HRs in one game in early March. He finished the season with a triple slash line of .463/.543/.86...
Carle Place, NY– In what was a packed house at the beautiful Chateau Briand, New York Yankees GM Brian Cashman spoke candidly with Ed Randall, host of the popular radio show, “Talking Baseball”. There was over 400 guests in attendance and they were treated to an informative discussion between a veteran talk show host and the current GM of the most successful franchise in the history of North American sports. Cashman, a native of Rockville Center, came on at about 9:15pm which was directly after the news broke about the Yankees releasing Jacoby Ellsbury and designating Greg Bird for assignment. Here’s a few highlights from the discussion. Again, this wasn’t a motivational speech, this was a pretty in-depth conversation on a myriad of issues both past & pres...
Jacob Pedersen (Comsewogue 2021) with 14 strikeouts in a complete game victory in @liboysofsummer quarterfinals. Fastball up to 86 MPH pic.twitter.com/eHMroXsd9n — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) August 7, 2019 Jacob Pederson announced his verbal commitment to Adelphi University this past week. Jacob is a 2021 graduate of Comsewogue HS, he put himself on the map this season with a 14 strikeout complete game victory during the Boys of Summer playoffs in which he touched 86 MPH. I had a chance to speak with him and here’s what he had to say.. Can you explain your experience with the college recruiting process and why you chose Adelphi? My experience with the college recruiting process was quick and painless. I joined the LI Strong Baseball Academy this fall. During that time, I ha...
Freshman southpaw Michael Storms (Smithtown East) has thrown well this fall pic.twitter.com/ZsCyyRIk9z — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) October 22, 2019 It’s hard to imagine a team having a better regular season than Adelphi did in 2019– they finished with a record of 34-6-1, they peaked as the No. 5 ranked Division-II team in the nation, they went on an 18-game unbeaten streak, they had an All-American pitcher and an MLB draft pick (Ed Baram). Somehow, there’s still a sense of unfinished business in Garden City as the Panthers had their season cut short in disappointing fashion with consecutive home playoff losses to Southern Connecticut, Franklin Pierce and Wilmington University. A team with a 3.44 ERA allowed 27 runs in those three postseason games and watched Ne...
May is always chaos for Long Island baseball. With the combination of Division-III conference championships intersecting with Division-II postseason this week, which turns into Division-II Regionals intersecting with Division-I postseason and high school postseason next week which turns into the Long Island Championships for Class AA, A, B and C. Needless to say it’s a crazy time for us, but you have to love it. As opposed to the Power Rankings, we are going to do something different. That’s because this deep into the season, it’s pretty much clear how the teams stack up. Here’s what you can follow along with this week. *Note: The ECC playoff seeds will be set following today’s Queens @ LIU Post games. Monday: Queens @ LIU Post 3pm (ECC Regular Season Finale) ...
