April 6 Recap

Several teams were in action on Friday. The teams went 5-3 on the afternoon. Take a look at who stood out: Division-I Hofstra: Hofstra defeated Delaware 9-0 behind ace John Rooney. The LHP continued his impressive season, putting together a complete game, two-hit shutout. He notched 11 strikeouts making it the third time this season he’s put up double digit strikeouts in a game. The bats did plenty of work as right fielder Teddy Cillis went 4-for-4 with two doubles and one RBI while Matt Siedem had three hits and smacked his first career HR. The Pride banged out 17 hits on the afternoon, good enough to put them at 13-9 on the season. Fordham: Fordham was defeated by Rhode Island, 6-2. Rhode Island struck first in the seventh inning on a Brett McManus three-run double down the line. They pi...

Which Prospect Has Risen Their Stock the Most So Far?

We can talk until we are blue in the face in the offseason about what to expect in the upcoming season based on the stats compiled from the previous year. At the end of the day, it comes down to performance on the field and Rob Andreoli (LIU Post 2018) To say he’s risen his performance wouldn’t be accurate, but following his Axcess Baseball MVP season, he’s certainly proven that it wasn’t a fluke of a season, which raises his draft stock. He’s leading the team in hitting once again at .352 and he has drawn more walks (11) than strikeouts (9) again. An OBP of .421 is typical for him, and he’s also added 10 stolen bases to go along with his usual solid defense in CF. Also, he’s proven that whatever injury hampered him at the end of last season is beh...

Eighth Inning Rally Propels No. 22 Ranked Le Moyne Past Adelphi

Josiah Gray on his outing and @LeMoyneBaseball 6-4 victory over Adelphi pic.twitter.com/chW8a5sMr4 — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) March 30, 2018 The 22nd-ranked Le Moyne Dolphins outlasted the Adelphi Panthers, 6-4, on Friday at William J. Bonomo Memorial Field in an entertaining match that featured two starting pitchers that are potential MLB Draft picks with at least 20 MLB scouts in attendance. “It’s always a good win when you come from behind against a team like that,” said Le Moyne head coach Scott Cassidy. A couple of pitching prospects started this game with Panthers junior Ed Baram and Le Moyne junior Josiah Gray. The two were roommates last summer while playing for the Hamptons League. Baram touched 91 mph while Gray sat in t...

Six-Run Seventh Inning Gives Adelphi 10-6 Victory

Final: Adelphi 10, LIU Post 6 WP: Danny Taggart Brandon Morse: 2-for-4, 2 RBI, 2 R pic.twitter.com/6mSsOvgmfF — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) March 19, 2018 Despite being a non-conference game, this was a weekday game nobody wanted to lose. You could see the energy level was different and there was some chirping that’s typically reserved for the rivalry games. Adelphi channeled their motivation into a 10-6 victory over LIU Post in a battle between Nassau County Div-II programs. Early on, Adelphi was in charge as they took a 4-0 lead against LHP Noah Lorenzo, who entered the day with a 2.67 ERA and has been as steady as they come. After a 1-2-3 first inning, he ran into trouble when the Panthers smacked back-to-back doubles, the latter of which was Thomas Colombo who drove...

Thomas Colombo’s Walk-Off Single Propels Adelphi On Opening Day

WALK OFF: Adelphi wins it in 10 by the score of 4-3 ! pic.twitter.com/jG0DJN5k80 — Axcess Baseball LI (@axcessbaseball) March 3, 2018 Thomas Colombo took note of the previous few batters and noticed how Derek Duffy, Franklin Pierce‘s pitcher, worked aggressively early in the count. “I noticed that he was attacking with first-pitch fastballs, so I was looking for that. I just wanted to pick up Brett,” said Colombo moments after lining a single in front of Brad Roberto, who made a strong throw to catcher Stephen Octave but Jonathan Iadevaia was called safe on a bang-bang play. The single, Colombo’s first of the season after starting the day off 0-for-4, delivered the Panthers to a 4-3 victory in an exciting game at William J. Bonomo Field. Starting pitcher Ed Bar...

Axcess Baseball Weekly Featuring Ed Baram

This is the first episode of our weekly YouTube series titled Axcess Baseball Weekly. Our first guest is Adelphi University’s ace Ed Baram. He is one of the top pitcher’s in the region. He compiled an ERA of 2.70 ERA over 60.0 IP with a record of 4-4. With the graduation of Axcess Baseball Cy Young T.J. Santiago, he will be counted on to anchor what appear to be one of the top pitching staffs in the Northeast-10 conference. The pitching staff will count on other upperclassmen such as Daniel Taggart and Mike Demarest, but they have a strong crop of young flame throwers such as Nic Luc, Austin Cole, Josh Rovner, Max Steele, among others. He also spoke about their offense led by Steve Withers and Brett Malm. Each week we will be joined by a guest from the baseball comment.

Which Local College Players Could Be Drafted in 2018?

There is a ton of talent at our local colleges and universities. Far too little attention is given to the college players, my guess is because people constantly want to know who is the next child prodigy and that involves being not just exceptionally talented but exceptionally young. For purposes of this article, we will focus on the college players that are draft-eligible in 2018 only. There’s two categories; players that should get drafted unless they have a poor season and players that could get drafted but only if they have an exceptional season. Category 1: Reiss Knehr, RHP Fordham Knehr is a 2015 graduate of St. Dominic HS–that’s right he and Kyle Young were on the same stuff. That was prior to Kyle Young’s breakthrough season, and Knehr was the ace of that st...

What Are the Major Story Lines to Watch for in 2018? (College)

Yesterday we went over the top story lines for the 2018 high school season, you can read that here. Now we will shift over to the colleges in our coverage area. How good can Adelphi’s pitching staff be? It might not happen this year, but this group of young pitchers has the potential to blossom into something special. The year prior to me getting to Adelphi, they compiled a team ERA of 1.97–good for second in the nation. They came within one inning of qualifying for the College World Series. That pitching staff had four players–Robert Nixon, Jonathon Gonzalez, Mike Scudero and Dillon McNamara that wound up playing professional baseball. McNamara is now with the San Francisco Giants. After watching their Scout Day back in October, I came away very impressed. Their group of...

Veterans Day: Brandon Stahl On Deciding to Join the Army After Baseball

(Editor’s Note: Brandon Stahl is a 2010 graduate of St. Dominic HS, where he was an Under Armour All-American and three-time All-League selection. He attended Div-I Old Dominion in Virginia before transferring to Adelphi, where he enjoyed a breakout season in 2013 with a .309 AVG and .356 OBP. The following words are his own.) By Brandon Stahl Deciding to join the military was definitely one of the harder decisions I have ever had to make in my life to this point. Many people talk of a “calling” when it comes to this line of work and one day that calling hit me and I never looked back. In my personal opinion, serving and defending this country is one of the most honorable endeavors a person can immerse themselves in and my passion for this has stuck with me since I was a young kid. S...

Dom Gatti: At the Forefront of Instructors Teaching New-Age Techniques

Dom Gatti pulls out an iPad and opens up a video editing program that has the swing of every prominent Major League baseball player. “Let’s look at (Jose) Altuve,” he said to me. He opens up two videos; one from his rookie season in 2011 and another from 2017. He begins drawing lines with his finger pointing out the subtle differences in the length between his feet in his batting stance, his leg kick, the angle his back leg forms at the point of contact and where Altuve’s bat is in regards to the “hitting window”. The words flow with confidence, as if Gatti has been preaching this his entire life. Gatti represents a new flock of hitting gurus that subscribe to the new theory of creating launch angle that is conducive to higher OPS and average distance. W...
