What a wonderful sight to see college baseball occurring all over our region. Several teams were in action today, and it was overall a very productive day for the locals. Still, we are not at full speed as Hofstra, St. John’s, Maritime and Nassau all had their games postponed due to COVID concerns. Here’s to hoping we will get a full slate of games at some point this year. Here’s how the action went down: Division-I: Stony Brook is back to .500 at 7-7 after sweeping Albany in a DH by the scores of 9-3 and 14-6. In Game 1, Sam Turcotte got the start and he was outstanding. He went six innings, striking out 10, allowing just 1 ER on five hits. The Seawolves broke a scoreless tie in the third on a sac fly by John Tuccillo to score Derek Yalon. They extended the lead to 2-0 i...
Yesterday was the warmest day of the year, with some parts of New York touching 80 degrees. It was a summer day with not a cloud in the sky and yet there was only three local teams in action. Here’s how it went down: Division-I: Stony Brook beat Albany in an absolute thriller, 14-11, in Albany in a game that took three hours, 30 minutes. Shane Paradine notched the go-ahead two-run double in the 9th inning to give the Seawolves a 13-11 lead, which they would hold on to. They actually led by 5 runs at two separate times. They led 6-1 in the fifth and 9-4 in the sixth following a solo shot by John Tuccillo. The problem was that the Great Danes offense was just getting going. They put up three runs in the seventh and four runs in the eighth with the game-tying run coming on a sac fly by ...
Saturday was certainly the busiest day of the baseball season thus far. And we couldn’t have asked for a better day either, as the temperature sat right around 50 degrees for most of the afternoon and not a cloud in the sky. Here’s how it went down: Division-I Fordham and St. John’s played a DH at Jack Kaiser Stadium in Queens. They played 13 innings in the first game and 7 innings in game two. For the marathon game, the score was tied 6-6 in the seventh inning on a bases loaded HBP of Justin Folz to score Marty Higgins. Credit to both teams pitching staffs for keeping the game scoreless until the 13th inning. Joseph Quintal threw six shutout innings of relief for the Rams which allowed them to walk it off on an RBI fielder’s choice by C.J. Vazquez. He had four RBI ...
Yesterday was a record-breaking way for one local program – who couldn’t stop scoring runs. Another team set a record for a marathon day while another had their game cancelled due to COVID protocols. Welcome to life in 2021. Here’s how the action went down: Division-I Hofstra split a double header with Sacred Heart, but we are going to focus on Game 2 because it was the record-breaking performance. They posted a remarkable 27 runs in that one. They scored in every inning, here’s their breakdown of runs in each inning 1 1 6 5 7 4 2 1 X They amassed 24 hits and drew 12 walks. Here’s their top performers Ryan Morash: 4-for-6, 4 runs, 2 RBI Anthony D’Onofrio: 3-for-5, 3 runs, 5 RBI Austin Gauthier: 3-for-4, 3 runs, 2 RBI Nick Marrero: 3-for-3, 4 runs, 4 RBI,...
Saturday was a brutally cold day, but there was no stopping baseball from being played in our northeast region. A few local teams were in action, and it was an overall successful day once again. Here’s how it went down… Fordham opened up their 2021 season with a victory over NJIT. I was planning to attend but the trip was littered with traffic and was going to take over 2 hours so I would’ve arrived late. Combine that with the brutal temperature, and I’m not complaining about not going. Matt Mikulski started for the Rams, went four innings, struck out eight and was awarded the victory. He allowed two ER on four hits. Alex Henderson pitched 1.2 innings in relief, allowing one ER. Jack Popolizio earned the hard, 10-out save, striking out three batters along the way. T...
Yesterday was the first taste of a day filled with college baseball action in close to one year. Three local Division-I programs were in action. We covered Stony Brook’s season-opening DH sweep over Sacred Heart, which you can read about here. Here’s the other two schools as well. Division-I: St. John’s defeated UMASS-Lowell by the score of 2-1 in a swift 2 hours, 18 minutes. Nick Mondak got the start for the Red Storm and was effective, going six shutout innings with seven strikeouts, allowing just two hits and a walk. His offense did not give him much to work with against UMASS-Lowell starter Collin Duffley. The offenses traded zeros for the first three innings, but the Johnnies got on the board in the home half of the fourth inning on an RBI ground out off the bat of M...
